그렇다면 왜 제가 테니스 공을 그토록 반대할까요? 첫째, 테니스 공은 크기가 다양한데 잘못된 크기를 고르면 개에게 질식 위험이 있기 때문입니다. 실제로 공이 목에 걸려서 개가 숨을 쉴 수 없게 된다면 정말 무서운 상황이죠. 그러니 그런 일은 어떤 공으로든 일어날 수 있습니다. 제가 일상적으로 사용하는 일반 테니스 공을 사용하지 말라고 강력히 권하는 큰 이유 중 하나는 많은 경우 개에게 유독한 재료로 만들어지기 때문입니다. 믿기 어렵겠지만, 북미에는 개 장난감의 유독성 수준에 대한 지침이 전혀 없습니다. 물론 콩(Kong)과 같이 개 전용으로 만들어진 안전한 테니스 공 브랜드도 있습니다. 콩의 관계자들은 삑삑 소리가 나는 테니스 공을 만드는데, 겉면의 펠트 재질이 일반 테니스 공의 펠트와는 다른 것으로 알고 있습니다. 앞서 언급했듯이 그곳은 개 장난감을 매우 진지하게 다루기 때문에 펠트 재질도 확실히 무독성입니다. 그들은 모든 제품이 무독성 재료로 만들어지도록 철저히 관리합니다. 믿기 어려우시겠지만, 제가 테니스 공을 가장 크게 문제 삼는 이유는 개의 치아를 매우 마모시키기 때문입니다. 부분적으로는 펠트 재질 탓도 있지만, 공이 바닥에 굴러다니면서 작은 흙먼지나 자갈이 묻기 때문이기도 합니다. 샌들 아래에 작은 모래 알갱이가 들어갔을 때의 그 짜증스러움을 겪어보셨죠? 개가 공을 씹을 때도 똑같은 일이 벌어집니다. 결국 치아가 마모되는 것이죠.
So, why am I so anti-tennis ball? Number one, there's various sizes and you choose the wrong size and it could choke a dog. And that's a very scary situation when the ball actually gets lodged in the dog's throat and they can't breathe. So, that could happen with any kind of ball. One of the big reasons I strongly encourage you to not use your regular everyday tennis ball is because a lot of times they're made with materials that are toxic to dogs. So, believe it or not, here in North America, there are absolutely zero guidelines to toxicity levels of anything in dog toys. There are brands of tennis balls made just for dogs that are safe. For example, Kong. The people at Kong make a squeaky tennis ball and apparently the felt is different than the felt of most tennis balls. And the felt is definitely non-toxic because as I mentioned before, they take their dog toys very, very seriously over there and they make sure that they're all non-toxic material. Now, believe it or not, one of the biggest problems with tennis balls for me is they are super abrasive to the dog's teeth. Partly it's the felt, but partly is they're on the ground. They're picking up little bits of dirt and pebbles. And if you've ever had a little piece of dirt under your sandal, you know how annoying that is. Well, the dog's chewing it and guess what? It wears down their teeth.
