훈련에 실패하고 반려견이 기대했던 언어적 신호에 반응하지 않을 때는, 항상 그만한 이유가 있습니다. 신호를 너무 일찍 추가하면 반려견이 행동을 온전히 자기 것으로 만들지 못해서, 그 신호가 유지되지 않을 가능성이 높습니다. 훈련이 실패할 수 있는 두 번째 이유는 선행 조건 설정이 성공을 유도하지 못했기 때문입니다. 즉, 약간의 좌절감을 유발하거나 반려견에게 너무 많은 다른 선택지가 있었던 경우죠. 예를 들어, 토끼 농장에서 반려견에게 리콜(부름에 응하기)을 가르치려 할 때, 반려견이 우리를 사랑한다고 생각해서 첫 번째로 신호를 추가하면, 반려견은 토끼를 보고 다른 방향으로 달려가 버릴 겁니다. 따라서 우리는 성공을 보장할 수 없는 환경에서 훈련해서는 안 됩니다. 물론 언젠가는 그 토끼 농장에 가서 우리가 불렀을 때 반려견이 뒤돌아 오게 만들 수 있지만, 처음부터 그렇게 되지는 않습니다.
When training fails and your dog doesn't do the response that your verbal cue was hoped to prompt, there's always a reason for it. So, if a cue is added too early, the behavior was not owned by the dog, chances are that cue is not going to hold up. Number two reason why it might fail is the antecedent arrangement was not prompting success. That it created a little bit of frustration that there were too many other options for the dog. Like we're trying to teach our dog a recall at the bunny farm. The first time we add a cue because we think the dog loves us, they're going to see bunnies and run off in other directions. So, we don't want to be training in environments that aren't going to create success. Yes, eventually we can go to that bunny farm and our dogs will turn and come when we ask, but it doesn't start out that way.
