Um, what are your priorities for your dog in order for them to live their best life with you? So it's going to be unique to each and everybody because of the, the, the life you live, you know, what's important. Are you somebody who travels all over the place? And in order for, for you to live your best life with your dog, your dog has to be confident and happy to be traveling and being in a new locations and being out and about. Um, so happiness and joy, I think, you know, that's, I would think happiness and joy. Probably if we just say happy, that's gotta be everybody. I would think everybody's list of priorities for their dogs, connection and confidence. I know that's on my list of priority for sure. Arlene, those are good ones. Oh, Sarah Johnson. You always come up with such good ones. Freedom to be themselves. I was trying, how do I put that into, into words? Because I know my early dogs didn't have it. And, um, to know that they can show their true personality and know that they're appreciated. So on my list, cause I did this exercise this morning on my list, it was, um, they were, uh, they were characters that they, and I think Sarah, you said it much more eloquently than I did. They have freedom to be themselves. All right. So, um, priorities, fitness, and the ability to settle. I think those are really great. Um, feeling we read each other's minds sometimes. So I put that on my list and maybe start writing a list. Now, this is a list of priorities that you would put down for your dog. And I, I didn't bring my list up. That's downstairs in the kitchen, but, um, happy was number one. And it's hard. I guess it was a tie, happy and healthy were my one and two. They were tied like on the podium at the, at the Olympics. They were both standing on number one spot. And, um, and then the, we're, we're going with how Sarah wrote it freedom to be themselves, meaning my early dogs that were trained with, um, aversion and punishment. They behave how they thought I wanted them to behave instead of being their goofy selves. They're, I mean, yeah, they, they still were playful, but not the way my dogs are today. They, they, um, they live, you know, like, like dances if nobody's watching, right? That's the kind of attitude my dogs have now. So, um, freedom to be themselves and somebody wrote connection. I think that's a biggie for me. I didn't see one thing I didn't see on anybody's list is obedient. Is that a priority for your dog? Obedient. Generally friendly. Okay. Right. So how do we get that? How do we get, like, I just think this is a great conversation.

So I personally don't like the word obedient, but yet my dogs, um, from somebody looking in, they would say Susan's dogs are very obedient, but that isn't. But the priority for me is that I have the most engagement possible from that dog. If my dog is happy and engaged with me, then their behaviors are going to be things that I want them to do. So they're going to be engaged with me. Yes. At home when I'm holding a stick of cheese. Okay. It's a bad example. Cause I never used cheese to treat my dogs, but you get the idea. Yeah. Or in a training class environment or when we're walking out and there might be wildlife. or when we're in a busy city street. So that happy and engaged self, and here's a couple of other really good ones that they can relax and they're cooperative and that we train them with cooperation. So the word my dog is obedient. I think maybe I'm triggered because of the do it, but damn it, that was part of my upbringing in the world of dogs. That if my dog chooses, for example, I was training tonight before the live, I was training directionals with my young puppy and with my three-year-old dog, and it wasn't a great training session. And I know, for example, the last session I had with Prophet, he didn't make a single mistake, but tonight he couldn't get his lefts correct. And it would be easy to say, you know this, you've done this perfectly. And instead, I know I have a happy, engaged puppy who will always choose the correct thing if he clearly understands it. So I'm like, okay, there is no defiance. There is no, I choose this better. It's, Susan, let's go back and see how we can, and the way I look at it always is, if my dog is struggling with this, my students' dogs will be struggling with this, and I don't want that. I want to have a training protocol that makes sense and gives clarity to all dogs. And so that's my wish. And so the word obedient, he wasn't being obedient. If you were looking, he was choosing to do something other than what I said. And there was a bowl of food right in front of him. And I wanted him to turn left to the bowl of food to the left, but that bowl was maybe closer or more accessible. So you could say he was being stubborn. He was being obstinate. He was on his own agenda. He was blowing me off. He knew what I wanted. You could say all those things. And in my opinion, you'd be 100% wrong. Because at the end of the day, our dogs always do the best they can with the education we've given them and the environment we've put them in. And when you believe that, it's easy to have and live that connected, engaged, happy life with your dog. And the word obedience

doesn't have to come into the conversation. Right? So it's just a convention that comes from traditional dog training that I don't feel we need. Arlene said, I feel if confident, the obedience will come through. So yes, through the games. If the dog is confident and they are engaged with what we're training and how we're training it, then things like confidence comes as they get more reinforcement for choosing the right thing. That's the really cool thing about training with games is no matter where you are at, you recognize that the dog's doing their best. Okay? So what about this has been too big of a jump, too big of a challenge? Is it the environment or is it the... So in today's example, I think it was the environment because maybe it was a little later that I was feeding him his dinner. Maybe he was a little hungrier. So I'm just going for the closest thing. Can I just do the closest thing? That's what we want. Okay? So yeah, I love this conversation. I love what you guys are saying. So, you know, to the... Like somebody visiting my house who is not what I would call part of our community, the way that many of you who added to this list, you think the way I think about dogs. So if somebody who was outside of our thinking was to visit my house and see me with my dogs, that's the number one thing they say. I can't get over how obedient your dogs are. It's amazing how obedient they are. That they would walk out the front door and we've got an extra wide front door and they're ready to try and stop the dog as they go out. And my dogs are all sitting back going, what's your dealio, fella? Like, we're not going anywhere. No one said, right? We're good. And they're like, my friends that are visiting that are not dog people, I do have some of those, by the way. They'll be like, they're not trying to rush out the door. And if I go out and tell them they can come with me, they go out and they, well, what are we doing now? They're engaged with me. All right? So now, if I was to invite all of you who are contributing to this conversation, who get what I'm saying over my house, you know the number one thing that would come out of your mouth is your dogs are such unique characters. Like, you would expect that they're engaged. You would expect that they understand how I want them to live life, that if a door opens, they don't bolt through. That when they see a bunny and if I call them, they immediately go, oh yeah, okay, sorry. I know what it was. Right? Like that, those are almost, you expect that from Susan Garrett's dogs. But the thing that blows people away who are in the family, they're like, wow, they're just, they're such unique characters.

And I think that's super cool. That's what I think. And that's what I would love for you. That's what I would love for all of you to have. And I see so many of you on here that are in our programs. And so, you know, maybe you're working towards that. And I recognize my life is going to be very different than your life in that I spend a great deal of time training dogs. Maybe not always my own dogs, but I love to help my online students by evaluating different scenarios with different breeds of dogs. And so, you will be in a different place. You might have like, you know, a parent living with you that demands a lot of your attention. And you might have small children and you have a full-time job and you have to, you know, get your family in order. So your time might be minimal, but here's the really cool thing. You can get the same thing. It just takes you longer to get there. And that's what's really cool. I'm going to, I'm trying to read these comments. And yeah, look at that. So this is what, Teresa has got what we call the ascension. So people come to us and they start with Homeschool the Dog and Wag Nation, and then they join Recallers. Now, some people start in Recallers and go, wait a minute, I feel like I missed something. And they'll go back and get Homeschool the Dog and Wag Nation. So for those of you that are sitting there in your home or listening on your phone and watching this live and going, well, today is the last day for me to make this decision if I'm going to join one of those ladies' programs, then that's typically what people do. Crate Games would be, you know, the one, if I can't, if you can't do anything, join Crate Games. And then if you have the opportunity to do Crate Games and Homeschool the Dog, you're off to the races. You're in the family. You are going to be coached by myself and my students. And then you get a little bit of this progress and go, wait a minute, I get that. And then you move on to Recallers. And from Recallers, you might move on to your agility. Who knows? Some of you might stay in Recallers for life as many people who are in there. And yes, pedicure please, as DeeDee says. So, I'm going to give you a little example of what pedicure please can bring you. So, some of you have seen this. When Tater Salad came to live with us, he was a rescue dog and he, I don't have a very good video of him because it was dangerous to be near him when you attempted to clip his nails or dremel his nails. And what, I'm going to show you a little video clip is of me trying to touch his nail with a spoon, just a spoon. add. It's strong too. So, a spoon, that's all I was trying to do is touch him with a spoon. Now, I'm going to, hope the volume

doesn't come through on here because if he hears that, he's going to be up the stairs. But this is a video of Tater Salad I don't know, last year. you can hear that. I'm not calling him and there's nobody else in the house. Hey bud, did you want your nails cut? Oh, I know. Come on over here where everyone can see you. I know, it's exciting, it's nail cutting time. Nail cutting time. Yeah, so good. So good, isn't it? Time to cut the nails. You were sleeping but you got to cut your nails. Yeah, catch. So good boy. So, that's where DeeDee says, Crate Games, Pedicure Please. Those are great places to start. Now, Pedicure Please is also in Recallers. So, if you're going, when you get in Recallers, there's other little programs that you can go to but Pedicure Please is the program where I could bring up any one of my dogs and do the same thing. Although, I cut my dog's nails lying on their side. I think Tater, when he first came, he had a horrible time breathing. So, sitting up was better for him. We had some surgery. He had a nose job. Let's be real. His breathing is fine now. But, he's the only dog that prefers to have his nails cut that way. So, that is, that is, just from the Pedicure Please program, you can have a dog who loves to, oh my God, Sarah, you're so funny. Tater's my spirit animal. Oh, okay. So, and you're, like I said, you're all going to be in different places. And, I'm just going to show you a little clip of a couple of other, this was one of our students. She, Clara had a dog who, she lived in a, where, what country is Clara from, Linda? Croatia? No. Slovakia. Slovenia. And, she said, there are feral cats everywhere, everywhere. And, it was horrific with her golden retriever to try and walk down the street. Could you imagine? She said, like, she would see, like, dozens of cats on every walk and it was just, like, a daily fight with that. She started with three colors and I said, you just have to be patient, play the games and this was after the program. So, I could show you video and video and video of my own dogs, but I don't think that impresses you as much because it's, you, you, you could say, Susan, you're a professional dog trainer. Well, I could keep showing you, keep showing you video clips of our students have gone through Homeschool the Dog and Recallers and the turnaround that they've had with their dogs. and it, you know, I'm sure you all have that one challenge. Maybe it's not feral cats in your, in your town. Maybe it is squirrels. Maybe it is my dog. I can't walk them

during regular hours because I'm afraid my dog will see a child or another dog on leash or whatever it is that your dog doesn't have the confidence yet to be able to handle that level of distraction. And so, their only defense is to have a good offense. And so, they react. They have this big explosion on the end of the leash and you feel like, I think in many, many cases, you feel there's something wrong with the dog, but you also feel shame because you get those dirty looks, don't you? You get those, can't you do something with that dog? Why don't you correct that dog? And so, I know for the people that I've talked to that have this problem, they prefer just to go out like at two o'clock in the morning where they don't have to deal with that. And it doesn't have to be like that. Like we give the dogs a way that they can engage with us in a healthy way. You start to get the kind of relationship that I'm talking about. And then, the things in the environment are less important. I'm not saying that you join Homeschool the Dog or you join Recallers and all your problems are magically going to melt away and you will only see rainbows and unicorns every time you go out the street. It's going to be an investment of time on your part by playing these games. But remember, you're playing games. And so, like it's fun. And so, you'll want to do it. That's the thing. So, Arlene said, even with bad mechanics and beginner level training, your dog will improve quickly, improve a lot. Maybe not perfect, but huge improvements. And how many of you have signed up for a local class and then, at the end of it, we're told, your dog failed or you had to miss too many classes? Well, when you're in an online program like ours, there is no, you miss them. You do the classes when they work for you. That that is how you have success because maybe you're like me and you like getting up at five o'clock in the morning when the house is empty and you'll go to a little area where you start playing these games with your dogs or maybe you're not like me and you're one of those people who are up at 11 o'clock at night. I can't relate, but that's okay. We can still be friends. But you might be wanting to train your dog at that hour of night. Okay? So, desensitization and generalization for dogs and helping a dog to be more confident in one environment. That's what we get and that's why we ask you to have a training, Dan. Go through our classes. Get that great, confident skill. And it could be, Phoebe says, can we do something? I'll just show you a few little things with belief. These skills, she's here in my office, which we don't do much training in my office except when I'm doing something live. But that is, that is where it starts.

So I'm just going to change the camera. I'm going to, she's like, I gave up. I gave up. I'm just going over here and I'm having a little snooze. Okay. So, all right, Bae. Strike. Strike. So I've got the toy. She's engaged. Mine. Down. Strike. Yeah. And if I was to put, this is going to be tough. I got a little terrier and I got a bowl of food here. Put the food on the ground. Yeah. You were doing something. You were doing something. Mine. Down. Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee. Strike. Nice. Mine. Cook. Good. Now I'm going to tell her, search. There's a whole empty bowl here. Search. Strike. But she didn't say, oh, I'll just finish that bowl. She just said, yeah, swagger's like, I should be in there. Okay. Can you hop it up in the bed? I actually hop it up in that bed. I'll put the cookies close and I'm going to go open the gate so swagger can come in. Come on, monk. Now, do I have to guard that food? Do I have to get off my bed? Swagger says, I can take that. I don't know where there's more. Can you hop it up here, swag? Is there a dog toy for swagger back there? Good. B, strike. Nice. Nice. So I might say, there's a bowl of cookies. Can you touch my hand over the bowl of cookies? Good. Good. Good. Good. Hop it up. Come here, bud. Come on. Take it up. Good. What is it? There's more. It's turning the bone. He's happy to have that. Okay. Okay. Good boy. There you go, bud. Okay. And so, and then, then maybe, let's get these, I'm going to trip over them is what I'm going to do. And then maybe, I'll put the toy on the ground. B, can you get in your bed? Mine? Thank you. B. We'll just deal. Side. There we go. Side. Good. Close. Good. Beep. Good. Bring me. Yeah. Good boy. Okay. You hop it up in your bed. You can have the toy and get in bed. Okay. So, those are just, we get some skills. So, how do we work on counter conditioning? We get some skills. Might have to take that squeaker away from that puppy. So, I just gave you an example of a bunch of skills. Hand touch, tugging, get into the side, come between my legs. Um, so we get some skills where the dog is confident and happy to do them. Now, we do them in a bunch of different, um, environments. Now, I showed you, what, four or five games? And she probably knows, I don't know, 70 or 80 or 100 of them. And so, I teach, we teach that and then we take it to a new environment. We generalize it. And so, if there's an environment that a dog with very few skills that really doesn't have anything that they engage with their owners with, they see something that they're a little afraid of, they're going to go, oh my God, what is that? That's all my focus. Instead of a dog who has so many skills, different things, games, tools that I can pull out and say, hey, how about you get some focus on me? And they're going,

oh yeah, yeah, yeah, we play this in about 200 different locations. I love this. All right? So, that is why this works so well to help minimize the level of distraction in that dog's environment and help the dog go, oh, yeah, I get this. This is, this is, this is the time to engage with you. Okay, Pam has a great question. And if you guys have questions about going through the program, then please ask. So, I have two pups. Should I teach them separately or together? Let me tell you about Susan Garrett in 1990. I had two dogs and they were, I think, two and a half years apart, maybe three. And, and, and what I would do is I would get home from work and I would have one dog, just like you, I don't know if you could see Swagger on the couch. I would have one dog hop it up on the couch and I would train that one, that other dog. And in our programs, we will teach you how to get a dog who is, who will confidently stay up in whatever area. It could be a dog bed. It could be, Swagger just likes being on the couch. He's probably the only dog in the house that's allowed on the couch. And so, and then I would, I would switch and then it's the next dog's turn. So yes, you absolutely can teach them together. But I think it's also important, especially if you have a problem, like a dog is not as confident when you go out in public and so they feel the need to react to another dog. I love taking a confident dog out with a dog who wants to react. but it's also so important that that dog, once you've generalized these environments with the, what I call an anchor dog, that that dog can go places on their own. So yes, I do train my dogs together a lot, but it's super important that they have the confidence to know that they can train alone as well. So maybe, what does that look like? I'll leave one dog in my bedroom and then I'll train the other dog. I make sure that they're far enough away that the dog that's in the bedroom isn't going to get anxious. start barking or I might give them like a food puzzle to do in my bedroom while I'm training this dog. Okay? Aw, thank you. Sarah said, Swagger is so gorgeous and he has so much pep in his step for his age. Thank you. That's, that's, that's kind of you to say. So separate until no debate is my motto. So I, I, if you have two puppies of the same age, yeah, you want to make sure that they spend most of their time away from each other and come together to play every now and again. Absolutely. We have students that have gone through our programs with so many different non-dog animals. So definitely, cats are, are a big one. We've had horses, we've had parrots, we've had rats, ferret. Yeah, a lot of different, different species other than dogs that have gone

through our program. No, I'm not playing my guitar. My guitar is, I'm a, let me just say I'm a much better dog trainer than I am a guitar player. I play, I just play to keep, to entertain myself. What is the question? Nicole writes, is there a payment plan offered for these courses? Oh, okay. Is there a payment plan offered for the courses that are on set? Yes. So if you go to capebydog.com forward slash four years, you'll see that there is an opportunity to break it into installments. Yeah, for sure. This is an excellent point, Susan. We humans also learn how to generalize the principles of games to many situations and then we gain confidence too. Absolutely. Not only do we gain confidence in our dogs, in ourselves because we can predict what our dog's doing. If you have a dog, like unfortunately, how so many dogs live their life with expectations that are up to here, but the level of engagement and the willingness to put in the time to build that dog's confidence is very low. And so, so many people, so many dogs live their life. Like you're just, come on, you're two. What are you doing doing this anymore? I told you already. And so, what you get when you play, play your way to this amazing relationship and this amazing dog is that, you know, oh, my dog is showing a level of uncomfortableness. I can tell by his body. I'm getting him out. We're going to go out into the hall and we're going to play some games. Now I see how he's more comfortable. I'll take a step into the threshold. How is he dealing with that? We'll play some games there. Then we'll go back into the hall. So there's things that you can do, right? That's that dogs who don't have owners or parents that are willing to put in the time to get engagement, they live a different life, a life that's filled with frustration from the dog's point. And an owner has these massive expectations of their behavior that they can't fulfill because nobody's taken the time to get the confidence at home. Go off to a training class, which by the way is going to cost you a lot more than something like homeschool the dog. Go off to a training class and you're trying to teach in a place where most dogs are either overexcited or worried or stressed or anxious because this is a new novel environment. Get that confidence at home. Get the dog saying, yes, I can do this at home. And then guess what happens if you choose to go to a local class after that. But a lot of our students have just gone all the way sailing through our programs and have and invested the time to say, I like going out for lunch. I'm taking my dog out to outdoor patio. I like to, you know, and they just take their dogs out more and more and see a change in the confidence level

coming up in their dogs. Okay. Yeah, I could see that. Going to a local class when a dog, I mean, again, some local class instructors don't even know what's best for the dogs. And, you know, I've seen some horrible things happen in the name of dog training in classes. And people do the best they can. I don't want it to sound like I'm being judgmental of other people. like there's like these big box stores who just have people read a binder and teach these dogs and it's horrific to see. Okay. Oh, I wish I knew how to say your name. Is it Sudoku? This is a great question. Do you have a universal tip how to increase handler confidence? I'm almost paralyzed with indecision when trying to train and I have no confidence in myself. First of all, I'd like to give you a hug. It's easy for me. I've been doing this for more than 30 years. It's easy for me because I've seen people at the depth of despair with their dogs thinking I've never done this before. I'm going to screw this up. And I have the confidence to know if they just follow directions, they're going to have an amazingly well-trained dog. And they do. But where you're sitting right now, that doesn't help you. And so you need to be in an environment, number one, where you feel safe. Number two, where you feel heard. Where there will be people to give you examples. And that's why our online community, I just can't tell you how amazing they are and how amazing, like I love being in there. Back in 2019, my husband passed away and I actually didn't work for many months. But I would go into the online classrooms because I just love to watch and read the stories of how people supported each other. And that was great for me to pass my time. And as I dealt with my grief, I love our online communities because our motto of Be Kind, it isn't just about being kind to dogs. It isn't just about being kind to somebody else's dog. It's about being kind to yourself, giving yourself some slack because your feelings of a lack of confidence that are paralyzing you, that's not new. You are not the first person. And it's 100% legitimate to feel like that. And so playing a game where there really is no right or wrong, there's just look at the video and say, what are the things that I could do better? Because when you are playing a game, you're not screwing anything up. There isn't emotional damage done to your dog. As long as your dog's having fun, it's all good. All right? So, Sudoku, I really hope, oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. Sudoku said, I've been yelled at by in-person trainers and it made me not want to try again. Wow. Again, that in-person trainer is doing the best they can with the education they've been given and the environment that they've been put in

and maybe dealing with somebody who just needs somebody to say, listen, let me be your confidence until you can grow some of your own. Lean on me because we have coaches in our program that are going to watch your videos and say, this is why you're amazing. You're doing this, this, and this. And the fact that you feel safe enough to bring this up and alive, like I just honor that. That's amazing. And I hope you're in a position where you can join one of our programs and we can coach you through that. And I promise you, the engagement with your dog, and this is, I've said this on lives before, here's what I believe. I believe that dogs are healers and they come into our lives to help us ascend to be the best version of ourselves. And maybe they present as a dog who has had a background where they've been abused or maybe they present as a dog who is less confident and needs somebody to believe in them. But whatever it is that the challenge that your current dog is presenting to you, I believe that you have got that dog so that you can ascend to be the best person possible so you can live your best life possible all because you've helped that dog live their best life possible. And then, you'll get another dog and you'll get new challenges and you'll grow a little bit more. That's what I believe that dogs do for, I know that's how my life has been and I've just seen it happen with so many of our students as well. All, everything, all of the prices are in American dollars and that's because most of our students are international and Canadian visa and Canadian, the Canadian credit cards. We had so many problems with people being, thinking we were a fraud when we were billing in Canadian dollars. So, we have, all of our prices have been adjusted to be American prices, I don't know, probably for 20 years now. Okay? I agree, Irene. It's just such a kind and supportive community. And I think that the more you try to be a reinforcement-based dog trainer for your dog, the more your coach to look for what's good. And when you see something you don't like, then we look at what can we do differently? Like, how can we arrange our home? How can we arrange our training environment? How can we arrange our time training? So, we look at what we can control in ourselves rather than insisting a dog needs to do things differently. And that's how things, and so, when you train that way, then, when you have somebody in your community that's struggling, you're looking for what's good, you're helping them. And so, that's, it's, you know, we have a free Facebook group. We have several of them. And I've talked to my friends who own dog training business and they go, oh, we're having to kick people

out of those free groups all the time. We don't. It is rare because it's so clear we're about kindness. So, if you come in with your guns barreling and saying, I want to, I want to have a showdown here on why I can't use my electrical collar, then you're going to be faced with a lot of people being kind and you're going to say, this isn't the right group for me. Then you're going to leave. That's the way it works. Love, love, love our online community. Okay. Looking for any other. Absolutely. You can borrow confidence from the other students who are, who have been around and have trained their dogs in our programs that, and that's the, another really cool thing about program like Recallers or Homeschool the Dog or Handling 360, that people come in on year one and then they'll stay because of the community and the fact that we add something new every year and they just stay. They, they stay and they are part of the community and they are there to support people like anybody who comes in and says, I, I'm, I'm struggling. Are there bundles? I don't think we have any bundles. I was scolded by our search and rescue trainer for timing a few times. She was right, but she also gave me exercises and helped me build confidence by videoing myself. That definitely helps. Listen, I was an instructor back in the mid-90s that I would get upset with people when I would see them doing things inappropriate, that I thought was inappropriate to the dogs, that I thought was being mean to their dogs. So I'm sure I made people feel bad as well. So all of these instructors who yelled at you or made you feel bad, just know that that's their best version of themselves and that person probably isn't still around today because they've developed into a newer person because they're still in dogs and that dog is helping them to be a better version of themselves. Okay. I'm looking to see if there's any other questions. Let me, I'm just gonna show you another one of our community. So this is LaDonna who is kind of a pillar of Recallers. So she had three Dalmatians. One was deaf when she first joined us and it was crazy town. Everything was crazy town and just through Recallers like things have changed. It's different. It's night and day, right? And it's funny that the way that our community works, LaDonna lost her husband last year and Kim and I were driving down to Florida and we surprised LaDonna and dropped in on her. Maybe we shouldn't have done it when it was pitch black at night. Didn't realize she lived in the country but that's another story but that's just the way never met. You know, we've had tens of thousands of people go through our classrooms but every single dog and every single person is still part of our family and we think of that. We think

of everybody that way. I struggle with over excitement over stimulation during training sessions and barking where to start. So Nicole, you start in one of our classrooms and you know every dog is going to be different. So my dog this she needed to be boosted up every single training session. A dog like Belief who's a little bit more high then she's a dog who we spend a lot of time doing our relaxation protocol and building calm into them. Yes, she still has fun. Yes, we still do tugs. We just don't go as crazy. So I always say there's a yin and a yang and if the dog is high you have to be centered and grounded and calm when you're playing these games. So there's still games with a dog like that I might use more food and less toys but depending on what's called for in a dog like this I might use more toys and less food. Food, you know, think about eating a big meal it's like it's calming it's yeah. So maybe with a dog who needs a little bit more pep in the step we don't use as much food. Can we hear more about your dogs having emotional reactions to other dogs on leashes working through fear and frustration? So we did talk about that. We did answer that question. What is the best course for distance handling? Definitely Pat handling 360. Definitely. Okay. So I just want to see your K. how long can you dogs remember how long can you dogs remember that you told them to hop it up and therefore need to be released versus they decide just to hop it up themselves and they can yeah so if they just go into a hot zone they can come and go anytime they want if I've asked them to hop it up I will release them at some point right so before I leave the room or when I come back if I wanted them to stay there longer okay so the video that I'm going to show you now is a student of ours from the she's from the big island of Hawaii and she started as many of you are thinking about started in one of our actually Homeschool the Dog wasn't even around when she joined she joined Recallers and came back and joined Homeschool the Dog played so I'll let you the story is kind of interesting she came she joined our program because she was having some fear reactivity problems with her German Shepherd puppy so maybe some of you can relate but definitely it's a it's a great video if I can I built it all up I hope I've got my video here it's a it's a great video for everybody to to cheer for the underdog to know what's possible if you are willing to be patient with your dog yes they might be reacting yes they might be fearful yes they might be people might be because it's a shepherd they might people might be going you've got to take that dog in hand you've got to lay down the law you've got to let that dog know who's boss because he is just and and there's a I just feel for so many people who get put in that position because there's a lot of shame and guilt that you internalize and it's not yours it's theirs your dog is struggling they don't need you to be blaming them they need you to empathize with them and to help grow that confidence and to help bring them into another place all right my I see that the video is still processing so I'm going to come back and look if there's any more questions questions Denise one of the most valuable things I learned was to do short sessions keep her wanting more sometimes it's hard to stop absolutely thanks Pat I wish I could afford it maybe in the future that was from Nicole and really I'm not going to say everybody can afford it I'm going to say that you all have priorities but I know it is an investment it is not an expense that if you can't afford it homeschool the dog it's $49 right now it's normally a $300 program it's $49 you can't even get a checkup out of veterinarians for $49 and homeschool the dog might save your dog from ingesting something they shouldn't might save your dog from getting into a scrap with another dog and what it does is it puts you into a community so maybe in the future how old is your dog that you're saying maybe in the future I would love

for everybody with a new puppy or a new rescue dog to be in our programs but here's the truth it is rarely the people with the new puppies or the new rescue dogs that join the program do you know why because they're in a honeymoon right now and all they see is stars it's not and selling prevention is difficult but I'm selling joy because it's games you're playing and so if I said it's games that's going to help make sure you don't get into those positions where your back is against the wall where you feel like you can't get this because your dog is overwhelming you that's that's why you join now and you don't say I'll get to that later if there's any way that you can Nicole I would absolutely 100% be doing it now okay I'm going to share Mary Jo's story and please leave a comment about what you know because this is going to touch your heart this story it's longish it's four minutes long but it's it'll go by like that because it's I think it's a story everyone can identify with and then I'll come back and answer more questions my life transformed from frustration to joy in relating with my dog I'm Mary Jo Stevenson Fullen and we live in Minoli Hawaii on the biggest island and my dog's name is Blue Blue well when we first got Blue he was a puppy and you know we took him to puppy class we took him to obedience class and he was doing great until he became afraid of new people and other dogs and you know we'd go to the obedience trial and he got so afraid so nervous he just wanted to leave the ring he was also afraid of the vacuum cleaner where he wanted to bite the hose he would sometimes he would go run to the fence at our house and bark at the neighbor's car as they would go by so there were just a bunch of things yeah I didn't want him to be afraid I wanted to but I didn't know how to help him and the first thing that we saw was that she was teaching the veto game which was where the dog would do a backside jump and then without even she didn't even speak a word and yet trained the dog to do this backside jump so I showed my husband this and he said well her dogs do that because they already know how to do a backside jump it will never work for our dog and so I tried it and surprise without me speaking a word he learned to do that backside jump first session and it was just an amazing thing and then then we tried the two by two weave poles the method that Susan Garrett uses and he learned how to do weaves without me trying to lead him through the weaves or lure him through the weaves and I was just so amazed and now he's got this this weaving behavior that he never misses helping him to be confident by the training that we were doing the fears started getting to be less and less and less

and we still have troubles at times but I've learned how to just go layer upon layer to condition this positive response he's not wanting to just go off on his own and do his own thing he wants to be with me he loves to play he's happy being a recaller's pup he's happy being with me he's happy learning it's exciting for him to learn new things just by being rewarded our relationship has just become one that's really reinforcing for both of us absolutely worth every penny and my whole perspective on dog training shifted and I know for like especially for agility you know where it was before it was just a struggle to try to train and what to do or maybe just focusing on the obstacles on the course and it shifted my whole thing to just helping my relationship to be connected with my dog it also spills over into other areas of life where you can take these same principles and use it in relationship with people well I would recommend recallers to anybody who loves dogs anybody because you'll get something out of it even if you've been a dog trainer for years it just it really helps to build connection with the dog everybody learns I'm still learning and I've been in the program for years how about that doesn't that have some hearts for Mary Jo and did you notice Blue getting his nails done in that video and like she's just taken on every bit every part of every program and a little bit at a time having to do a little you know whatever she could and then she came back and she joined Homeschool the Dog and so okay question what's the best class for reactivity so you know reactivity is is such a gamut that it really depends on how reactive your dog is and the age of the dog and the breed of the dog and how dangerous the reactivity is to you or to other people or to other dogs and so I suggest recallers because we can coach you for a year however I don't want to I don't want to promise that all of your problems are going to go away I will 100% promise your dog's engagement with you will get better that your dog will have a lot of different skills that you can generalize to different areas which will develop more engagement for you which means the rest of the environment is going to become a safe place for the dog but I can't say all the reactivity is going to go away because I don't know your story your dog's story you might need to be working with a veterinarian behaviorist but I can tell you we've had all kinds of dogs that have come through the program and I'll just grab one that I think I can find a couple of stories here here's one with I don't know if this is the greatest video of Ray but Ray would react oh böyle

Oh, hi. So that's just one example. There's so many, I'm just trying to grab different examples. There's so many examples of dogs that were leash reactive to other dogs on leash. You saw the one of our dog that was chasing cats. Here's another one of a rescue that had a reactivity issue with cats at home. So whatever that challenge is, I think when you give a dog structure and engagement in a way that they can express safely, I'm not comfortable, then they're helping you to know what's next. And remember, we have all kinds of coaches all around the world that coach in our online programs so that you can pretty much guarantee you can ask a question within an hour, somebody's going to answer you because the coaches live in all different, there's somebody awake when you're awake. That's the really cool thing. Okay. Do we have desensitizing shadows? Yes. We have had several shadow chasing dogs that have had success coming through our program. And most recently, one just recently just did a video, but we've had some severe, what was the dog in England? Yeah, she was shadow chasing. They had to live in the dark. So yes. Again, the same way, we teach you to control the stimulus. Right. I don't do in-person. I won't. I'm just so busy doing this. And I teach, I do teach in Australia once in a while and in Europe once in a while. I have taught, well, that's another part. I've taught one-on-ones many, many years ago. I've taught classes here. I've taught lectures where I've had a hundred people. And I find the dogs do the absolute best. I've taught students who go online. And even if you have the opportunity to come here. Come here every week versus being in our online classroom, you will be better off in our online classroom. And I'm talking about how to hold the leash. And you are like trying to, is that, what did I have? That burrito. I probably shouldn't eat that burrito. And you can't take it all in. But when you're watching a video, you've got your PDF. Maybe you're a person who loves to read. I prefer videos myself. And so you can pause and then go and do it and then come back and just try to become a little Susan Garrett mimic. And that's what our students are. They sound like me. They play the games like me. And that's why they have brilliant success with the programs. Um, what's the difference between H360 and agility nation?

Should I even consider them if I'm still working on recallers? Okay, DD. Send a note to the team and they can help you with that. I don't know how, how successful you are just yet in recallers. So if you've got, you've got some games under your belt and things are going well, you're maybe, you know, halfway through the program, then yes, handling 360, um, could be a great idea. So handling 360 is the, definitely the one I would take before agility nation, because you, it's the dog learning to focus on the work. It's games that add the dog. I focus on there because too many dogs focus on the person when they do agility. We need them focusing on lines and we need to teach you how to create those lines for the dog. that's why. Um, Oh, thank you. Whoever put in the story of shadow chasing in there. That's awesome. Um, yes. See, I can't, I can tell when I travel at competitions and I can hear people saying, good girly that they train with me. Get that thing or hop it up as another giveaway. Okay. If you are planning on getting a dog, consider joining, this is from Gail, consider joining the program before the dog comes. You will be prepared to start teaching as soon as you pick up the dog. And that's a great advantage. We have a lot of people that do that, that they go through the program in it. And we actually had one person who went to a local shelter and started a program on some of the shelter dogs, which I thought was a brilliant idea. But they just wanted to go and be prepared. It was before they got the dog because this is a brand new way of teaching or of learning for them. And so they, that's what they, oops, hold on. My brother's calling me. So I think that's really excellent advice. Okay. Any other questions? Emily, again, contact the team. I would say with homeschool the dog, because it's, there's a, there's less to get through that. It is not a problem doing homeschool the dog and recallers at the same time, but I don't want to steer and you can join. And here's what we're going to do. You can join. And if you say after two weeks, this is overwhelming, contact my team and say, Susan said I could put a recallers on hold until I finish homeschool the dog. And then I can come back and then we'll just put it, put your membership and recallers on hold. I hope I didn't get myself in trouble by saying that, but I don't want to overwhelm you. I don't, I don't want you to overwhelm your dog. Okay. What was the dog that I personally own that has given me my greatest challenge? Probably this. But it would be a, a tie because at the time decaf, who was born in 2000, she was a massive challenge,

but probably had the same problems that this he did. And I just didn't know what was, um, um, dog food would have helped her. And then before that Buzzy who I wrote the book shaping success about. So those are the three, but when I had Buzzy, like it was 1996, I didn't know, like anywhere near the nuances of shaping behavior that I do now. So in the midst of that, and nobody in the world was trying to use reinforcement based dog training to excel at the high level of dog training. And so, um, it felt like I was alone on an Island and it felt like a real challenge. So those three, I think were all the biggest challenges, but I'm so grateful that I got them in the order that I did so that when I got this, I was in a position of knowledge where I am today.
