ability it's really hard for us to know that once upon a time like you weren't good at stuff right [Laughter] and you know there's a there's a lot of you know especially speaking for my own generation there's a lot of impatience there's a lot of huge desire to want to get good really fast there's a lot of passion that kind of sometimes go misdirected and so you know we'd really like to dive in to understanding a little bit more of your story how you started what your passions were who your mentors were et cetera et cetera et cetera because this is a journey i've been doing this now for 12 years myself mariano almost 10 years now and um it's it is a journey and you would ask me when i was 18 years old i wouldn't have told you like yeah i'm going to be a professional dog trainer yeah no i didn't think that it was one of those things that you follow your passion you follow your heart as tyler muto said last week he said you know dog training can be very mentally stimulating if you allow it to be and i i couldn't agree more so anyways uh let's go ahead and hand it over to you michael um again thank you so much for being on this podcast let's dive into the story that is michael ellis sure thank you guys again for having me on i really appreciate it um i think you hit on a couple of things that are really important right we live in a time where people are sort of um enamored with instant gratification right you can get a lot of things fast and get information fast you can get lots of things fast but uh we all know that expertise there takes time period there's no shortcutting it and we're in a good time in that you have access to lots of information that frequently took longer to acquire like i came up through the dog training club system i'll talk about in a second through that club system and so you had to physically go to fields and meet trainers to see what was going on now there were no training schools in the same way that there are now the internet was not active so there was didn't exist and so people weren't getting access to the same kind of information you can now and so that is great we can you can jump start certain things you can you can get an education faster than you used to be able to but you can't shortcut the the hands-on experience it just takes time you got to do it you got to be there you got to see it somebody can tell you something but regardless of and you may that may make sense to you but that doesn't mean you know it you know it in your body in your heart and like you've i've seen this i've done it i felt it i know what it should feel like all those kinds of things so so hopefully the passion that people

그들이 충분히 오래 남아 실력을 쌓을 수 있게 하는 원동력이 되길 바랍니다 왜냐하면 지름길은 없기 때문입니다 정보를 얻는 지름길은 있을지 몰라도 진정한 지식에 이르는 지름길은 없습니다 진정한 의미의 지식 말이죠. 그래서 저는 시작했습니다 남부 캘리포니아에서 자랐고 샌디에이고에서 성장했습니다 네, 어릴 때 부모님을 끊임없이 졸라서 개를 키우게 해달라고 했고 결국 제가 13살쯤 되었을 때 허락해 주셨습니다. 저는 도베르만을 원했는데 부모님은 안 된다고 하셨지만 독일 셰퍼드는 허락해 주셨습니다 당시 셰퍼드는 사납다고 알려져 있었고 저는 물론 어린 마음에 잘못된 이유로 그들에게 매료되어 있었습니다 어쨌든 그래서 셰퍼드를 얻게 되었죠 셰퍼드 한 마리를요 그리고 부모님은 제가 개를 키우려면 직접 훈련시켜야 한다고 요구하셨습니다. 개를 키우려면 제가 돌보고 훈련시켜야 했죠. 그래서 저는 동네 독일 셰퍼드 독 클럽에 가서 복종 훈련 수업을 들었습니다 그게 저를 클럽 사람들과 연결해 주었고 주니어 핸들링을 시작하게 되었습니다. 그리고 켄넬을 운영하는 한 노부부를 위해 켄넬을 돌봐주기도 했죠. 켄넬이요. 그렇게 고등학교 내내 도그쇼에 참여하게 되었습니다. 그건 그냥 취미였어요. 고등학생 때였는데, 아마 18살쯤 도그쇼에 갔을 때였죠. 그 도그쇼에서 경찰견과 슈츠훈트 시연을 하고 있었어요. 그걸 보고 '와, 이거다' 싶었죠. 저건 무조건 해야겠다고 생각했어요. 집에 돌아와서 바로 지역 슈츠훈트 클럽을 찾아봤습니다. 제가 가진 개들은 슈츠훈트를 하기에는 전혀 적합하지 않았거든요. 그걸 할 수 있는 상태가 아니어서, 디코이(훈련 보조) 일을 시작하게 되었습니다. 저는 어리고 건강했으니까 다들 '자, 여기 소매 끼고 이거 해봐'라고 했죠. 어린 친구가 한번 해보라고 하면서요. 그렇게 그 일에 참여하게 되었고 AKC 복종 훈련과 도그쇼 등 모든 것에 관여하게 되었습니다. 그걸 직업으로 삼을 생각은 전혀 없었어요. 그저 취미였으니까요. 대학에 가서도 계속 취미로 남았죠. 펫숍에서 복종 훈련 수업을 가르치기도 했고, 아르바이트로 친구네 켄넬에서 돈을 벌기도 했습니다. 파트타임으로요. 학교를 다니면서 그런 일들을 했지만, 당신이 말했던 것처럼 이걸 직업으로 상상하지는 못했습니다. 아니요, 어떤 직업을 생각하셨었나요? 사실 저는 생물학자가 되려고 했어요, 그래서 제 학위는 생물지리학이라서요, 그러니까 자원 보전, 뭐랄까 환경 계획 그런 쪽이었죠 그래서 네, 그게 제 예전에 사귀던 여자친구가 그 전공이었는데 지금도 그렇고요, 네, 그래서 창조 세계적인 반려견 훈련사가 되는 거요 어쩌면 누가 알겠어요, 인생이 어디로 흘러갈지 생각하는 곳으로 가지 않는다는 건 확실히 말할 수 있죠 인생이 어디로 흘러갈지는 뭐 어쨌든요, 저는 분명히 환경 보호 활동가 같은 게 돼서 그런 일에 관여할 줄 알았거든요
have for training is what allows them to stay in long enough to get good at it because there aren't going to be shortcuts there there are shortcuts to information but not shortcuts to true knowledge the real kind of knowledge and so i came up i started in i grew up in southern california grew up in san diego yeah bug bugged the parents relentlessly as a kid to get a dog and they finally caved when i was about 13 and they let me get it i wanted a doberman they said no doberman but they let me get a german shepherd were vicious and i was enamored with them for all the wrong reasons of course as a kid because again whatever but i got a different shepherd and uh the parents demanded that i that i trained it if i was going to have the dog i had to take care of it and train it so i went to uh the local derma shepherd dog club and took an obedience class and that got me connected with people in the club and i started getting into junior handling and i'd kennel sit for one of the older couples that ran a kennel and i got into showing dogs all through into high school and through high school uh and so it was a a hobby and um in high school i was 18 probably i was at a dog show and there was a police and schutzen demo at this dog show and i saw that and i'm like okay that's that's for me that that's totally i gotta do that i went home and immediately looked up what a local shitzon club uh none of the dogs i had were even remotely suitable for them they weren't going to be doing it so i started doing decoy work because i was young and able-bodied so they're like here put the sleeve on do this right like work your way in kid go ahead so i i was involved in that i got in that way and i was involved in akc obedience and dog shows and all that kind of thing um no intention of turning it into a career at all right and so it was a hobby and as i went through college still a hobby and i taught like an obedience class for pet stores i worked a little bit for a friend's kennel to make money on the side part-time while i was going to school and stuff like that but i didn't envision this as a career sort of like you had said right no what did you envision as a career uh actually i was going to be a biologist so i my degree is in biogeography so resource conservation the rain like environmental planning that kind of stuff so yeah that's my one a girl i dated that was that's her major and still is yeah so creation become a world-class dog trainer maybe who knows where life's gonna take you i can tell you not where you think it's gonna take you whatever yeah i thought for sure i'd be like an environmentalist and involved in that stuff so

그래서 그 길로 들어섰을 때 마침 학교 다니던 중에 어 제가 활동하던 클럽 중 하나에 새로운 멤버들이 들어왔는데 그들이 저보고 와서 요령을 좀 알려달라고 부탁했어요, 그래서 제가 그렇게 했죠 주말에 작은 클리닉 같은 걸 했어요, 한 그룹의 훈련사들을 위해서요, 제가 다니던 사격장이나 클럽 중 한 곳에서요 그럭저럭 잘 진행됐고, 그래서 근처의 다른 클럽에서 세미나 같은 걸 열 수 있는지 물어봤어요 그들이 '저 사람이 일을 잘했으니 한번 해볼래?'라고 해서 가서 또 하나를 했죠, 그리고 어, 말 그대로 그렇게 시작됐어요, 저는 도그 스포츠에 참가하고 있었고 그걸 취미로 하고 있었거든요 그러다 가끔 세미나를 열기도 했고요 그렇게 몇 년이 지나면서 점점 탄력을 받기 시작했어요, 저는 그땐 미처 몰랐죠 광고를 하거나 사업을 시작한 건 아니었어요 그냥 클럽들이 저에게 이런 것들을 요청하기 시작했죠 그리고 어느 시점부터는 정말 바빠지기 시작했어요 그래서 대략 14년 동안 저는 돌아다니면서 반려견 훈련 클럽들을 대상으로 세미나를 열었습니다 경찰 부서나 군대 어질리티 클럽부터 복종 훈련 대회 클럽, 그리고 많은 바이트 스포츠 클럽 등 다양한 반려견 클럽들을 다녔죠 그 과정 중에 어느 순간 이런 생각이 들더군요 아 이게 내 직업이구나 네, 너무 바빠져서 아 이제는 어 이게 내가 하는 일이구나 라고 생각하게 됐죠 그리고 그 과정에서 초기에 진행했던 세미나들을 통해 아주 빨리 깨달은 게 있는데 그건 바로 무언가를 할 줄 아는 것과 다른 사람에게 그것을 가르치는 것은 완전히 다른 능력이라는 점입니다 그렇죠, 그래서 마침 제 아내가 교사 자격증이 있어서 아내가 저에게 가르치는 몇 가지 전략을 알려주었고 저도 그 부분에 관심을 두고 생각하기 시작했습니다. 초기에 했던 세미나 중 하나에서 사람들이 당신이 하는 모든 것에 대해 질문할 거라는 걸 깨달았죠 아주 사소한 것 하나하나까지요. 예를 들면 터그를 정확히 어떻게 잡는지 개에게 줄 때 어떻게 서 있어야 하는지 이런 걸 어떻게 하는지 같은 질문들이요 그래서 저는 어 잠시만요, 좀 생각해 볼게요 하게 되는 거죠 마치 어 잠시만요, 생각해 봐야겠네요 같은 상황이 되는 겁니다 반려견 훈련사로서 오랫동안 이 일을 하다 보면 그런 의미에서 자연스럽게 터득하게 되는 것들이 있는데 언제 그것을 터득했는지조차 기억나지 않고 그냥 그렇게 하게 됩니다 옳고 그름을 떠나서 그저 특정 방식대로 행동하게 되죠 그래서 저는 그런 것들에 대해 주의를 기울이기 시작했고 그것들을 하나씩 분석해 보기 시작했습니다 그러고 나니 분석하기 시작했어요 교육 전략에 관한 책을 읽기 시작했고 강연을 하게 되었을 때 사람들 앞에 서서 말을 할 때 그들의 표정을 살피는 법을 배웠습니다 그들이 제가 한 말을 이해했는지 아닌지를 확인하면서요 저는 같은 내용을 전달하는 다양한 방식에 대해 고민하는 시간을 보냈습니다 그래서 스스로를 가르치는 사람이 되기 위해 훈련하기 시작했죠 궁극적으로 말입니다 왜냐하면 그것이 바로 이 직업의 본질임을 깨달았기 때문입니다 훈련사로서 자신의 분야를 잘 아는 것도 중요하지만 결국은 다른 사람들이 이 내용을 이해하게 만들 수 있는지 그리고 그들에게
so as i went into that it just happened that while i was in school um one of the clubs that i'd worked with had some new members and they asked if i would come and help show them the ropes a little bit so i did some kind of little weekend clinic for a group of trainers at one of the shoots and clubs that i've been going to and it went reasonably well and so another club nearby had asked about hosting a seminar type thing and they said well he did a good job and you want to do it and so i went i went and did another one and um it literally started like that i was competing in dog sports and doing that stuff as my hobby and i would do a seminar here and there and over the course several years it started to pick up steam i was getting i didn't advertise i didn't start a business clubs just started to ask me to do these things and at a certain point it started to really pick up and so for 14 years i guess it was i traveled and gave seminars to dog training clubs and organizations so police departments military various dog clubs from agility clubs and competitive obedience clubs and lots of bite sport clubs and that kind of thing and at some point in there i'm like well i guess this is my job yeah it got busy enough that i'm like i uh this is this is what i'm doing i guess and um in that process i realized very quickly in the early seminars that i was doing that you can know how to do something but teaching other people to do it is a completely different skill set right and so my wife is actually has a teaching credential and i uh she gave me some strategies for teaching and i started paying attention to that to think about that i realized one of the first seminars i did i realized that people are gonna ask you about everything you do every little tiny thing like how do you hold the tug exactly like what are you standing on when you give it to the dog how do you do this and i'm like uh hold on a sec let me figure it out it's like as a dog trainer you if you're doing it for a long time in that sense then there are things that you just figured out and you don't remember when you figured them out and you're not right you just do it a certain way and so i started to pay attention to all that thing those things and i started to break them down i started to read about teaching strategies i started to when i got up in front of people and talked i learned to pay attention to their facial expressions and whether they understood what i said or not i spent thinking about different ways of saying the same things so i started teaching myself to be a teacher ultimately because i realized that's what the job was like you got to know your subject as

납득이 가는 방식으로 참여를 유도할 수 있는지의 문제였죠 그래서 세미나를 진행하는 동안 그것이 저에게는 완벽한 실험장이 되었습니다 매주 새로운 사람들 앞에 설 수 있는 기회가 주어졌거든요 매 주말마다 저는 다른 장소에 있었고 새로운 사람들과 완전히 새로운 반려견들을 만났습니다 거기에 들어가서 그들에게 이해를 시켜야 했고 그들이 자신의 반려견과 문제를 해결하는 과정을 지켜보며 조언을 해주어야 했습니다 그렇게 함으로써 제가 얻은 교육적인 경험은 정말 대단한 것이었습니다 그 경험을 통해 많은 것을 배웠습니다 그렇게 하면서 제가 얻은 교육적 자산은 정말 값진 것이었습니다 정말 어마어마했죠. 그건 아마 다섯 번을 다시 태어나도 얻지 못했을 정보였을 겁니다. 만약 제가 그런 식의 깊이 있는 탐구를 하지 않았다면 그런 종류의 교육을 받기는 힘들었겠죠. 그 기간이 끝날 무렵, 세미나를 정말 많이 할 때였는데, 2009년에 학교를 열었으니까요. 그래서 2007년과 8년, 그 마지막 2년 동안은 연간 40에서 45회 정도 세미나를 진행했습니다. 그래서 매주 다른 곳으로 비행기를 타고 이동했죠. 수요일이나 목요일에 비행기를 타고 가서 월요일에 돌아오곤 했습니다. 그러고 나면 또 다른 곳으로 떠나야 했죠. 음, 그 시기에는 정말 이런 생각이 들 지경까지 갔어요. 더 이상은 여행을 다닐 수 없다, 이러다 미치겠다 싶었죠. 그래서 그 시점에 선택을 해야 했습니다. 반려견 훈련 사업을 시작할지 말지에 대해서요. 확실히 생각해봤죠. 아내가 대학원에 다니고 우리가 뉴욕에 있을 때도 훈련을 했었거든요. 세미나도 했지만 당시에는 한 달에 한 번 정도 하는 그런 수준이었습니다. 부업으로 반려견들을 데려와 훈련시키곤 했으니까요. 그래서 훈련 사업을 시작할 수 있겠다는 생각은 했지만, 저는 사실 지난 10년 동안 훈련사들을 더 훌륭한 훈련사로 양성하는 데 능숙해져 있었거든요. 그래서 그래, 반려견 훈련 학교를 열자. 그렇게 결심했습니다. 그래서 2009년에 그 일을 시작했고, 페어필드의 한 창고에서 시작했습니다. 그것이 시작이었죠. 잘 진행되었고 그래서 제가 학교를 열기 직전에 어 저는 리어버그(Leerburg)와 연을 맺게 되었는데 사실 신디가 말했죠 어떻게 그렇게 되었는지 우리한테 좀 얘기해 줄래요? 네 그래서 에드의 반려자인 신디 로즈는 어 에드의 중요성 때문이죠 왜냐하면 저희는 예전에 당신이 리어버그인 줄 알았거든요 그건 오해입니다 그래서 맞아요 그건 의심할 여지가 없죠 아뇨 에드는 이 일을 아주 오랫동안 해왔죠 그리고 네 지금 인터넷에 있는 것들을 보면 에드는 VHS 테이프를 가지고 있었고 제가 반려견 훈련을 시작했을 때 예를 들어 KNPV가 무엇인지 알고 싶거나 영상을 보고 싶다면 어 분데스리가(Bundesliga)든 뭐든 그걸 제작하는 영상을 보려면 독일이나 네덜란드 같은 곳에 직접 가야 했거나 아니면 리어버그 VHS 테이프를 샀어야 했죠 맞아요 다른 누구도 그런 일을 하지 않았거든요 그래서 저는 오래된 VHS 테이프 상자를 가지고 있어요 어딘가에 창고에 넣어두었죠 왜냐하면 그렇게 벨기에 링(Belgian Ring)을 봤고 그렇게 KNPV를 봤으니까요 그렇게 말이죠 그 모든 자료를 말이죠 이런 유럽의 반려견 스포츠들 말이에요 그래서 그는 저에게 엄청난 영향을 주었어요 왜냐하면
a teacher but ultimately can i get other people to understand this and can i engage them in a way that makes sense to them and so that was a perfect laboratory for that while i was doing these seminars i got to land myself in front of a new group of people every week every weekend i was in some place different new group of people brand new group of dogs and you had to go in there you had to make sense to them you got to watch them troubleshoot with their dogs and give them advice and the education i gained doing that was was is immense i don't know it would take five lifetimes to get that information to get that kind of education if i wasn't if i didn't have kind of dive into that right and at the end of that period of time when i was doing seminars a lot after this was 2009 is when i opened the school so 2007 and eight those last couple of years i was doing about 40 to 45 seminars a year so i was flying someplace different every every weekend so i'd fly out on a wednesday or thursday and i'd come home on a monday and i'd fly out again somewhere else and um at that period i was just i got to the point where i'm like i can't i i can't travel anymore i'm losing my mind and so i had a choice at that point to open up a dog training business like certainly and i'd done that like while my wife was in grad school and we were in new york i did seminars but at that time i'd do you know one a month kind of thing and so i bring pet dogs on the side and all that kind of thing so i figured i could start a training business but i really spent the last decade getting good at teaching trainers to be better trainers and so well let's open up a dog trainer school and and so i did that in 2009 and started in a warehouse in fairfield and it went well and so right just before i opened the school uh i i hooked up with learberg so actually cindy wrote how did that happen tell us about that yeah so cindy rhodes uh ed's significance cause we cause we used to think you were lear burke that is a misconception that so yeah that's no doubt no hey ed's been doing this a long time and yeah what what we have on the internet now ed had vhs tapes and when i came up in dog training like if you wanted to know if you wanted to see what knpv was about or if you wanted to watch the uh the bundeseger or whatever you produce those you either went to germany or holland or whatever or you bought a liarberg vhs tape yeah nobody else was doing that so i have boxes of old vhs tapes you know somewhere in a storage because i saw a belgian ring that way i saw kmpv that way the stuff through that right these these european dog sports and so he was hugely influential on me because

'네, 그러고 싶긴 한데 시간이 없어서요. 지금 하는 일을 멈출 수가 없어요.' 매주 어디론가 가야 하는데 영상을 찍고 대본을 쓸 시간을 낼 수가 없었거든요. 그랬더니 자기가 알아서 하겠다고 하더군요. 그래서 실제로 초기 영상들은 그 친구가 세미나에서 촬영한 것들이에요. 그 친구가 세미나에 와서 비디오 촬영을 하고 돌아가서 편집을 했죠. 그게 왜 어떤 영상들은 그렇게 긴지에 대한 이유예요. 아시죠? 나중에 다시 많이 수정했지만, 초기 영상들 중 일부는 그냥 세미나 영상을 이어 붙인 거였어요. 그랬죠. 그러다가 그 과정이 진행되면서 제가 사전에 대본을 쓰기 시작했어요. 좋아요, 제가 개요를 정리하고 미리 그런 작업들을 해두겠다고 했죠. 하지만 처음엔 세미나장에서 찍은 것들이었어요. 그런데 그게 엄청난 효과가 있었어요. 덕분에 제가 세상에 알려져서, 학교를 열었을 때 이미 사람들이 저를 알기 시작했거든요. 그런 활동들 덕분이었죠. 그래서 그게 제가 학교를 시작하고 그 당시에 출장을 멈추는 데 엄청나게 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 그리고 에드가 제가 그 지역에서 진행한 다음 세미나에 왔는데, 그 친구가 '영상 찍을 생각 있어요?'라고 하더군요. 그래서 제가 '네, 그러고 싶긴 한데 시간이 없어서요'라고 답했죠. 지금 하는 일을 멈출 수가 없고 매주 출장을 가야 해서 영상을 찍고 대본을 쓸 시간을 낼 수가 없었거든요. 그랬더니 자기가 알아서 하겠다고 해서 그 친구가 촬영을 맡게 되었습니다.
because that content was it just wasn't available the internet exists yeah and so um i was doing a seminar in minnesota and uh cindy rhodes ed's significant other a very good dog trainer showed up at the seminar uh we really clicked and she went back and told ed and ed came to the next seminar i did in that area and he's like hey you want to do videos and i said and i had said uh yeah i've been wanting to but i just i don't have time i like i can't stop what i'm doing now i go somewhere every weekend and find the time to film and script them and he's like okay well we'll take care of it so he actually the initial videos he shot at seminars so he'd come to a seminar and he'd videotape and then he'd go back and cut it up that's why some of them are so long right unruly we've gone back and redone a lot of them but some of the originals were just basically cut together footage from seminars right and then as we got further into that process uh then i we i started scripting them ahead of time i kind of said okay i'll organize an outline and we'll do all that kind of stuff ahead of time but the original ones were just shot up at seminars but it was huge because that got me out there in a way that so that when the school opened people were already starting to know who i was due to that kind of stuff as well so it was hugely helpful in letting me get the school started and stopping traveling at that point in time
