저는 지금 반려견들과 산책 중인데요. 평소에는 페이스북 라이브로 진행하지만, 페이스북은 30일이 지나면 라이브 영상을 삭제하기 때문에 유튜브에서 시도해 보면 어떨까 싶었어요. 누가 들어와서 함께 대화할 수 있을지 궁금하기도 하고요. 오늘 강아지 훈련에서 '동의'에 대해 이야기해 보려고 해요. 동의에는 두 가지 측면이 있습니다. 사실 모든 것에는 양면이 있죠. 하지만 '동의'라는 개념을 들으면 어떤 분들은 곧바로 무정부 상태를 떠올리시곤 합니다. 만약 우리가 강아지에게 무엇을 하고 싶은지 물어본다면, 강아지들은 하루 종일 난로 옆에서 간식이나 먹으며 아무것도 안 하려 할 것이라고 생각하는 거죠. 동의의 다른 한쪽 측면은 다소 혼란스러울 수 있는데, 바로 간식으로 강아지의 의사를 가려버리는 경우입니다. 저는 강아지가 좋아하지 않는 일, 이를테면 발톱 손질 같은 것을 클래식 컨디셔닝을 통해 결국 그것을 좋아하게끔 만들어서 스스로 참여 여부를 결정할 수 있게 하는 방식에는 찬성합니다. 그러니 동의가 무엇인지, 제 강아지들과 저에게 동의란 어떤 모습인지 이야기해 보죠. 스포츠 분야에서의 동의와, 그것이 왜 사람들을 곤란하게 만드는지, 실제로는 어떤 모습인지도 이야기해 볼게요. 제가 보기에 가장 확실한 예는 건강 관리예요. 저기 있는 스웨거는 하루에 두 번 안약을 넣어야 하거든요. 우리는 모든 강아지에게 턱 대기(chin hold) 훈련을 시켰어요. 그런데 턱 대기는 무릎에 대는 방식이에요. 의자에 앉아서 턱을 무릎에 대고 있는 동안에는 제가 안약을 넣을 권리가 있다는 것이죠. 만약 턱을 무릎에서 떼면 '아직은 아니에요, 아직은 불편해요'라고 말하는 셈입니다. 그렇게 계속하다 보면 강아지들도 이게 별일 아니라는 걸 깨닫고 순순히 하게 되죠. 발톱 손질도 마찬가지입니다. 오늘 날씨가 아주 춥고 눈이 얼어붙어서 제가 바닥을 보고 걷느라 여러분을 제대로 못 보고 있네요. 장갑을 끼고 휴대폰을 들고 있어서 좀 힘든데, 조금 춥거든요. 아무튼 발톱 손질에 관해서 저는 먼저 반려견들에게 이완 프로토콜(relaxation protocol)을 가르칩니다. 어떤 식인지 말씀드릴게요. 그리고 제가 말하려는 핵심은... 그들이 옆으로 누워 있는 것 등등, 제 생각에는 'I shaped my dog' 팟캐스트 에피소드인 것 같아요, 잘 모르겠지만요. 아마 197화일 텐데, 거기서 제가 모든 개들이 갖춰야 한다고 생각하는 이완 프로토콜을 어떻게 조건화했는지 정확히 공유했어요. 그냥 편안히 쉬는 능력 말이에요. 미안하지만 좀 비켜줄래요? 이건 제가 생각하기에 기본 행동이에요. 모든 것에 대한 기본 행동이죠. 녀석은 그냥 바닥에 누워서 머리를 대고 옆으로 완전히 펴서 누워요. 정말 웃기기도 하죠. 음, 그래서 만약 제가 발톱을 깎으려는데 녀석이 고개를 들고 '어이, 뒤에서 뭐 하는 거야?'라고 한다면 녀석들은 아직 편안하지 않다는 뜻이에요. 우리는 그걸 셰이핑(행동 형성)하죠. 그리고 솔직히 음, 쿠키에 대한 사랑이 그걸 형성하는 데 도움이 되긴 해요. 하지만 처음에는 발톱 다듬기를
I am walking the dogs and normally I do this on live on Facebook but since Facebook deletes lives after 30 days I thought I'd try to do it here on YouTube and see who's out there who would like to join and talk and I thought we need to talk about consent in dog training because there's two sides of consent there's two sides of everything but I know the idea of consent people some people go immediately to anarchy that if we ask the dog what they'd like to do they would just like to eat bonbons by the fire all day and not do anything else and the other side of consent I think that gets a little bit muddied is when you mask the dog's opinion and they with cookies and I'm in favor of of classically conditioning something a dog doesn't like like having their nails done until they get to the point where they do like it and they can opt in or opt out so let's talk about consent and what that looks like for me and my dogs and we'll talk about consent in sports as well and how I think it gets some people into trouble what that looks like okay so I think one of the most obvious examples for me is husbandry so swagger right there he gets um eye drops twice a day and so we have trained him and all the dogs to put a chin hold but the chin hold is on our knee so we're sitting in a chair and that chin hold as long as your your chin is on my knee I have the right to give you an eye drop and if the chin comes off the knee you're telling me not yet I'm not comfortable with this just yet and so you get to the point where they I mean they figure out it's it's not a big deal and they'll do it so with my dogs with nail trimming it's very icy and and crusty snow here today so that's why I'm looking down and not really looking at all of you um so and I'm trying to hold the phone with mittens because it's a little chilly so with um nail trimming I first teach my dogs a relaxation protocol where they're lying on their sides and all of that I think it's I I shaped my dog podcast episode I don't know 197 maybe where I share exactly how I conditioned the relaxation protocol which I think all dogs should have the the the ability to just relax it's can you move along thank you it's uh this is I think default behavior for everything she just lies on the ground puts her head like lies flat out on her side it's kind of hysterical actually um so if I was cutting a nails and their head comes up like hey what are you doing back there they're saying okay I'm not comfortable just yet and we shape that and and honestly um their love for cookies helps to shape that but at first we move very very slowly with

아주 아주 천천히 진행하고, 항상 고개를 들 수 있는 권리를 줍니다. 만약 고개를 계속 들고 있다면 저는 '알겠어, 침대에서 내려와. 이거 하기 싫으면 괜찮아, 나중에 하자'라고 말해요. 그러고 나서 다른 개를 데려오고, 첫 번째 개가 다시 돌아와서 재평가받을 기회를 주죠. 만약 제 개가 두 번 연속으로 싫다고 하면 뭔가 문제가 있다는 걸 알아요. 아마 특히 그 행동이 처음이라면 말이죠. 음, 우리는 그걸 아주 천천히 진행해서 결국 녀석들이 그것을 좋아하게 만들어요. 그 모든 것이 저희 프로그램인 '당신의 반려견 페디큐어(Your Dog's Pedicure)'에 자세히 나와 있어요. 거기서 개가 '저 발톱 좀 깎아주실래요?'라고 말하죠. 자, 이제 스포츠에서의 동의에 대해 이야기해 봅시다. 도그 어질리티에서 저는 제 개들에게 라인을 보라고 가르쳐요. 라인을 보라고요. 그래서 점프에 집중할 때 녀석들은 저에게 '준비됐을 뿐만 아니라' 가고 싶다'는 신호를 보내는 거예요. 그런데 제가 출발 신호를 줬을 때 링 밖의 다른 사람에게 가버린다면, 스코틀랜드에서 온 하이인가요? 오, 피스켈리(Fiskelly)군요, 안녕하세요. 링을 떠나서 다른 사람에게 가버리는 것은 도그 어질리티를 하는 대신 다른 사람을 보러 가는 건데, 이건 제가 그 게임에 충분한 가치를 심어주지 못했다는 뜻이고 개는 저에게 그걸 말해주는 거예요. 개들은 링을 떠나거나 주위를 맴돌거나, 갑자기 미친 듯이 뛰어다니거나 아니면 그냥 행동을 멈추는 등 여러 가지 방식으로 제게 의사를 표현합니다. 실제로 올해 디지와 세계 선수권 대회에 나가기 한 달 전쯤이었는데요. 아이가 갑자기 속도를 늦추고 다른 할 일을 찾기 시작하길래 제가 '그래, 링 밖으로 나가자'라고 말했습니다. 다시 들어가지 않았고, 알고 보니 건강상의 문제였어요. 그래서 그 문제를 해결해 줬더니, 세계 선수권 대회에서는 정말 미친 듯이 달렸어요. 링에 들어가려고 비명을 지르며 짖어대더군요. 링에 들어가려고 비명을 지르며 짖는다는 건 정말로 하고 싶다는 뜻이니까요. 때로는 반려견에게 선택권을 주는 것이 반려견이 주인의 삶을 좌지우지하게 만드는 것이라고 생각하는 사람들도 있지만, 이건 의도를 가지고 만들어야 하는 소통 시스템입니다. 그래서 우리는 반려견에게 주도권을 주는 것이고요. 그게 우리가 다시는 그 일을 하지 않겠다는 뜻은 아닙니다. 반려견이 '이걸 할 만큼 충분히 준비되지 않았어'라고 말하는 것이죠. 제 말은, 저는 반려견들과 그런 소통 체계를 갖추는 게 좋다는 거예요. 그로 인해 생기는 신뢰 수준도 마음에 들고요. 그리고 모든 일에 예외는 없습니다. 예를 들어 테이터 샐러드처럼요. '동의를 무시할 수도 있다'는 점을 알려드릴게요. 킴의 집에 있는 테이터 샐러드는, 이제 거의 킴의 집에서 살다시피 해요. 함께 살던 반려견이 죽은 후부터는 남편분과 함께 지내는 개가 없었거든요. 그래서 테이터 샐러드가 왔다 갔다 하다가 지금은 거의 그곳에 머물고 있는데, 산책 가고 싶은 사람? 하고 물으면 모든 개가 문으로 달려가지만
nail trimming and they they always have the right to put up their head and if their head stays up then I I say all right get off the bed if you don't want to do this that's fine we'll do it later and then I'll bring up another dog and then the first dog can come back and have a re-evaluation if my dog says no two times in a row I know there's something wrong so maybe especially if they're new to the behavior um like we just go so slowly with it that they end up loving it um all of that is detailed in our program uh your dog's pedicure please where the dog says hey can I have my nails trimmed um so let's talk consent in sports now so in dog agility I teach my dogs to look at their line look at the line um so when you focus on the jump you're telling me not only you're ready to go but you want to go and if when I release you you then go visit another person outside of the ring you're telling me there's not hi from Scotland oh it's Fiskelly hello you're telling me by leaving the ring to visit somebody instead of do a dog agility I haven't built enough value for the game and the dog can tell me that and they'll tell me in many different ways leaving the ring or circling getting the zoomies or just slowing down like actually it was a month before I went to world championships with thisie this year that she just started slowing down and looking for other things to do and I said okay we're leaving the ring and we didn't go back in and um it was a health issue so fix that and she was running like a like running like a maniac at worlds she was screaming and barking to get into the ring screaming and the barking to get into the ring tells me that you really want to do it so though that sometimes people think giving the dog the opportunity to opt in means the dog rules your life and it's got to be created it's a communication system that needs to be created um with intention so that we give the dog agency and that doesn't mean we don't ever go back to that it means the dog is saying you haven't prepared me enough for this so I mean I just like having that system of communication with my dogs and I like the level of trust it creates with them as well so um and it's there's no in everything you do like tater salad and I'll give you an override of consent tater salad who is at kim's really lives at kim's house most of the time now since her dog that was living with her husband passed away he had no dog so tater salad would go back and forth and now is just more or less there a lot but tater salad if you said who wants to go for a walk all the dogs fly to the door

테이터 샐러드는 그렇지 않아요. 특히 겨울에는 더 그렇고, 여름에는 조금 다를 수도 있겠지만요. 하지만 이 아이가 항상 산책을 갈 수 있는 건 아니죠. 그리고 항상 산책을 가지도 않을 겁니다. 그렇게 끝까지 산책을 가지는 않을 거예요. 테이터 샐러드는 항상 산책을 나가지도 않고, 매번 나가지도 않을 거니까요. 리드줄을 매고 뒤뜰을 지나 들판을 돌아 걸어가게끔 했습니다 그러면 열에 아홉은 달려 나가서 구르고 신나게 뛰어놀곤 하죠 만약 운 좋게 녀석이 싫다고 해서 집으로 돌아간다면 그렇게 하도록 둡니다 무엇이 문제인지 누가 알겠어요 녀석은 눈이 이마 앞쪽으로 툭 튀어나와 있어서 어쩌면 바람 때문일 수도 있고 누가 알겠어요 일단 걷기 시작하면 산책을 아주 좋아하지만 산책을 나간다는 생각 자체를 싫어하는 것 같아요 음 스포티파이, 유튜브, 웹사이트 외에 다른 소셜 미디어도 운영하시나요 네 있습니다 음 페이스북 페이지는 '수잔 가렛 도그 어질리티'인 것으로 알고 있는데 음 그게 URL로 보면 그렇게 나오지만 아마 '수잔 가렛츠 도그스'로 나올 거예요 인스타그램도 '수잔 가렛츠 도그스'이고 음 소셜 미디어 페이지는 그게 전부예요 음 그래서 이런 말을 정말 많이 했던 것 같은데 우리가 개 훈련에 대해 아는 것은 음 이런 방식으로 강화와 훈련 과정에서 개들이 주도적인 역할을 한다는 생각은 아마도 빙산의 일각일지도 모르겠네요 제가 빙산 이야기를 하는 이유가 바로 그 빙산의 일각 때문일지도요 이 길은 안 되겠다 너무 어려워 눈이 너무 깊게 쌓였어 이쪽으로 오렴 이봐 친구 우린 이쪽으로 가자 제가 이 생각에서 정말 좋아하는 점은 점점 더 많은 젊은이들이 자신이 현재 하고 있는 방식과 강아지에 대해 알고 있는 지식을 어떻게 하면 더 '핸즈 오프(hands off)' 방식으로 바꿀 수 있을지 고민하고 있다는 것입니다 저는 '핸즈 오프'라는 단어를 쓰는 걸 정말 싫어하는데 왜냐하면 저는 제 개들과 신체 접촉하는 걸 정말 좋아하고 거칠게 놀기도 하거든요 제가 말하는 핸즈 오프란 음 개들이 우리가 원하는 것을 할 수 있도록 '동의(consent)'를 활용한다는 의미입니다 음, 알겠어요. 여러분 혹시 그 점에 대해 질문 있나요? 들판을 가로질러 걷는 데 이렇게 오래 걸릴 줄은 몰랐네요. 눈이 이렇게 엉망일 때는 스웨거와 한 바퀴만 도는 게 좋을 것 같아요. 제 생각에는 그냥 그게... 우리 모두에게 고려해 볼 만한 좋은 일이라고 생각해요. 분명히요. 그건
except tater salad especially in the winter in the summer maybe not so much but he's not going to be able to go for a walk all the time and he's not going to go for a walk all the way to the dog and he's not going to go for a walk all the time and he's not going to go for a walk and we would put his leash on and get him walking I don't know just past the backyard as we go around the field and nine times out of ten he just takes off flying and rolling and having a good old time if by chance he says no thank you and he goes back to the house that he is allowed because who knows what it is that is the problem like his eyes sit out on the front of his forehead so maybe it's the wind like who knows because I know once he gets walking he loves the walk he just hates the idea of the walk um do you have any other social media other than spotify youtube and your website yes we have um our facebook page is susan garrett dog agility i believe um but the it shows up like that's the url for it but i think it shows up as susan garrett's dogs that instagram is susan garrett's dogs that um so those are their social media pages um so like i think i've said this so many times what we know about training dogs um this way with reinforcement and the idea of them having a part of the training i think it's like maybe it's winter tip of the iceberg maybe that's why i'm referencing icebergs it's the tip of the iceberg maybe we won't go this way this way this will be too hard for you the snow's too deep come on buddy we'll go this way and what i love about the this idea is that there are more and more young people that are throwing themselves into the thought process of how can i change what i currently do and what i currently know with my dog to be more um hands off and when i i hate to use that word hands off um um because i i love touching my dogs we play very rough and smack them around and when i mean hands off i mean that we are using um consent to help them um do what it is we would like um okay you guys have any questions about that i can't believe how long it's taking to walk the field when the snow is this nasty i probably will only do one round with swagger i just think that it's a good thing for all of us to be considering obviously it's
