And also today is supposed to be about just general pet ownership dog training, which is a great foundation to any dog sport, but leave a comment and let me know if you are interested in doing dog sports. It's very unfair. So he's like, I need to be out there. Why are we talking? And I got to tell you, I'll be honest that today's topic was inspired by, there's been many, many groups of people coming and working their dogs in here. And I feel like they're making it harder for themselves because they're missing so many key foundational pieces. And so we're going to help them as a group. And I'm going to share what I think is important as a foundation, what I teach when as my dogs grow, grow along, grow up, grow along. I'm not sure what word I'm looking for here. So let me see. Let me see if you're doing dog sports. I have another question for you too. I'm going to just look here and get my question ready. All right. But first I want to see a bit of fly ball, started agility, starting agility for the first time, past agility, a little bit of fly ball, fly ball, doing agility, one with a mock, one working on a POC. And a 14 month old, I don't know what agonist starting it means. Maybe it's a typo. I'm not sure. Because if there's enough interest in dog sport, we'll talk a little bit about how to morph from a great foundation in dog sport. And I know my friend, Linda Orton Hill, who many of you know, she's been a long time coach in all of our programs. She was saying, you know, I can't tell you how many times I defend you to people because they see profit, who is a 16 month old puppy. Oh, 17. He turned 17 months, two days ago. And they, and they, they, they assume you, you've started doing all this crazy, fancy, sexy training as a wee puppy because he's so good already. And she keeps defending saying, no, that's not what she's doing. That's not what she does. People don't understand the brilliance that can grow out of foundation, out of putting your, a lot of you doing agility. So maybe we will do a little bit, talking a little bit about foundation. Okay. So I have a question for you here. What do you think when you're raising a new puppy or a rescue dog? We've got a new rescue dog here. We're going to

maybe do some demos with later. What do you feel are important foundation skills? So I'm going to write these down as you, as you go along and mention them here. What does that look like in your eyes? Okay. Rough sport. This is some great answers. Taking food, playing with toys, tugging, crate, crate games. It's your choice. So tugging, taking food. Training with the humans not to be anxious and confident around other dogs. Oh, bingo, Karen. Retrieve. Makes your life a lot easier when you've got a great retrieve. Cassandra, first time taking your classes, but I feel like my agility teachers use your philosophy, for which I'm so grateful. That's awesome, Cassandra. Value for me. Can you maybe go past it? If she can move. Yeah. They're in the kitchen. Impulse control. Impulse control. So I want you guys to keep writing these in. I'm going to share with you focus forward. So focus where you want it. So there's a dog downstairs barking. We have a foster dog here who's been with us for about three weeks. And here's the dog downstairs barking. And it's a little bit of chaos here. I've got one puppy being really good over here, but he's a little bit more experienced. So, so, you know, and we're Catherine, I love that you said this recall when distracted. Oh my God. So, so very important. Balance between play and work. These are so good cookies for profit. Okay. If you insist you're fetty. That's from Mary. Oh, that's another really, really good one. Get your bed, please. That doesn't mean you can leave.

Loose leash walking. So I want to share with you last night. I'm going to tell tales at a school. I was observing a young dog workshop. All of the puppies were less than a year old. I think yesterday, the youngest would have been Linda's puppy. Maybe Linda's puppy, I think is seven months. Yes. There were two Linda's puppy. Linda's. So there's, I think there were two, seven month old puppies, two, 10 months. I don't even think Linda's puppy is seven months. I don't think so. So they were all under a year old. There wasn't any wee wee puppies. It was a, a, um, a foundation workshop for people who wanted to do dog agility. There was a 10 month old puppy there. And at the beginning, the instructor said, tell us, um, what you've done so far. What's, you know, what's been your focus. Now there was a somebody with a 10 month old puppy. I'm not going to share with you the breed or anything, but it was a traditional, um, one of the traditional breeds you would think of for agility. And, and they said, um, we've got the seesaw trained, running contacts are trained. Weed pulls are trained. And I'm like, wow, 10 month old puppy. They shouldn't be doing any of those things. And lo and behold, it was a three hour workshop here. That puppy could not do a tug, a sit, a hand target. If any other dog was moving, not any of it, couldn't do any of it. What good is having a seesaw in a dog walk and we pulls if your dog can't focus under distraction? All of the sexy bits and, and, and I don't blame the person. I blame the people instructing this person. Guys do better for your students. And I, and I sound a little bit cranky because I felt so bad for this person. And mostly I felt bad for the dog because do you know what happens to those dogs? They get told, Hey, knock it off. Hey, Hey, Hey, watch me focus. Hey, it's unfair. And it's unnecessary. It's just unnecessary. My puppies for my, my puppies that I raised to be agility dogs are raised in the first year, almost identical to any puppy I would have that. I just wanted to have it be an amazing family pet. All right. Before. Yes. Uh, uh, Lisa reminds me, um, I did mention that I'm going to give away a tug toy today. So I'm going to pause right now and say, share this live because this, I think is going to be such a critical life for everybody who owns a dog. Everybody who owns a dog should watch this live. So it's foundation training. I think the biggest problem with foundation training is people think it's boring. They don't. I absolutely love the little nuances of things that we can do with our puppies or our, our, uh, is he officially a rescue dog or is he still a foster dog? Kim said, what do you think? Yeah. We're thinking we're calling him a rescue dog now. Kim said, what do you think? Yeah. So many of you put recall and I think it was, uh, Catherine who said recall under distraction. Now there were a couple other puppies at this workshop that had some great agility type skills, but at the end one, they, they got loose and the owners couldn't get them back. Um, seven months old. You should have a pretty good recall. But the problem is there's too much old school traditional dog training. And what do you think old school traditional dot Robin Robin's happy. She said, yay. Kim. Um, uh, uh, this is a big question, but I know somebody's gonna get the answer to this. What do you think traditional old school type dog training lacks that the way I train has in plenty? Not cookies, not tugs. I know it's a really big question. Do you even know the answer to that? You aren't listening. That's okay. What do you think old school type dog training lacks? So that's a great answer. Claire said joy. Yep. Kindness is a, so we don't even have to go empathy, compassion. We don't even have to go. What do you think you're local? Oh, Dana. Touchdown. Touch. Or dude, I don't know if you're, Dana could be a guy or a girl. It's fine. Choice. When you, any, like the vast majority of people teaching dog training, remove choice from a dog. They remove choice. And honestly, the dogs, you're delaying the learning and you're making classes so freaking boring. So freaking boring for that dog. You're removing choice so that the dog can choose and they're choosing on their own. We're not prompting them. We're not going, pick that one, pick that one. No, no, we create what they call, what we call, if you listen to my podcast, antecedent arrangements,

a little bit of science, but it's important. Everybody understands that antecedent arrangements means the environmental conditions that you've created that makes what you want clear to the dog, but they still have a choice not to do it. They still have a choice not to do it. So let me, um, get an example. I'm going to get the puppy out and, uh, he's had very little training. How long have you had him? Three weeks. And so close to four weeks and Kim and I have been gone for two of those four weeks. So he hasn't had a lot of training. I'm just going to get them out and I'm going to show you what giving a dog choice looks like. What does that look like? And why? And I want you to think about why, why do you care about that anyway? Okay. So I'm going to get the puppy out. He, I don't even know if he'll tug on the toy. So I got, Oh, where's this other toy. Um, I got so many for my moral toys. I'll try both of these. Okay. Mr. Mr. But miss, miss, miss, miss. Mr. Waffles. And waffles is some sort of, I wish you could see these creatures. Let me just see if you can, uh, you can tip this down. There. Yeah, you can see it. So waffles is unknown heritage. He came from American bully rescue. So we're guessing there's some sort of bully in there somewhere. Um, so let's see how he does. I don't know if you like this toy. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Frank! Look at you! He had the choice to come out. Did you see that? That was his first voice. Look at him. Can you turn the camera up, Kim, so that people can see what we're doing here? Now, first choice I would like, I'd like him to get on that bed, but I'm not going to tell him to get on that bed. I'm not going to force him to get on that bed. Good boy. Nice. Great. Yeah. I'm going to go over here to this hip. I'm just going to stand nearby. Yay! Can you get me a perch? Right there on the edges of my table. This? Yay! Thank you. So this is your father. Let's see if he can... Let's see. You guys are going to pick up. Good boy. Search. Nice. Good boy! Yay! Search! Yay! Are we going up? More than we could eat. This is not going up with his big feet. Look at the size of those feet. Search. Oh, I threw that in a little bit. So no, he doesn't have done much, really much training at all with him. A little bit. I did a little bit. Kim did a little bit. I threw that in a little bit. I threw that in a little bit. Yeah, that perch is too small for him. Boop. Search. I think I used the bigger one. Yay! There it goes.

Take this off. Let's see if you can. You'll be able to see this. Because he's ready. Kimball! Yay! That's what it's for. That's what it's for. Baby. Okay. So that is Waffles. Waffleina, as I like to call him. Waffles is... What did we think? That's 16 weeks old? That looks like 17 weeks old. That looks like 17 weeks old. And he came to us when he was 13 weeks. So there's... You saw a few little behaviors. Get on a bed. Get in a kennel. Get on a perch. Tug with the toy. All of that giving the puppy choice. Choice. Right? He has the option to say, I'm going to sniff the ground. I'm going to sniff the ground. So how do we get there? We get there in layers. It's layers that we create that the dog wants to do what it is we want to do. So here's a quick glimpse of boom. There's a bunch of different layers. We put that. That's how we approach training. And if you've listened to my podcast, I know you've heard me talk about the 5C pyramid, where... Oh, Dana, I love your comment, but we got to get rid of you for now. The 5C pyramid, where we create connection. That's the first layer that we do. And then the connection could be engagement. So did Waffles ever look to go and visit? Profit is laying right here in the bed. Did he ever go to look at Profit and go, he loves playing with Profit. We could turn them loose here. And there'd be like a full on puppy party. He didn't look at them, did he? Because of the connection we've established in training. So the 5C pyramid is connection, clarity, confidence, challenge. What happened last night was that young, 10 month old puppy was thrown into challenge. There was no connection with him and his owner. None. There was no clarity of how to be correct. That the confidence that the puppy showed, well, there was no confidence shown. And so what happens when you don't train in a, in a intentionally layered program, the puppy doesn't have confidence. They don't have trust in you and they go and look for their own reinforcement in the world somewhere else. Okay. So, okay. So this is so critically important. So critically important. That, that relationship is started just by playing games. Now, of course we have homeschool the dog and recallers. Those are filled with games that if I could, and I, and I don't try to solicit to people who come here to come to somebody else's seminar. I would have said to that man, if you join recallers, you would have an agility dog that everything becomes easy. But when you have a lack of connection, the dog looks elsewhere. So the first thing that you, that I need you to do to get this connection is create value for the dog. What did waffles show value for?

Leave me a comment. What did he show value for? And leave it in the comments. Will I take a sip of my 5 PM coffee? Don't judge me. It's half decaf. So it's, it's practically water. What did prop or what did waffles show value for? He showed value for the crate for playing. Ah, Lin, boo. Treats. It's the first thing that we need dogs to have value for. Playing the tug toy. We didn't even know he had value for the tug toy. Honestly, we aren't training him for sport. And so we wanted him to learn how to play, but we didn't want him to be crazy because ideally profit is, or profit waffle is, is going to be, um, is going to be Kim's husband's dog. Interaction with me engagement with me. There's value, but this is how it starts value for food, value for things, the crate, the bed, the perch, but that creates value for me. You've got to grow things intentionally. So, because we need to start somewhere and, but we need those treats. Did that puppy try to jump up and grab the treats out of my hand? No, because choice is always number one. Choice is always number one. So somebody, as many of you mentioned at the beginning of today, it's your choice. It's your choice. It's your choice. I can put a bowl of food on the ground and my dogs and that puppy, they're not going to try and dive in there because they know that choice. If I dive in that, those cookies, let me back up a bit. This is another, such an important concept. And I really hope everyone gets this. When I'm training any dog, the rescue dog, my 16 month old puppy, my 10, my 14 year old dog, whenever I'm training to me, training is a conversation with a friend. And if I ask my agility dog to do something and for example, go to the backside of a jump and they cut in and take the front side. What do most people do? They then crowd the backside. So the dog can't make a mistake. They take away what? They take away the choice. If my agility dog, when I say go to the backside, they come to the front. That conversation with friends, I gave them a cue that said, go to the backside and their behavior of going to the front is a conversation that said, I know you asked me to go to the backside, but I was unclear. So I went to the front. I went to the front. If you look at all training as a conversation with a friend, you're not going to go, Hey, what are you doing? What did I say? All training is a conversation with a friend. You help to create value where you want it. Value in a bed, value in a crate, value for a puppy, not whining. You create value. And then you test that value by

saying, can I train, can I train you on the perch with another puppy here? You love playing with this puppy. It's a conversation. I didn't know if waffles would be able to work with profit right here. Profit who he plays with. Dog training should be a conversation with a friend, but unfortunately, old school dog training is follow a cookie, follow a cookie, follow a cookie. You should know it now. So you get a pop. If you don't do what I say, it doesn't have to be that way guys. It doesn't have to be that way. So if I look at profit, he loves chase. He's a border collie. He's crazed about chase. So I'm just going to throw a frizzor for him. And I just want to show you there's value for him. Now, the puppy might bark because Kim had to go. Kim will be back. So the puppy might bark. I apologize in advance. I'm going to turn the camera so you can see down the floor a little bit. Okay. Oh, Kim's back. Perfect. If you can go out. No, she's sitting in front of the bathroom. She just like a PSA because. Okay. Okay. All right. So Kim had a little emergency and we'll make this little PSA right now. Um, Kim's mom was looking after her dog Belief and she was so proud to say she knows that we feed our dogs fruits and vegetables. She said Belief and I shared a grape this afternoon, a bowl, a bowl. Yeah. So, um, grapes are toxic to dogs. And so, um, she said she might've given her eight. Did you see she say? She's not sure she just six, eight. And so we called our vet and our vet said you have to make her throw up. That's because you don't know. Right. So when it's unknown, we got to make the dog throw up. So that's how Kim had to exit to go and make her dog throw up. Um, and her mom feels very, very bad about it. However, a little PSA in the middle of our lie. And grits. And yes, they have both grates and raisins. Toxic to dogs. Okay. Back to our regular schedule. Where's the value? So you might get ready with cookies cause I'm going to throw a frizzer and he's going to chase and we want to try and help that puppy to be quiet by when he makes good choices that not barking and carrying on Kim's going to throw cookies. Let me just show you what we got here guys. I'm going to, I'm going to throw a frizzer for profit. So we have got an old crate and cut a whole in the back so that we can just toss cookies back there for the puppy. There's a snuggle mat in the crate. So when you put some cookies in there, it'll take them a second or two to find them. These are all little tips and tricks to help, um, success because I want my dogs to be quiet when

they're seeing another dog work. Profit, right? Okay. So Profit loves the frizzer. Thank you. So you can see there's a great value. This frizzer could be a squirt. He loves to chase squirters. All right. So this is just a puppy game that we will play. We call our game. Where the audio is choppy. Oh, the audio might be choppy because I'm away from the, I'll back up a little bit. This should make it easier. Okay. All right. So I've established there's value. So now I need when the midst of, maybe you see another dog at the park and you want to chase them, but there's a car coming. Thank you. Bye. Ready? Yay. Okay. Bring me. So that's what we want. Sure. Have fun. Sure. I wouldn't give my dog the freedom to chase the squirrel unless I knew, oh my God. I wouldn't give my puppy the freedom to chase another dog or to chase the squirrel unless I knew that when, oh my gosh, there's danger. I need you to sit. I need you to come back here. All right. So that's a little recolor game right there. It was kind of a slow habit. Yeah. Okay. So that my dog, my sixth, 17 month old puppy had the freedom to choose to ignore me when I asked him to sit and to just go get his frizzer. I just retrieved it five times. I'll just go get it and bring it back to you and then I'll sit. All right. How do you teach that sit with the frisbee going? It's layers of value layers that we teach in recallers. How do you teach that? How do you teach that? How do you teach that? How do you teach that? This is an agility, let's say this is an agility dog who you ask them to take a jump and there's a tunnel right after it and they go, oh, I'm going to go take that tunnel. No, I need you to turn. These are like the foundational layers of what we do. Give the dog choice, create value. This is how we get our dogs to respond. A border collie would much rather chase another dog than listen to me, people. And yeah, Dana, boom. You're on your bit, Dana. Dana said, well done. Well done, waffles, no barking. So good. How will this work down the line for a high prey dog on a squirrel? I have sighthones. Cassandra, border collies are pretty high prey. I get it. There is a judgment that border collies are all easy to train. He loves chasing squirrels. This is how we get them to come when we're, we're never going to get them. So what traditional training will do is bait the value of a cookie against a squirrel. Mommy's got a cookie. I got a squeaky. You better come up with the squirrel. It's not going to work, my friend. So what then people say,

you cannot train a recall without an electric collar. I'm sorry. I have never used an electric collar on a dog. I haven't used a long line on a dog, except for Tater Salad, the rescue dog for the first year he was here. I've never used a long line on my own dogs since 1993 was the last time I used a long line on a dog. I'm not saying that you shouldn't. I'm just saying if you put, if you do the strategic layers, it becomes so obvious to the dog what the best choice is. It becomes so obvious. So it could be, you know, like I said, training is a conversation. It's a conversation with a friend. So if I say to my friend, um, wait, I'm going to hear, if I say to my friend, I would love to dremel your nails. Would you love to have your nails dremeled? 99, maybe 99.9 dogs and puppies out of a hundred are going to say, no, thank you. What dog innately is going to love their nails being grinded off? No one knows them, but we put in layers, layers so that they have the choice. So I'm just going to give you a little example of that. Um, and Kim can do a little example with, um, the puppy as well. So let me just move this in. Bring this down a little bit. Okay. So, let me go through. So, my, the conversation I'll have with my puppy is, do you want your nails cut? Ready? So you just walked over a bowl of cookies, just step over. Now, I will say, do you want your nails cut? And if you do, I'm going to say, can you pop? If he puts his head on the ground, he's saying, yes, you can pick up the dremel. If I turn the dremel on and he keeps his head down, he's saying, yes, you can pick up my paw. If he keeps his head on the ground still, he says, yes, you can pick up my nails. If he wants to lift his head off the ground or pull his paw away, he would be saying, no, I don't feel comfortable going in, going in, going in, so please don't do this anymore. Somebody told me it's a known fact that the brain quarter callings are more sensitive to having their nails cut from black and white. Everything we do, we give them choice. We give them the choice. Where's my camera? He's like, I'm just going to stay here because maybe we'll get more done. We'll get more. everything that we do with our dogs, they're given the choice to say yes, or I don't feel comfortable with this. And I respect that they have that choice and I'll say, okay, it's up to me to make you more comfortable. What can I do to make you more comfortable? All right. So relationship, relationship, relationship, we don't demand it, but when we build that connection and we work on things that we do in Homeschool the Dog and Recallers,

when we build up that connection, we get to a place where loose leash walking isn't a problem, where if I was going to do agility, I want my dogs to run beside me until I send them to go ahead. But again, so many people just focus on agility, not the foundation. Can we cover treatless learning? Why do we want to do treatless learning? A dog has to eat. All dogs have to eat. And so why do we want to use... Now, I could walk five miles. I mean, I walk my dogs three kilometers a day, ask them to do different things. And I don't give them treats when they're out on a walk, but we morph the treats into activities become reinforcing. So if I was to take my puppy, again, he's 16 months, 17, I keep calling him 16 months old. He's 17 months old. So if I was to take him... My audio is going to break up here because I'm going to get further away from the camera. Pardon me? Thank you. No, I think it has to do with it's a, it's a air pod. So I will turn it to the Mac speaker. That might be a little bit better. So if I was running agility... Is there a camera? Oh, it's not. Yeah, you can't see. Yeah, you can't see it, but it is on. Boom. Okay. So I need my dog to be at my side when I run agility. If I want to turn, he needs to turn. If I'm okay, he needs to go tight. If he needs to change sides, he should change sides. If I turn my head away, he shouldn't come across my path because then he'll trip me. And if I bend to the side, turn around, turn around. So as soon as I give him a cue to do something, he says, okay, I'm going to leave your side. I'm going to go do something. That's how you get a dog to be brilliant at agility. Kim was busy writing notes and didn't take the time to train your own puppy. True story. My point is I look at the trajectory of those puppies that were at this workshop last night. And I say, they have a lot of agility skills, but profit at that age didn't have the agility skills that their dogs do. But there comes a point when profits agility skills will never be reached by those dogs because he's got such a great foundation of all the other important things. And do you think that running with my dog at my side, do you think that's going to hurt or help my loose leash walking? Of course, it's just value for being hanging out with me. Of course, that's going to be awesome. What would I have done if profit had chosen to ignore my sit command? I would have said, Susan,

what the heck are you thinking? Why would you throw a Frisbee repeatedly getting him in the chase mode and then ask him to sit on live television? What if people think you can't train dogs? I would have never asked my dog to do something that I wasn't 100% confident that they could do because it's a conversation with a friend. I wouldn't say to Kim, Kim, can you go play, please change the transmission to my car? Because I don't know that she would do a good job at that. It's a conversation with a friend. I know this might seem a little bit pie in the sky, but I've been training dogs this exact same way since 1994. The nuances have changed, but the principles have not. In 1994, I started to say, what if I didn't correct my dogs? What if I didn't say, no, you're bad? What if I said, how can I be better for you so that you don't make these mistakes? If the world would look at their dog and say, how could I be better for you? What do you need from me? Do you know how you can all be better for your dogs? Get better yourself. Our dogs are limited by our own education. So I am constantly hungry to learn more about the science of dog training. It's all in our programs. It's all in Recallers and Handling 360 and Agility Nation. It's all there. It's all there. So the entire world could have this. Well, maybe those that make a decision, either I have to feed my family or I have to join one of your programs. But for many of you, I have to do away with my macalata, matcha, caca, mocha, latte. To learn what we do is just a choice of making your dog. And I think it's a reflection of how much I love my dogs, that I'm going to do everything I can to make things clear for them. I'm going to do everything I can to learn more. Okay? So, and guess what? What day is it today? So right now, until tomorrow night at midnight, all of our programs are on for our cyber event. make it more complicated because what they do is they take the 5C, I got to move that. Hold on. They take the 5C pyramid and they don't worry about connection. Oh yeah, I got cookies. My dog will follow me. They don't worry on how clear I am because they don't think it's a conversation. It's, I'm going to teach you. I taught you. It didn't matter that you used a lure to teach. There was no understanding that happened. So the confidence can't grow. And then you just throw the dog in the deep end of the challenges and go, well, you should know this. I taught you. I taught you. It really is that simple. Honestly, I really wish everybody could see that if you give choice in all you do in your training, that you will create brilliance in your dog. We have students that come on board with 10 year olds and teenage dogs, as long as they're physically healthy, they're not in pain. We can change things that whoever came up with that dumb expression. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. I have no idea who they were talking about, but they weren't talking about the four-legged dogs in our lives because dogs of any age can learn. And we encourage you. A dog that's got imposed control, you, I'm going to collar correct you. I'm going to put my electric collar on you. I'm going to, you must do what I say because I am the ruler. Have I put my dog in a situation where they're not ready for that yet? I'm going to back off because I think my dog's feeling more pressure than they should be.

And eventually your dog is going to be taking on more and more environments. And so it's just a matter of reading your dog. You're going to be able to go more places. Your dog's going to continue to make great, great choices. For example, when we got waffles, he had horrible separation anxiety, horrible. Yeah. Attack very, and as separation anxiety often does, he could be in a room with people and he would still lose his, you know what, if Kim left the room, he would have literally crawled up a wall screaming given that option. So before we could start working on connection and choice and game, we had to deal with the separation anxiety that he came with. And it was a process. So the dog dictates the pace of the training based on that joy and the confidence and the clarity that they're showing you and what, okay, I got this. Let's move on.
