Shaped by Dog에 오신 것을 환영합니다. 반려견의 모든 끼니를 무조건 밥그릇으로 줘야 한다고 말하려는 건 아닙니다. 하지만 반려견 식사의 적어도 일부분은 밥그릇으로 급여하는 것이 결코 나쁜 일은 아니라고 말씀드리고 싶습니다. 그리고 사실 그렇게 하는 것은 아주, 아주 좋은 방법이기도 하죠. 자, 그럼 여러분이 반려견에게 사료를 주는 여러 가지 방식과 제가 왜 밥그릇으로 급여하라고 말하며 제 스스로와 모순되는 주장을 하는 것 같은지 알아봅시다. 푸드 퍼즐이나 토플(Topple)을 이용하거나, 수건에 사료를 말아주는 '퍼피 밤(puppy bombs)' 같은 방식으로 급여할 수도 있습니다. 마당에 사료를 뿌려주며 급여할 수도 있죠. 이런 모든 방식은 반려견이 먹을 때 코와 입, 그리고 몸을 사용하게 만드는데, 이건 나쁜 게 아닙니다. 저도 찬성하는 방식이죠. 물론 보호자님의 계획이 좀 필요하긴 하지만, 그럼에도 저는 여전히 반려견이 밥그릇으로 먹는 법도 배워야 한다고 생각합니다. 그러니까 이런 방법들이 나쁘다는 게 아닙니다. 저도 이런 방식을 좋아하지만, 반려견에게 사료를 주는 다른 방법들도 있으니까요. 어떤 분들은 반려견에게 다양한 음식을 선택해서 주는 샤퀴테리 보드 방식을 좋아하시기도 합니다. 저는 이게 노령견이나, 혹은 뭐랄까, 위 상태가 좋지 않아서 날마다 먹고 싶은 음식이 다를 수 있는 반려견들에게는 정말 훌륭한 방법이라고 생각합니다. 저도 나이 든 반려견들에게 그렇게 해본 적이 있습니다. 릭 매트(lick mat)도 있죠. 테이터 샐러드는 이제 거의 대부분의 식사를 릭 매트로 해결합니다. 단두종이라 그게 훨씬 먹기 편하거든요. 릭 매트로 먹으면 식사 시간이 30분이나 걸리는데, 예전에는 30초도 안 걸렸거든요. 그리고 다 먹고 나면 그는, ... 그냥 가구를 핥게 하세요. 저는 릭 매트(lick mat)를 아주 좋아합니다. 그리고 모든 사람이 여러분에게 시키려고 하는 가장 중요한 것은 강아지의 모든 식사를 손으로 직접 주는 것입니다. 저는 반려견 훈련사입니다. 저는 강화 기반의 반려견 훈련사예요. 그런데 저는 여러분께 그렇게 하지 말라고 말씀드리고 싶네요. 여러분은 아마 이렇게 말하겠죠. 수잔, 당신이 '러프 러브(Rough Love)'라는 책을 썼고, 그 책에서 모든 식사는 손으로 줘야 한다고 했잖아요. 음, 제가 몇 가지 드릴 말씀이 있습니다. 첫째, 저는 이 책을 2000년과 2001년에 썼고, 출판은 2002년쯤 되었을 겁니다. 그래서 지난 21년 동안 제 삶에는 많은 변화가 있었습니다. 둘째, 그 책은 보호자와의 관계에 문제가 있는 반려견들을 위해 특별히 쓰였습니다. 그래서 반려견에게 모든 식사를 손으로 주는 것은 일정 기간 동안만
Dog training like everything is filled with fads and it seems there's a fad upon us that I think could get people into trouble. And I'd like to talk about that today. And that is everybody telling you to not feed your dog from a ball. Yeah. I'm going to be that girl. Let's go. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. And I'm not going to say every meal your dog gets should come from a bowl, but I am going to say it's never a bad thing that at least part of your dog's meal comes from a bowl. And I think it's a really, really good thing to do as well. So, let's jump into some of the ways you might be feeding your dog and why I could be contradicting myself on this one when I tell you feed from a bowl. So, you could feed your dog with food puzzles or a topple or maybe rolling food up in a towel, puppy bombs. You could feed them by scattering food in the yard. So, all of those things get the dog to use their nose, their mouth, and their body when they're eating, which that isn't a bad thing. I'm on board for that. It does take some planning on your part, but even then I still think the dog should learn to eat from a bowl as well. So, I'm not saying those things are bad. I love those things, but there's other ways to feed your dog. You might feed your dog. Some people like to use a charcuterie board where you give your dog a selection of different foods. I think that is amazing for senior dogs or dogs who are, you know, maybe their stomach doesn't feel great and they might want to choose this thing over the other one day or another. I've done that with my older dogs. Lick mats. Tater salad gets the vast majority of his food from a lick mat now. Brachiocephalic, it's easier for him. It takes him 30 minutes to eat his meal from a lick mat, which it used to take him less than 30 seconds to eat his meal. And then he'd just lick the furniture. So, lick mats, I love those. And the number one thing that everybody is trying to get you to do is to feed all of your dog's meals from your hand. Now, I'm a dog trainer. I'm a reinforcement-based dog trainer. And I'm telling you not to do that. And you're going to say, remember Susan, you wrote that book Rough Love and you told us in that book Rough Love that all the meals should come from our hands. Oh, I got a couple of things to say. Number one, I wrote this book back in 2000 and 2001. It was published I think in 2002. So, a lot of things have changed in my life in the last 21 years. Number two, the book was written specifically for dogs that were having a relationship problem with their people. And so, it was meant for a period of time

to feed your dog all of their meals from your hands. Now, I'm not saying dogs shouldn't be fed from your hands. I think it's great. For me, I feed raw, so it's a little icky. I do use a spoon. It's an art I can share with you if you like. But I believe dogs should not be kept from their primary reinforcer because they have to earn it. I believe that dogs need that comfort and the security to know you're getting food from me. You don't have to be a good dog to get that. That's the commitment I made when I said, welcome to the family. So, it isn't dependent upon you doing anything the right way. And that's what's getting me a little upset is that people are saying, throw away the bowl. We're only going to feed your dog from your hand now. Yeah, no, no. Now, again, I said, I love all of those interactive ways that involve other parts of the dog when they're getting their meals through like an educational game or, you know, rolling out a mat or something like that. But I believe dogs need to learn to eat from a bowl. Whenever a dog is taking food on board, they may be learning something like in the educational game, but they're definitely being conditioned to something. So, they're being conditioned to loving your hands, which is why in Rough Love, I wanted people to feed their dogs from their hands. And so, you've got to be aware we want our dogs also to be conditioned to eat from a bowl. It's so important because there may be times when your dog is staying at a hospital. Maybe they need to eat their meals from a bowl there, or they're being boarded, or they're staying with a friend that they can't go to all the extensive things that you do. Or when they get older, or maybe you're just busy one day and you just have to feed your dog because you're going on a camping trip, a big adventure. You've got to feed your dog from the bowl. If the dog's been conditioned that all of their meals come from a topple, or a rolled up towel, or your hands as you train them, they may not eat from a bowl. Trust me, I've seen it happen. And so, I've always taken a portion of my puppy's food and let them eat it from a bowl. I want them to be happy to eat food from a bowl. Then I've also seen this only hand-feed dogs go very, very badly. So, I've seen one puppy that came in for a private lesson, and the puppy was frantic, like anxious about food. And I was getting bit really hard when I tried to give the puppy a food. And I think it was about 11 o'clock in the morning. And I said, when was this puppy last fed? And she said, well, last night when I trained. And I'm like, puppies need eating. And

이 강아지는 점점 불안해하고 있었는데, 이것도 제가 손으로만 먹여 키운 강아지들에게서 본 또 다른 현상입니다. 그들은 이런 불안감을 갖게 됩니다. 어떤 강아지들은 음식이 오직 주인이 충분히 잘했다고 판단할 때만 제공되기 때문에 자원을 지키려는(가딩) 성향을 보이기도 합니다. 확실히 개가 이런 상황에 처하면 불안함이 생깁니다. 음식을 얻기 위해 충분히 잘해야 한다는 것은 옳지 않다고 생각합니다. 우리는 우리 개들을 사랑하잖아요. 개들은 언제 밥을 먹게 될지 알아야 해요. 그리고 11시가 되면 우리는 가서 무언가를 배우게 될 텐데 그건 아주 멋진 일이 될 겁니다. 음식을 더 얻게 될 테니까요. 하지만 제가 생각하기에 가장 큰 문제는 강아지의 밥그릇을 없애라고 말하는 사람들이 음식을 사용하지 않고 개를 훈련하는 다른 모든 방법을 여러분과 공유할 만큼 깊이 있는 교육을 하려 하지 않는다는 것입니다. 그리고 저는 그것이 여기서 빠진 고리라고 생각합니다. 왜냐하면 강화는 여러분의 개들의 삶 곳곳에 있기 때문입니다. 네, 강화는 음식의 형태로 존재하죠. 제 말은 개 식사 시간으로 훈련하지 말라는 게 아닙니다. 개들이 어느 정도 음식을 먹어 배가 고파서 음식에 대해 지나치게 불안해하지 않을 때, 훈련을 하라는 뜻입니다. 그래야 개들도 자기 음식의 일부는 항상 밥그릇을 통해 나온다는 것을 알게 되니까요. 그리고 언젠가 그보다 더 많은 양을 줘야 할 때도 쉽게 할 수 있죠. 그동안에는 개들을 훈련할 수 있는 다른 방법들을 찾아보세요. 활동을 통한 강화를 사용할 수 있습니다. 예를 들어, 개들이 차 타는 것을 좋아한다면 전략적으로 계획을 세우는 거죠. 어차피 아이스크림을 사러 차를 타고 나가기 직전에 최고의 핸드 타겟을 수행하게 하는 식이죠. 아니면, 우리는 개들에게 아이스크림을 사주지는 않으니까요. 아니면 개가 수영하러 가는 것을 정말 좋아한다는 것을 알 때, 공원에 수영하러 갈 계획이라면, '홀드(물건 물고 있기)' 자세를 연습할 수 있습니다. 개가 아주 멋진 홀드 자세를 보여주면 장난감으로 보상을 해주고 바로 밖으로 달려 나가 수영을 하러 가는 것이죠. 여러분들이 할 수 있는 다른 일들은 정말 많습니다. 저도 음식으로 개들을 강화하지만, 저와 함께하는 상호작용 놀이로도 강화합니다. 우리 개들은 쫓아가는 것을 정말 좋아해요. 터그 놀이는 개를 보상하기에 아주 좋은 놀이입니다. 개가 좋아하는 활동들, 공 던지기, 원반 던지기 같은 것들 말이죠. 무엇이든 간에, 여러분이 훈련 중인 행동에 맞춰 바로 사용할 수 있도록 준비해 두세요. 그리고 최고의 보상은, 그래, 뭐 좀 하러 가자. 가서 미식축구 공 좀 던지고 놀자 하는 것이죠. 뭐, 강아지가 공을 잘 잡지 못할 수도 있지만, 제 말이 무슨 뜻인지 아실 겁니다. 그러니 강아지가 좋아하는 활동들을 기억해 두세요. 오 세상에, 우리 강아지는 언제 정말 행복해하지? 그것을 강화물로 활용하는 겁니다. 예를 들어,
this puppy was getting so anxious, which is another thing I've seen when dogs are only hand-fed. They get this anxiety. Some even get like a little bit guardy, whether that's because the food only comes when the person decides you're good enough. But there is definitely some anxiety when the dog has to be good enough to get your food. And I just don't think that's right. You know, we love our dogs. They should know you're going to get fed. And you know what, at 11 o'clock we're going to go and we're going to do some learning and that's going to be great. You're going to get fed some more. But I think the biggest problem is that people who are telling you to get rid of your dog's bowl, they don't want to go to the depths of education to share with you all the other ways to train a dog without using food. And I think that's the missing link here because reinforcement is everywhere in your dog's life. Yes, reinforcement is in the form of food. And I'm not saying don't train with your dog's meals. I'm saying train with your dog's meals once the dog has had some food so they're not so anxious about getting that food from you so that they know a portion of their food will always come in a bowl. And someday when you've got to make that more than a little portion, it's easy for you. In the meantime, look at other ways that you can train your dog. We can train using reinforcement of activities. So, you'd like to go for a car ride, then I'm going to strategically plan. You've done like the best hand target ever just before I was going to take you for a car ride to go get ice cream anyway. Or we're not buying ice cream for our dogs. Come on. Or you know the dog loves to go for a swim. You know you're going to the park for a swim. So, you might be working on, you know, hold position. They get you a great hold position. You can reward with a toy and then you're going to run out and go for a swim. There's so many other things you could be doing. I do reinforce my dogs with food, but I reinforce my dogs with interactive games with me. My dogs love to chase. The game of tug, a great game for rewarding a dog. Activities that your dog loves. Throwing a ball, throwing a frisbee, whatever it is, keep it handy to whatever behavior you're working on. And the ultimate reward is, yeah, let's go do something. Let's go toss around the football. All right. Maybe the dog might be not great at catching it, but you get what I mean. So, activities the dog loves. Keep them in mind like, oh my gosh, my dog gets so happy when. Use that as a reinforcement. Like you know,

어머니가 오시면 강아지가 너무 좋아해서 어쩔 줄 몰라 한다면요. 강아지가 어머니를 너무 좋아한다면, 훈련을 진행하면서 어머니께 9시에 잠깐 들러달라고 부탁하세요. 그럼 어머니께서 문을 열고 들어오실 때 여러분은 가서 최고의 보상을 받아! 하고 말하는 거죠. 최고예요. 그것보다 더 좋은 건 없죠. 강아지는 와, 할머니다! 할 테니까요. 네, 음식은 훈련에 사용하기 좋은 자원이지만, 활동들도 마찬가지입니다. 장난감도 그렇고요. 강아지가 삑삑 소리 나는 장난감을 좋아하나요? 땅바닥을 굴러갈 때 이상한 소리가 나는 장난감을 좋아하나요? 강아지가 좋아하는 것이 무엇이든, 그것이 훌륭한 강화물이 됩니다. 하지만 너무 자주 일어나는 일은, 사람들은 강아지가 축구공을 차주면 좋아한다는 걸 알죠. 그러면 나가서, 뒷마당에 축구공을 두고 느슨한 줄로 걷기 훈련(loose leash walking)을 좀 해보세요. 두 걸음 정도 잘 걸으면 축구공! 이라고 말하고 공이 있는 곳으로 달려가는 겁니다. 마치 성물처럼요. 그리고 강아지를 위해 공을 한두 번 차주세요. 자, 이제 다시 돌아와서 느슨한 줄로 걷기 훈련을 다시 하는 거죠. 그럼 어떻게 될까요? 강아지는 느슨한 줄로 걷는 것을 좋아하게 될 겁니다. 왜냐하면 그게 축구공 놀이로 이어질 가능성이 있기 때문이죠. 알겠죠? 여러분의 상상력을 발휘하세요. 결론은 강아지가 식사 스케줄에 따라 하루에 한두 번 혹은 세 번씩 여러분에게 밥을 얻어먹을 권리를 굳이 따낼 필요는 없다는 겁니다. 하지만 네, 강아지에게 직접 손으로 밥을 먹이는 것은 여러분과의 유대감을 쌓는 아주 좋은 방법입니다. 반복해서 강화해야 하는 행동들을 강화하기에도 아주 좋은 방법이죠. 예를 들면 리드줄을 하고 걸을 때 옆에 붙어 있는 위치 같은 거죠. 네, 저는 베이트 백을 몸 어딘가에 차고 산책하는 걸 정말 좋아해요. 아니면 재킷 주머니에 간식을 넣고 다니는 것도 좋아하고요. 집안 곳곳에 간식을 둔 작은 보관함들이 있는데, 이건 강아지에게 정해진 식사량을 주는 게 아니에요. 그냥 덤으로 주는 거죠. 이제 강아지의 체중을 계속 신경 써야 합니다. 우리는 매주 강아지들의 몸무게를 재서 모두의 체중을 파악하고, 아, 간식 양을 좀 줄여야겠구나 하는 것을 알 수 있죠. 그건 전혀 문제가 되지 않습니다. 우리는 충분한 운동을 시키니까 추가적인 간식은 결코 문제가 되지 않을 거예요. 그래서 네, 저는 손으로 직접 먹이는 걸 정말 좋아하지만, 밥그릇으로 강아지에게 밥을 주지 말라고 하는 요즘 유행은 좋아하지 않아요. 강아지들이 밥그릇으로 먹는 걸 좋아하도록 길들여져야 합니다. 왜냐하면 언젠가는, 누군가가 밥그릇으로 주지 말라고 해서 강아지가 밥그릇으로 먹지 않게 되었을 때 분명 후회하게 될 날이 올 테니까요. 알겠죠? 그게 이 최근의 이상한 유행에 대한 제 생각입니다. 저는, 강아지를 강화할 방법은 너무나 많다고 생각해요. 저에게 음식을 주지 않는 것은 그 방법 중 하나가 될 수 없어요.
your dog goes gaga when your mother comes over. Your dog just adores your mother. Then make sure that you're working on something and tell your mom, pop over at nine o'clock. And your mom's going to be opening the door and you're going to go, go see ultimate reward. Boom. Nothing is better. The dog is like, oh, it's grandma. So, yes, food is a great resource to use in your training, but so are activities. So are toys. Your dog likes squeakies. Your dog likes toys that make weird noises when they roll along the ground. Whatever it is that your dog loves, that is a great reinforcement. But what happens too often, people know my dog loves it when I kick the soccer ball to him. So, then go out, put the soccer ball in the backyard and do some loose leash walking. You get two steps of loose leash walking and then you say soccer ball and you run over to where it's standing in its enshrinement. And you kick it for your dog. You might kick it a couple of times. All right, let's go back and do some loose leash walking. And guess what? Your dog's going to love loose leash walking because it potentially leads to the soccer ball. All right. Use your imagination guys. Bottom line is dogs should not have to earn the right to get fed from you one or two or three times a day depending on the schedule of your dog. But yes, feeding your dog from your hand is a great way to build a bond with you. It's a great way to reinforce things that need to be reinforced over and over and over again, like the position of be at your side when they're walking on a leash. Yeah. I love walking with a bait bag somewhere on my body or cookies in my pouch of my jacket. I love doing that. There's little depots around my house everywhere where there's treats, but it isn't a measured amount of food for the dog. It's just extras. Now you've got to keep an eye on your dog's weight. We weigh our dogs once a week so we know what everybody weighs and we know, okay, we've got to cut back on the number of treats. That's never a problem. We give them enough exercise, extra treats are never going to be a problem. So, yes, I love hand feeding, but I don't love the fad of everybody telling you do not feed your dog from a bowl. They need the conditioning of learning to love to eat out of a bowl because there will come a day when you are going to be sorry that your dog won't eat out of a bowl because somebody told you not to feed them from one. Okay. So, that's my take on this latest crazy fad. I think that there's so many other ways that you can reinforce your dog. Withholding food isn't going to be one of them for
