Imagine if you presented a child with a very complex algebra equation. Would you expect that child to be able to solve it if you had only just taught them simple mathematics? Yet, too often people expect their dogs to recall off of a screaming rabbit just because they taught them sit down, hum in the kitchen with some bits of cheese. It's a big gap between teaching behaviors and expecting good decisions. Because every behavior our dogs give us, gives us feedback on what they know, on what we've trained them. It's not giving us feedback on how brilliant they were born. It's not giving us feedback on the limitations of the breed. It's giving us feedback on what we've taught them. Because sometimes what you think you've taught isn't what the dog learned. And what the dog learned is the only thing that matters.
