Episode 4 - Monkey See, Monkey Do
NePoPoFull Quadrant Podcast ·

hey everybody how you doing I'm here with Jason Jason how are you doing hey Mike I'm doing good trying to keep warm another another episode out today gonna start talking about monkey SE monkey do with monkey SE monkey do a lot of times you you learn how to do something but you don't know why it's being done or why it's happening right the reason behind that thing that you're watching yeah so they I mean monkey see monkey do it's a phrase that people apply to dog trainers that imitate someone else's training on their own dog or or on a client dog right and like you said primarily monkey see monkey do is a great way to learn how to do something like go through the motions but it does not serve the purpose of educating the actual individual as to why the why of the the why of the the whole process is left out completely that's that's the problem is because you might try something on a dog and you have no understanding as to why it would be used other than oh I saw someone else do it you know maybe saw someone do this on a doodle and then you're trying to do this on like a dominant dog and the dog you know gives you a different a different outcome but when when you're first starting out though kind of start like that right you just start learning training looking watching people what they're doing and then training your I mean yes watching someone do something is a primary way to digest information and adopt a skill right but especially especially a trade skill a Hands-On skill something that requires your hands or or your movement or your body but even though a lot of people learn that way the thing for me about Monkey C Monkey do is you should be simultaneously seeking to understand why you do what you do yeah if that's why you need you need a coach right you need somebody there that has experience so they can tell you like what you're doing um and why it's working why it's not working and how to use it correctly so are you saying are you calling out all the uh remote online web-based trainers or are you saying that you can't like is that an ineffective way to learn how to train a dog ineffective no I think it comes down when you get into more I'll say more like Nuance stuff more what I would say it's like real dog training right where you're looking at the motivations of the dog and you're looking at how they respond to you know rewards and how they respond to pressure and um knowing learning how to use that for the particular dog right so a lot of times that's where you can start with all that right just Monkey C Monkey do the stuff online but I think you need to quickly get to somebody that guiding you right you have to get to

somebody that's guiding you if you keep going if you're lucky and your dog is just the type of dog that doesn't matter what you do then yeah everything will be fine but I think what happens is people don't realize that the the problems that creep up later are because you were doing something that you saw and not knowing why the reason behind it so you were probably you might have been doing something with your dog that your dog did not need not necessarily did not need but maybe shouldn't have done on them and how many people create their own problems by doing something that looks trendy like there's I mean let's talk sports for a minute I I know that's a bullet point or or a segment to get into but real quick just because it flows nicely a lot of people training for sport whether that's you know ring PSA shutz end they see a trending trainer utilize a uh a method of training a certain exercise that could be a retrieval exercise that could could be a an outing exercise whatever it is and it becomes very popular right I remember you know a few years ago there was uh for for dumbbell retrieves there was the two toy method that caught fire amongst uh shuts and dog trainers and it was very popular it's a very effective method but I was exposed to a lot of people who wanted to use that method and I'm like your dog doesn't need that method and and they're like well their dogs look good I'm like well your dog looks good too like why why do you what what benefit do you think this is going to give your dog and they couldn't explain that to me and I said look I don't have a problem with doing the the latest and greatest that's that's great if it's if it's for the right dog if it's the right method for the right dog it's a great it's a great way to do it absolutely and but if you don't know why you're doing something you probably shouldn't be doing it in the beginning right I and I've and for me it's like I I just and this is a personal thing I just for me I have to justify and I I seek a deep understanding about things before I move on something right and that's just me right some people can get away with it without knowing the why but like for me it's really important that I understand the why um maybe because I've had some bad experiences may I got bit a couple times you know and you know I I really learned to respect the dog or the animal in front of you you know yeah but and that and it goes to to when you first start dog training you're thinking about what you're doing and not about the effect it's having on the dog right the more like the more dogs I see and the more dogs I train the more things I learn from other people you

know I think every person that's been training for a while that has experience I think they start looking at okay what did I just do and why did my dog react like that yeah so instead of keep going to keep going and keep going and be like I should this should be working it's you're looking at everything that happens and stopping and analyzing it before you move on what were you gonna say oh just Again the video I shared this video with you and maybe I should uh embed it into our onto our feed maybe a picture and picture there was a video from a a very famous well-known well-respected trainer out of Europe and he was highlighting on on his social media how he teaches the dog to out and what he uses as reinforcement when the dog correctly lets go of a tug a ball a toy whatever it is and so he's playing with his dog and the video shows him playing with his dog he's tugging he's having fun and the dog's having a good time and he gets down on his knees next to this dog who appears to be like the age of 9 months to 12 months old right it's a German shepherd and he gets down next to the dog and he he calls the dog to out and the dog doesn't quite out and then after like a couple couple moments the dog lets go and he praises the dog and encourages the dog to kiss him in the face like lip contact dog is kissing the face and seen doing that and that triggers a a reward or or a a Rel reward right what in that that was kind of the reward in that video right well that's that's what the that's what the trainer was claiming was the reward was the reward for outing is the interaction he has with the dog kissing his face right like that's what he claimed his dog found rewarding which I mean might be true I won't say it's not but what I'm saying is the monkey see monkey do someone on Instagram might be scrolling and they stumble on that video and they're like oh that's all I have to do to get my doged out that's so much more appealing than PR using a prong or a pinch collar or using an e-collar or you know popping my dog on the leash to to get to create an out right let me try that but the dog that they have might be a little dominant might have a little too much energy or might you know and and so they get the dog down the dog out and out of frustration the dog is right there next to you in the face and the dog claps claps you on the face with his mouth or bumps you or nudges you or bumps one of your teeth out right it doesn't have to be that the dog bites you right maybe he's not like aggressive but maybe he Bonks you in the face right and then you bust out five teeth you know like and then it's a quick trip to

to the dentist for an expensive Bill expensive yeah it's it's you know it's it's things like that and to say that you know like oh and this goes deeper and again I'm not like the trainers you know very good but I I'm just qu I question this type of training because and promoting this and it makes me think is like this is this is the kind of training that you have to promote when you live in Europe where you can't show that you actually use tools right this is what you have to use you have to you have to claim that you only train with a relationship and and not promote methods that you rely on tools to train and I I I thought that was funny thing is this like if somebody sees that and then tries it with their dog and their dog is not the type of dog to do that with that trainer has experience he knows that dog right yeah he knows what it can do what it can't do so he feels comfort doing it with that dog yeah you do it with another dog that again it's it's Drive is up from playing with a tug and then you just took his toy away now he's pissed at you toy he's like whack give me that toy back and not because HT you right but the drive is there yeah it's again it's monkey see monkey do someone scrolling some innocent teenager who might have gotten their first working dog Scrolls through stumbles on that sees that and like oh that's how you got to teach it and I want a good relationship and there're they're promoting relation-based training on their on their page and that's what they take as advice to train their dog and boom they get nailed or bumped or you know heaven forbid something worse or you know that's why the the risks of monkey see monkey do don't do something unless you know the reason why and if you still aren't convinced you know the absolute reason why and if it's the right fit get coaching right go to someone who knows who can help you safely navigate the the obstruction of that exercise yeah exactly but but it's it's the problem that that's kind of the challenge is like there are a lot of exercises that are called like you know Bart ref refers to them as monkey drills and they're very easy it's like sit you know you can lure dogs into sits and at the end of the day they can be taught very quickly but if you don't have the understanding of like why would you choose one method over another if you can't clearly dis uh distinguish or Define the response to that question it's probably best you get a coach and then like what you said about different ways like shaping luring that's another thing some dogs need to be lured and shouldn't be shaped like my dog Khan for example he needs

more luring than over shaping and for two reasons because he's already like a confident dog right and he's pretty like strong in like in his temper so the shaping makes him more independent right and you don't need more of that with him I don't need more than that with him but also I'd like to see it just because I like watching the I like watching the Mike and con show from a distance but you know but the other thing is this he gets frustrated quickly and a dog that gets frustrated quickly when you start free shaping he's like I I just want just show me what to do yeah right forget about all this just show me what to do so I can do it uh and then he he needs that a little bit of free shaping but then he needs to show me what to do and I'll do it talk about the dog you just told me about and and I mean maybe the owner corrected the dog based off of how they saw someone else correcting a similar dog yeah right but yes so I got a call about a m that had bitten a person in the family and you happened during training and what happened was the dog didn't perform the the command that was given or the queue so they corrected it they applied a correction and then the dog after the correction came and bit the person and then but and that goes again to monkey see monkey do because like what we learn what we learn in Naple po one of the main things and everybody I think everybody has heard it at some point but maybe it hasn't sunk in is you can't give a correction unless the dog knows the behavior you're asking for and knows what a correction is that's the whole point of Na PO is teaching the dog what a correction is so that the energy from the correction is put into the behavior and not into the person handling the dog right and it's and things like that are really horrible stories right like you don't want to see people getting hurt you don't want to see dogs or people getting hurt we want to be able to train safely and that dog and owner enjoy their time bonding through training that's that's what's important I think again it's a necessary conversation to make sure that you understand what you're doing with your dog and how to do it correctly the the dose you know uh the correct amount of force pressure correction what to withhold when to withhold for how long all of these factors it's a very Dynamic this isn't a one or two-dimensional it's not even a three-dimensional training construct this is a four-dimensional there are there are four Dynamics to this right and yeah and that's that's where again the monkey see monkey do if you see somebody correct their dog for some reason don't do it on your dog unless

you know and have been Co Behavior like it fixes a behavior and you're like okay next time my dog does that I'm gonna do it but and that goes to like the one thing you know the thing I learned from neor po I I always remember B saying it was what do you do if your dog doesn't do but doesn't know right you do nothing yeah that's hard but what do you do if your dog doesn't do but knows very well what to do then go into the consequences but that's the point is you have to know what stage your dog is at and also when you're watching a video online you have to know what stage that dog is at yeah what the person is doing because and that's never that that that information that people consume online it's never presented to the viewership so the the viewers do not know what the background of the dog is what the the level of um understanding about certain behaviors or Corrections or pressures are on that dog so they're just taking at face value it's like a it's a finite glimpse of a moment and they're using that to project um an outcome onto their dog yeah oh that reminds me it was our existential food podcast the comment I think it was on that one um where the comment about the puppy here's the question or the person said so if you have puppy or dog you take them outside to train with their food and instead of taking food from you they decide to chase the leaves blowing in the wind do you immediately take them back inside and create them and is creating a dog that won't take food the best approach and that goes to what we're saying right the answer for that is if it's a puppy and it doesn't know no you you you just stop the training you might let it chase the leaves right then but then you come back later and then try again right because consequences should come and more severe consequences should come if the dog understands as the dog understands more and more then you can apply more severe consequences right yeah so in that if the puppy starts chasing the leaves you just stop training and you come back later right and stop training doesn't mean you go put him in the crate because that's more of like negative punishment yeah right what you do is you stop the food goes away and then you let him chase the leaves you let him see whatever if it's a young puppy right the dog knows and understands then you can take a different route on that yeah I agree I mean monkey seem monkeyd can be important uh there are some good things about it is that it allows uh visual Learners you know an easy way to pick up a skill set right you know you can walk through the motions of something but I think we're both in agreement that any type of

monkey see monkey do should also have an accomp accompanying explanation behind monkey see monkey do yeah or at least if you start seeing something that you don't like your dog don't keep doing it find out okay maybe what I was doing was not appropriate for my dog right yeah what I'm trying to teach yeah so because you like have a lot of experience with bite work had anything come to mind when it comes to bite work about monkey see monkey do that people do and don't understand why they just keep doing it oh there's I don't we we we need our it's a separate it's a separate episode we have we needed a full episode for that I mean like just off of the top of my head I mean you think about the different sports right I mean let's talk shuton because shon's like the sport I play in the most there's the use of the whip right you get helpers who jump into the sport and they're they're maybe they're they have a young club right and there's not a whole lot of like experi experience or direction and you know the helper they're probably consuming videos watching people do helper work and and you know so they see people cracking the Whip and this that and so they're like oh okay well you must crack the whip to do this and maybe they they maybe they interpret what they've seen on social media or YouTube differently and they apply it differently with the dogs and now they're like just whipping all over the place you know there's there's like meaningless whips but they're they in their mind they think they're whipping because that's just what they do but another bism is you know the eye sees what the brain knows or the eyes can only see what the brain knows right and so you you sit there watching these helper videos training Protection work sport dogs or you know whatever type of working dog you're on and and you see things happening and they happen for a reason in that video but you don't that that that gets Lost in Translation and explanation yeah yeah there's no explanation to it and and so you go home and you're like whipping and cracking the Whip and maybe you do like some it just and it maybe it ruins the dog you're working on and now the dog BEC stick aggressive or whip aggressive uh and so so that's one one classic example is like they call him whipping boys you know are you a Whipping Boy you need just cracking the whip you know um yeah and one I've seen is that when the the helper gives a shallow bite on purpose oh uhuh right yeah again that is there's a purpose for that yeah right but then if you if you're new like you said and then you see somebody do that now you start doing it to every dog

even dogs that don't need that technique for a specific reason now that's going to cause problems down the road right what's going to happen later from the technique you're using this is actually a really good conversation and we weren't planning on it going in this or I wasn't planning on it going in this direction but we should definitely follow it because uh you know for those that are that are uh attending silver schools planning to attend silver schools that have been to a Nao seminar workshop online course you may have heard the phrase chicky chicky Chaka right so if we're talking about Protection work another problem in protection work is the dance that the helper does to activate the dog which is not correct training the the the actual goal of good helper work or decoy work in dog training or for protection work is that the dog brings the activity and the helper is reactive right and too many times I think the number one I think the number one if I'm observing all the things I've seen in protection work from helpers new to experienced and everything in between I think the biggest problem with training is there's too much activity on the helper side and the helper does too much to bring out too little in the dog right and that's always how it will be if the if the helper is the active one and the dog is the the reactive one and I think that's the probably the biggest thing uh in monkey see monkey do you get these aspiring new PSA decoys they're all excited it's fun I mean it's an adrenaline rush so there's no doubt about it it's it's it's something cool it's it's very I mean I remember the first time I took a bite in the suit I still have the video and at the time my wife was videoing the shot and she was panning across as a dog I got a bicep from a German Shepherd a bicep bite from a German shepherd and I turn around and look at her and the the size of the grin on my face I was like you know I was like that Cheshire Cat off of Alice in Wonderland just like this big old grin of teeth and it's fun but people consume videos YouTube and they get attracted to the shiny objects and they just don't understand what they're looking at and they think this is how it has to be to bring a dog into Protection work and then they do all this like you know the Chicken Dance The all that stuff and that yeah and that that's where the whip comes in too right oh yeah the clatter stick you got a clatter stick in one hand and the whip like a lasso you know it's like the they come out yeah the dog is just looking and then they come out and they're like and then the dog starts barking right now and then the problem comes now

the dog needs that to get activated yeah he won't he won't do it without because he's been conditioned that he's only supposed to bark when someone animates him where and you know where you see that you see it a lot lot in police dog videos oh always when there's a passive guy and the dog just they send the dog to bite and the dog runs right by him well he's just looking for that active decoy there was the pr video from from the from Europe I I believe it was the Netherlands it was there was this video circulating maybe a year and a half two years ago maybe even three probably more than that CO's messed with my my sense of uh timeline here but there was a dog that went was sent on a guy who was completely naked the dog had never seen a naked guy and the guy was just walking and then the dog just started barking at him and then he just started healing next to this this guy who he was sent to go engage right a fail a failed deployment I mean we're not a we're not a police canine podcast but like that was definitely a fa a failed deployment and there's one here in the states recently where it's in front of like a business or something it's at night I saw that the guy sends him the dog runs right by him and then he's just like he's he's looking for somebody to fight every anyone except for the guy that he supposed to bite because the guy's not he's not loud he's not waving his arms he's not moving around right he's not doing the typical picture that he's used to seeing in training where he does get a bite right and the dog has the dog has learned that I can't bite unless ABC happens and ABC is helper jumps out he's in a suit he's in equipment and he's doing this like agitative dance and that's where the chicky chicky Chaka comes in right where the dog needs that to do anything that's the problem I mean we could go with bite work for a while right there's a lot well I mean I I've mentioned this one in our podcast on opposition reflex but I'm I'm gonna I'm G to keep screaming this the number of times I see people trying to teach a push bite by walking away from the dog where the dog ends up pulling right the or the dog pulls back and then they walk backwards like that's what the dog want like that's not how you I mean you it just shows a misunderstanding of opposition reflex like if the direction you want the dog to go is into you you have to do something that creates that direction in the and it comes from the dog it's not that you're making it happen it's the dog is choosing to respond that way and he he learns that that type of Forward Motion into the decoy or the helper is what provides the

reinforcement yeah going away from bite work right the other thing I see a lot is reward placement yep and one of the big things is where the reward placement if your dog is healing on the left the reward is behind you on the right side right so the dog has to when you give your marker to go get the reward the dog has to back up a little bit and come behind you to access that reward again there's a purpose for that right there's a reason and it's to keep the dog from forging right from going too far forward because on their mind they're like well I'm gonna have to go back because the dog will start um what's it called will'll start cheating towards where the reward is going to be yeah so what happens is instead of it anticipating that the reward is going to be forward and it starts sneaking forward a little bit right it anticipates the rewards going to be back behind it so it stays back or it might start even going back I've got another good one to throw in there for obedience right is the active or the passive style power they call them powerups for dogs uh where you say and they would be used in a situation where you say you have a dog that's maybe a little bit flatter in their obedience and you want to build a little bit of pressure so the dog becomes more energetic flashier looks a little bit uh more energized so a lot of people have the dog come out and they'll either ask the dog to start barking something that elevates the dog's emotion their adrenaline in the moment and then they turn into healing and again it can work it's it's a it's a method that works for some dogs but this is another phase or Trend that caught fire online is having dogs bark at you and then you go quickly into the healing and I was out a I was I was at one of the um uh one of the helper events that I attended you know in the last three four years and I was sitting down with uh or overhearing a conversation between um uh gentleman uh famous gentleman uh Frank Phillips world team competitor World judge and he had he had made the comment that he only ever noticed dogs leak in trial that were trained with this type of like they would encourage barking to build to build energy in The Obedience and it was an interesting comment because I was like huh that's really interesting because yeah like it makes a lot of sense and for some dogs they can bark and then go into obedience and maintain a level of capped Drive where they control leaking where's the where they vocalize or they whine or or you know maybe there's some barking going on during The Obedience but there's not a lot of people that are skilled enough to to handle or or to finesse the dogs

drives to control the leaking and now down the road after that after that big Wildfire of getting dogs to bark for obedience you have dogs that are now leaking in trial or the other thing is you know a lot of people would spin their dog out of out of a heel before they reward the dog and they reward for the spin and not for the heel which is a great a great method but again if you don't know what you're doing and why you're doing it I I was at a I was at a a trial in I think it was October or November but I watched the dog in the back transport instead of staying focused on the helper doing uh the the back transport on the helper the dog started spinning in anticipation of being rewarded probably to either get a toy or to go get a bite right and then the it required the Handler to call them back to heal right and that's the thing it's it's not about what you do necessarily it's like we said the why behind it it's why you do it yes people don't those techniques are for to use at certain points and with certain dogs but when you start creating a pattern now like that dog he expects like oh after I spin I always get rewarded yeah and I haven't had a spin so let me offer the spin just in case I get rewarded and let me be clear I'm not knocking or digging at these methods because if you know why you're doing it with the right dog they're super and like these are methods that get people to the worlds and the national podiums right so I'm not knocking the methods I'm knocking the method without understanding a pro without a proper understanding of why it should be used and what the philosophy for its use is that's that's the thing that I'm calling into question and and it all comes back to people seeing someone it catches fire online on social media on YouTube and they just monkey see monkey do it right without that understanding and and like for my club with my with my Shing group I tell people like hey look I'm all about like bring everything you've got to the table and let's because sometimes we we've got a few dogs we have to be really creative with like there are some things that we're I'm like hey I don't know what to do let's just try let's just throw everything at the wall see what sticks and if you can't explain to me why you're doing what you're doing for your dog especially if I if I can suggest you know a way that might be a little bit more effective and provide better results then that's that's where it's like okay well let's not waste our time or spin our wheels just chasing the the trendy Training Method let's let's really dig down to the to the root of training and look at let's let's get the dog to

train yeah yeah I it's it's it's use what you need but use it until you don't need it anymore right don't make it part of the pattern don't make it part of that context and that behavior because that's a thing things happen the dog will think that's part of it and we start will offer it and what you know when it's going to offer it is not when you're training but when you go to trial yeah that's when it'll show up when you don't expect it espe especially because now there's no rewards they haven't been rewarded for a while and if the dog is a little bit creative they're going to be like what what do I have to do to get the reward to show up right or in that case to get the bite I I mean there's so many situations I have so many examples of this like there was one time someone I was working with was doing something in in their tracking and I was just being curious I was like why are you doing it that way and the the reason was because they had seen it on a video online course that I had actually promoted and shared with them and it wasn't really the the right thing for the dog at the time not that it was a de um an incorrect thing to use with the dog but it wasn't really like the dog didn't quite needed at that point and so I was just questioning and you know just being curious about the method and at the end of the day I I was like well I don't think the dog needs that you know it doesn't for me it didn't make sense um but anyways you know they uh took that to be very offensive and it was just unfort an unfortunate situation because you know I'm always questioning my methodologies and looking for better ways to do things I'm not in the business to provide clients or friends second rate information I want to provide them you know what's best and and that's that's what committed to and I don't think you can do that strictly through monkey see monkey do just watching things and repeating or regurgitating them because you saw someone else do them who in their own right they might be a World level competitor or they might be a famous trainer for this that or the other but without that understanding of why that one thing is being done like be a little bit more Curious you know yeah well IDE it's to have somebody that you can um ask you know if you see something online I would say try it but don't keep doing it if you don't understand why so especially if you you have somebody say Hey you know about this technique right so like if I came to you say hey Jason do you know why uh people do this I saw this online you know why they do it and hopefully you know if you have experience with it you're going to say yeah

they do that for this reason and if you know me and my dog you'll say I wouldn't suggest you use it or yeah you should try that and see how it works right right but with everything you can experiment there's a difference between experimenting with what you see and making it part of your like training repertoire right yeah and again don't don't just do it just because you saw it and it's flashy and it looks good yeah the I was going to say something um another another example of things that are done in the monkey SE monkey do that can be wrong are now now there's a lot of uh Boogeyman style work that that's go passing around the making its rounds on online uh there's a lot of um fence work that's being uh it's caught fire quite recently um uh the the Godfrey dild die fence um and yeah it's things like that that you you Boogeyman the wrong dog and you can either break him mentally or you can get like run the risk of creating a dog who's going to be risky you know if you if you do it the wrong way like the like dog training is equal parts science equal parts art it's and it's in the artistic creativity that the real success is had I think yeah but you you have to have somebody with you that has done it before that has experience yeah right you have to have somebody to fall back on so you can say Hey you know is this right should I do this or in training when they can see your dog and be like okay we're not going to do that anymore let's try something else because in that moment you might think okay this might be good for this dog but then you have to look what is the consequence what is the outcome of that like right then not after you've done it a 100 times but right then you have to see what where we're going with it and say okay we need to change direction so let me ask you this Mike what is your advice for someone who only has the only way they could possibly learn dog training is through like remote learning opportunities or con consuming video content right what what is your and I mean beond like both you and I we were honest like in our first episode said we had we acknowledged that our our first introduction to dog training was a lot of it uh a lot of it was influenced by the the Ellis videos the leberg videos the the online I mean I I found dog training all together or uh dog sport all together through through YouTube and so I mean we all got our start someplace there's a good well there's a good example of that when I started training with the Michael Ellis videos I was training with a friend and there was there was something oh yeah you know like Michael Ellis would have the tug on the outside back and outside of the

dog and the reward placement would come from there to right above the dog's head right so the dog knows the tug is there but when you when you pay it would come here and it's it's kind of like a distraction right the tug is there the dog knows it's there but it has to stay in position and then the reward placement after that comes to where the dog is and not to you know in that moment not to let the dog go get that which is another con because you could do both depending on what you need from that dog but what happened was we were training and then a person asked my friend why are you doing that and we didn't know we didn't know the reason back then right we we just knew like this is what Michael ell this is what someone else did who got a good result that you wanted to mimic right you wanted to arrive at that same result like it was difficult for me in the beginning was to analyze the training as it was happening like each rep yeah like seeing what did my dog just do and what effect is that going to have later right if they didn't do what I expected so for somebody new you have to know before you start what am I trying to accomplish yeah and not just overall but in this session and even more sometimes in this rep what am I trying to accomplish and the point is if it's not happening then you don't keep going right you stop and either you ask somebody who knows or you ask your Mentor or you ask somebody you train with or you try something else yeah you know um but again it's there was a person I knew that they changed trainers different trainers every like month uhuh which kind of goes to monkey see monkey do so they were doing one technique one month and the next month is same same behavior but a different technique right and then they saw something else and now they're doing something else so so the dog was I mean forget about confused it it just didn't know which way to go yeah and not to be thought of as hypocritical like learn from everybody obviously right learning is it's a it's it's a continual Spectrum right it's you're constantly on this revolving hamster wheel of learning right you'll never really arrive at at a destination of Having learned everything about dog training that's not that'll never happen but I think again it's the purpose and understanding how it fits into the type of dog you have and what you're capable of because some people just aren't capable of certain training Styles like you know Ivan balabanov is a is a ninja with his reward placement using his like if you've seen him train with a frisbee he can do like some yoga like contortionism and like deliver rewards lightning speed you know it's

and it's it's amazing I can't do that like I'd break I'd break my shoulder trying to trying to deliver a deliver a frisbee like that um not that that's the only way he delivers a frisbee but like you know um and and there are just some things that people have like maybe they have a physical constraint or um maybe they get injured for a time and they're on crutches and they can't train a certain way right like so use what's right for the dog what's what's what's good and capable within your realm within your lane your wheelhouse and when you find the the those two that fit together that's where you're going to find the harmony the the the momentum right because until you have that fit right where you're capable and then it's right for the dog you're not going to get momentum you'll have inertia you'll just be pinballing it's like the person you're talking about they're going all over the place take maybe they're good methods but like they're trying to create this Frankenstein and it's like it's not giving that person or the dog momentum in a direction that they want to go yeah and and there's two things with that one is it can also lead to frustration because it's not working with your dog yeah and maybe you take it out on your dog because you think your dog's busted yeah you know um the other thing is like going to that where people like see stuff and try to use it you know sometimes that technique is part of a bigger training methodology where there's something that happened before that that led to that that you had to implement to get to that point right and which is you see a lot of trainers online even like worldclass trainers right but they have their own system of training if you only take one bit of that and add it to your training but don't understand why they did it right right it's not going to work with you and then problems happen and you know they bleed over into other things or they happen later on like you said it happens in the trial the problem shows up at the point you don't need it to show up yeah and if you follow most people it's you have to know their whole training style and then Implement those things according to their training style or system or whatever I think the trainers that I look up to that have accomplished a lot in their careers mostly I mean the ones I'm talking about are like dog sport trainers competitors I wouldn't consider them educated they're they're very knowledgeable and intelligent but I mean it's not like they went to school for phds in K9 behavioral Theory right that like what they were what led them to become good dog trainers was their ability to

experiment not just their ability to experiment but their willingness to experiment and the the ability to make correct adjustments based off of a of a an experiment gone wrong or to continue and double down on on an experiment that went well and they I mean for those types of people everything was on the table because you're trying to you're trying to earn those points those those three points that take you from a from a 94 to a 97 in shuton you know bumps you up a a category I mean but that's where Monkey C Monkey do is not a good thing but it's well I can say for those people monkeyy monkey do is a good thing because they're experimenting but they they are analyzing what they're doing right but they're not they're not monkey they're not monkey I I would I would say that's not Monkey C Monkey do because they're not following someone else they're just experimenting ing themselves like they've run into a problem and they're like okay I've exhausted all of the things that I know how to normally train this Behavior those don't work now I need to think outside the rephrase that because monkey see mon monkey do mimic it's mimicry right but what it is is they look they take something somebody else is done and they try it they experiment with it but then they analyze the outcome immediately and they're good enough to realize if it's good or if it's bad right for their for that training or for that dog yeah so you have to you have to mimic other people but not mindlessly yeah I think that's the the recurring theme of this is that doing without knowing can be risky yeah right because again the the adage goes a dog bites a cat scratches and a horse kicks you know hear Bart say that Bart and Michael you know they talk about that a lot and they've been doing a lot with their horses you know showing people that training is training learning it's learning like every every living thing wants to find advantageous outcomes in their life right and they're proving that with horses you know they're proving it with dogs is is there is there monkey see monkey do in teaching like what do I mean like classroom style teaching or what yeah like teaching like dog training like somebody that's good at remembering things and regurgitating them but they don't know why right so I can teach you how to lure a certain way for example sure but I don't know why you would use that over another method oh yeah for sure I mean there like that's where I think a lot of people who are educated who I mean Went to went to school some sort of like postsecondary School uh University um they learn how to they learn how to test right they that's the

skill that is taught at University is teaching you how to take a test on material that you need to learn in a very short amount of time right that's the skill that is being taught once once CE uh you get past that test you go back and you try to put those people into a conversation about the material they may not remember it because they just regurgitated it right and it may not have been solidified or it may not have set in and and kind of took hold in long-term memory yeah um but that's like the stages kind of like say for dog training dog training is not just Theory but it's also the Practical part is doing yeah right and if you go through you can learn the theory but you have to understand the theory and then you can put it into practice but the next stage is you have to understand why you're doing what you're doing and on top of that it's important because if you don't know why you're doing what you're doing when you encounter an outcome that you don't expect you have no solution so say you monkey see monkey do something and then the dog gives you an unpredictable outcome or an undesirable outcome or something happens that you weren't planning for but you only knew as you only knew so much to do the motion without the understanding of the why you can't deal with the Fallout from that situation y right so even a teacher who can stand in front of an audience and and like lecture about you know dog training or whatever it is without the the repetitions and just the the regurgitation that would not be an ideal person to be coached by maybe maybe they're a good teacher lecturer to convey uh information but to learn and gain skills from it becomes a very challenging thing because they have not seen or or maybe the in in their trainers backpack they don't have as many out uh as many solutions for a problem as someone else might have given more experience yeah it goes to like don't don't show me what you can do when everything is going right show me what you can do when everything's going wrong yeah right and you have to have made mistakes you know to learn from them yeah or else when it when it it does happen you don't know what to do and the higher the drive in the dog the higher the stakes are because tolerances are tighter pressure is greater um both on the on the business end of the dog and on and what's required to communicate to the dog sometimes again what B says it's a knife that cuts both ways you have to know the both ways you can't know just one way right yeah that's that's a that's interesting yeah glad we got off on that tangent oh the other thing about Monkey C Monkey do right is that all

you're seeing is like a 30 second clip also the person might have done five minutes of not working and then you see the 30 seconds of when it does work 30 seconds that it works and now you're like man why is it working for me yeah right it's like yeah because they took the best one out of that 10 minutes or whatever of work and they're like see see what I can do this is and this is what's hard about social media it it's it's put people one of the disadvantages to learning via social media Media or online learning remote learning video recorded learning is just that it doesn't give you the full picture the full spectrum of what it took to arrive at a correct repetition or a correct outcome and you don't see the struggle because again in the Talent Code the struggle is required for the myelination it the the Deep yeah it causes Better Learning stronger learning yeah but see for the most part we've been talking about the like more of the sports people and dog trainers right like sure people are training their own dogs now where it's a problem even bigger because if you mess up your dog or and not mess up in a bad way but it's doing stuff that you didn't want it to do you know now you have to fix some problems it's your own dog but how many times have you gone to you know clients homes and they they're doing something and you saywell you know why are you doing that or where'd you learn it they go oh I saw it online yeah right and now that's another I mean it's good for business because now that's another problem you have to fix right kind of like the Caesar Milan effect you know how he does his little he like flanks him in the neck or in in the flank with it prods him with his two fingers and he goes right do that to the wrong dog do that to KH when he's a little bit like you know how many how many people do you think have been bit because they tried to their dog for for doing something it shouldn't have done there was a the same thing where um it was a person they they had a clicker and the dog didn't sit they said sit right the dog didn't sit and then they clicked they start clicking at it right they just clicked and nothing happened and they said I was like I go just don't put that away don't don't do that anymore sit down son but it's it that's it's the thing I think that's the worst is the pet dog people that have no guidance at all yeah they just go online trying to get some guidance and they see something that looks good or the person online made it look good or made it look like it can work yeah and then they try it and at best it just doesn't work or at worst it causes more problems yeah so real quick I just

realized we never really came to or came to an answer on the question I asked you about what's your recommendation for people who maybe they're on an island isolated away from training there's no training nearby what what what do like what do you recommend I mean is monkey see monkey do video remote learning learning without an in-person coach is that still a a feasible way to go about doing things or what what do you suggest to people in those situations because I'm sure there's a lot that are going to be listening to us and they're like well I kind of just have to do it myself because I don't have a club available I don't have a you know there's no local trainers you know willing to take on a an Apprentice or something like that I think you have to plan your training and you have to have a goal in that session and you have to be able to stop immediately and try to analyze what happened right which is what experimenting is you try something and you you have an outcome in mind and if it doesn't happen then you have to stop and say well why didn't it happen you know is it something I did wrong is it not good for this dog do I need to change something do I have to go back and watch what I watched before and there's something I miss because a lot of times it's little nuances that people miss when they're watching the videos yeah that if they implemented them it would change the training altoe but it's that it's stop and analyze what happened you know even if it went right you have to stop and analyze that's the hardest part it's so difficult to do that so you know I mean the difference with very experienced people is they're analyzing in between each rep and they're able to adjust like you said they're able to adjust their training in the repetitions rather than stop and think about it yeah I think one thing that helps people in this situation that you know may may not have super access to um coaching or whatever they need in the dog training industry is recording yourself recording your uh sessions and then reviewing it I mean because for a for a long time that's what I've had to do you know it's like 20 hour drive for me to go East to to train my dogs on a on a helper that I I you know trust or it's 10 hours 15 hours to the west of me um if I want to go to someone else you know to to put my dogs on but nowhere near me is is remotely anyone close enough that I that I'm G to put my dogs on and so a lot of times like if I'm doing obedience I'll set up a tripod put a camera out there and I'll record my session and then in between TR like you said I'll go back and review the rep and make sure it

was correct the way I thought it was or incorrect the way I thought it was and yeah you know so you kind of have to be creative that's the importance of a good spotter right yeah that in your training uh even if they're not like super worldclass experience they still can notice things and help you out you know it doesn't it doesn't have to be somebody more exper experience than you or same experience it can be anybody that can tell you oh this is what you did or this is what I noticed you know now it helps when their person has more experience but spotter the videoing yourself yep ultimately is either go and learn from people that a lot of people say I would say that are agree that are good that know what they're doing go somewhere and learn you might have to pay you know to get get the knowledge and get the why yeah the last thing I think we should talk about a little bit was we you mentioned it but we I don't think we ever really D dove into it was tools tools and tools as it relates to monkey see monkey do yeah the main thing with that is knowing the different tools and their advantages and disadvantages you know and if you see somebody that's using an e-collar doesn't mean go buy an e collar and just slap it on your dog I mean this is this is a call out to be better this is a call to action to the dog training industry right there are some training franchises that in their programs it is called out you see the client you put the prong or a slip on the dog how many how many wrong dogs have been the recipient of getting a pinch collar put on him and then started manifesting a bigger problem than they already had because of the wrong tools and you know so like we we need we owe it to ourselves and to our future clients or people that we're going to give advice to with dogs we owe it to those people to know the why so that we can not just do hey here's a prong caller put it on your dog pop up if he does this and then you end up in the hospital right because the dog decided to come up the leash when you should have been using a slip collar on the dog yes yeah and that goes to monkey see monkey do right they you see like oh look at this you know the for the slip lead a lot of people call it like the dominant dog collar right which is a slip lead that is fitted so it stays up high higher on the neck and doesn't slide down right or the prong you know this is what I learned from Bart also was having the prong loose and not high and tight and the reason is because when the prong is high and tight there's pressure all the time and then you add more pressure whereas when it's loose now it's clearer to the dog

there's no pressure and there's pressure no pressure pressure it's very clear when the pressure starts so your communication is better there's only two people I've seen do that and that is Bart and Ivan there the only two people I've seen do that and when you say something you know everybody's going to say yeah but this is what even the the the the makers like Herm Springer this is what they teach this is how to put it on I was like yeah but dog training is about communication with your dog and it understanding what you're trying to communicate yeah right if there's always pressure what are you communicating they're under the gun gun to the back of the head but it should be you feel no pressure or when I want to communicate you now you feel pressure yeah right um but it goes to when I was working in the casinos I had uh I told somebody to do something a certain way and they go they go well I've been doing this for 20 years you're saying I've been doing it you know oh she goes what did she say I said to do it she goes well I've been doing it this way for 20 years I said doesn't mean you've been doing it right for 20 years I told her yeah which is but just because someone you saw somebody do something now you've been doing it that way again it doesn't mean you've been doing it right yeah not to say that everything I do is right but the more I train the more I learn from people the more I you know get better at what I do monkey see monkey do is less dangerous with a pet quality dog obviously it might take you on a detour where there might be a better way to do something but I think the the stakes in the game are a lot less when you're dealing with like a less drivey dog a dog that's not showing risk or has dangerous Tendencies the monkey sea monkey do becomes quite elevated in in Risk when you have a dog that you're real when there are tight tolerances there's tight timelines time frames maybe the dog is on you know euthanasia row and you only have so much amount of time and maybe you push the dog too far or the dog does something you do something to the dog and it goes the opposite direction than you were expecting it to go I think that's where I mean realistically like it's not that you know you can't buy a Michael Ellis video and try to do some things that you learn off of that we're not I don't think that's what we're saying here I think we're saying when you learn something learn the why I think that's the the message we want to convey to to people's learn the why learn the and learn the appropriate why too right if possible yeah you have to do that stuff you I love all the Michael Ellis videos right

um and you have to do it but at some point you have to go deeper and see why it's happening and the reason why and this is what BART and Michael say in their silver school is you will always be confronted with a dog that brings you back to I know nothing about dogs that there will always be a dog someday down the road if you haven't encountered that dog yet there will always come a time where there will be a dog that makes you think I know nothing about dogs because it you exhaust every every other option that you knew how to in order to train a dog but now you're stuck with no other no other ideas and now you have to go back to the drawing board and draft up a new plan and if you get to that point follow me or Jason yes send us questions send us your questions uh comment on this podcast and we we'd love to hear your thoughts we've had some great interactions comments questions engagement we love it please uh like share subscribe and uh tell your friends about this if this has been helpful to you let let other people know um we're we're out here to try to bring Shine the Light on subjects in modern dog training in Nao that don't see the light of day that they deserve or that they that they that they need to maybe maybe not because they aren't mentioned but maybe because there's just not enough time or maybe just just for whatever reason right but we're trying to uh help your Journeys be a little bit more smooth than our Journeys have been if we do that I think we've done a good job yeah that's I mean one of the purposes of learning from people is so that you don't make the same mistakes right but sometimes you do you have to make you have to make the mistakes to really learn them but if you've already learned what the mistakes can be you can you'll notice them right away when you make them adjust about that can I say for me the thing that was probably the most pivotal point in my time becoming a dog trainer was when I got bit in the face by a by about an 85 pound malinoa and not to go off into the Weeds about that story but what that did for me and it wasn't there was no fault to my own own right like I was being very safe um there were some uh some issues with the Handler having been under the influence of uh substance that I was not made aware of at the time but um I got bit in the face two lacerations on my cheekbone one under the chin um it was a about an hour and 15 minute drive to the nearest emergency room um at at midnight on a on a Friday or I can't it was either a Friday or Saturday nights it was a weekend and that was the most that taught me so much in that moment and not that I didn't know to be

careful about dogs or respect dogs before that because absolutely I did I was using proper equipments um in training and but it gave me the respect I needed for being in front of things that were capable of you know something that I didn't know what they were capable of yet and now knowing that I just have a different respect I have a different Outlook I take things a lot more seriously you have a different perspective if you've been bitten yeah it's it's different grabed your clothes and ripped them it's very different it's very different and and it it in every it affected every aspect of being a dog trainer for me it makes you think about what again going back to consequences what are your actions what consequences are going your actions going to have with this particular dog yeah right you're always thinking like if I do use this tool on this dog what's going to happen and you're noticing paying attention instead of if you haven't been bitten you might not pay attention to certain things because you know you're just going along doing whatever I care more about certain things I definitely take more control and more responsibility in environments that I previously didn't I have a lot more requirements barriers to entry right if you want to work a dog in protection with me we're going to start out on a back tie to a back post I'm not going to trust your skills as a Handler until you've proven yourself to be a responsible and capable Handler and and that's that's also safe for the dog too right because again a dog that bites someone now is at risk for some you know uh some more aversive events to try to stop that action and so you know by avoiding that Al together creating safe scenarios for training the same like I remember like Bart saying if if you do bite work wear the pants also yeah right you have if you're just but I there's a you know I see people and the dog is not even back tied right and they're wearing the suit jacket but no pants no back tie there's no control in the dog and then they're like oh I know the dog I like it it doesn't matter that dog comes up and drrive for some reason he's just like his excitement gets the best of him or what if what if you trip what if you trip and you fall down and the dog misses the suit and grabs your leg because that's the only thing that was available you know there's so many crazy crazy things that can happen right you slip and fall you break an ankle the video the guy has like a clear shield uhhuh and he the dog comes over to the Coller trying I think he was trying to get the dog to go under right but the dog goes over and only because of his reflexes does not get his

face that looks like it didn't get his face where it it grabs his jacket right here but he leaned back and then you can't tell if he got his face but when he flips around the dog has the jacket there was another video like that three four years ago that's through the window there's the one through the window have you seen that one uh which tell me more about it I don't know if I it's like a wall it's got like a like a open window okay they send the dog through the window and the dog is right in I mean the man is right inside he's trying to give a bicep bite the dog it actually I don't know if it bit him but it definitely punched him it knocks some teeth out it oh yeah because it straight hit him right in the mouth and the guy flies back and then oh I sent you I think I sent you that video it's it's a European guy right yeah your guy yeah yeah yeah I that was yeah I think I sent that to you on Instagram but there was another video like the one except this was this one caused me to be like a little like gritting my teeth when I saw it because the the caption on the video was it was a suit like a ring suit decoy the dog was guarding the decoy and was barking and like really clacking in the face and the dog uh was told to bite and dog like Snapped like millimeters away from the the the young helper's face and the person on the video was claiming that that was Ultimate control over the dog and I'm like that's a Str like that's a Lucky Strike for the helper or the decoy not getting his face bit off because I mean that the dog was clearly committed to biting and he just barely missed him by by like a sliver and it's things like that it just makes you like oh that that's what's not good for the industry is trying to pass off that type of stuff as like oh this is Ultimate control that goes to monkey see monkey doo it is monkey see monkey do you see that right and then you you start trying to teach your dog to bark in a person's face or maybe even jump up and bark right and it's like H that stuff it's it's it's not needed yeah right and the dogs no matter how much training you have they're unpredictable I I don't even my dogs if they come put their face close to me I have a hand on their muzzle like I don't let them especially my doberman she she's looking at you she's like this she's looking at you she just goes for no reason she just like not she's trying to bite you but she's like yeah she just snapped like crazy dog I don't want her in my face well so what do you have going on um that the viewers should be aware of uh besides I think we've mentioned the October well we finally got the artwork for the October school
