Hey everybody! It's all about agility today. This is a live that, I mean, I love talking about dog training in general, but I'm really motivated because I just came home from the U.S. Open and I have not competed in dog agility in the United States before, I think July of this year I went to Houston. I used to be in the United States competing all the time and it was enlightening to share some of the insights that I had from being at the U.S. Open. I think it's the first major event I've been at since 2016 in the United States. Of course, I've been competing in here and in Europe. So I'm going to start everybody off with a question. First, let me know where you're from. Secondly, what skills do you believe are critical for all dogs to have success and agility? I mean, there's anomalies, there's dogs who can have success regardless of, you know, the skills they have. But if you were going to make a list, and I love seeing where everybody's from, so if nothing else, let me know where you're from. Let me know if you do dog agility. And what do you feel are the skills? I'm going to be writing them down as you're writing them. So, hi Robert from Austria. What skills do you believe are critical for any dog that is having, in order for any dog to have a success in agility? I'm going to preface this by saying I have had a lot of success with my dogs in the sport of dog agility. Every single dog I've owned since 1988, that tells you how long I've been doing this. I've been doing dog agility longer than I haven't in my lifetime. I'm 62 years old. I started competing when I was 28. So, we have people from Poland, Maine, Belgium, Scotland, Manitoba, Canada. Know nothing about agility, but I love recolors. Yay, recolors. So, Mary Mullet says the ability to confident in high drive, to be confident in high drive environments. That's a great one. So, to be able to tune out distractions. From Florida, Wisconsin, focus on the handler. That's another good one. I'm going to give you a spoiler alert. I've kind of grouped it into five critical skills, I think. So, focus on handler. To be able to, Sabine says, to be able to think clearly in high drive. I call that being thoughtful and drive. That is something that can be taught. It can be taught. Some dogs just have it naturally, but very few. Hello from Italy. One of my favorite places to go to, by the way. Understand what the job is. So, to understand what the job is, how to keep calm at ringside. I don't know, Jillian, that that is absolutely necessary to be success and agility. It might be helpful for you. I'm only saying that

because I have yet to have a dog that's calm at ringside. Allison, how are you? Allison from Australia right there. Ability to be calm right after high drive. Yes, to turn it on and turn it off. Know when you are on and when you are, you know, this is the time to chill. They must be read. Dan Shaw, 100%. Must be read. They must be read dogs. Not true. I love me my read dogs. I have momentum here because she, you know, momentum doesn't get to do as many demos now that I have profit in and busy. But I brought momentum out to do demos today. So, Dan shares they must have value for the game. 100% confidence in the obstacles. Value for the game. The one and only Dan Shaw, my friend from England, who is an iconic agility figure in not just his home country, but worldwide. He's iconic. The man is iconic. Value for the game. And that's a really important one because if they have value for a game, they can grow value for the game. Some really good things here. So, self-controls from Falling Waters, West Virginia. Kitty, I didn't know you were there. I just drove through West Virginia. Actually, I think we stayed overnight in West Virginia. So, self-control, obstacle focus. Focus. Ah, Mary Mullet says focus forward. That's a really good one. So, oh, hello from Denmark. You know what? If I was, if somebody said today you must move to a country and you can no longer live in Canada, it could possibly be Denmark where I would, you know, that's the joke around the house because I love Denmark and the government of Denmark is encouraging everybody to eat a vegan diet over there over the next five years. So, let's give them. So, I want you guys to keep answering this question. What skills do you believe are critical for all dogs who have agility? And I'm going to share with you. I believe there are two ways to have success in agility. And Dan Shaw, who is on here, represents, I don't know if Dan's still here. He represents the one group and I'm going to represent the other group. There are two ways for a handler to have success in agility. This isn't including, the five critical skills are great for both of them, but there's two ways. And when I was at the U.S. Open, I saw, and let's just say in the class I was running in, I think there was about 330 dogs in the class that I was running with this, my young dog this, and with momentum. And I would say maybe 3% would be in the class like Dan Shaw, and the rest would be in my class. So, what is the split of, there are two paths that agility handlers can have to have consistent success in dog agility. Number one, the number one group that

maybe is 3% of the handlers, you have to be able to outrun your dog. So, I think Dan Shaw is a great example of people who can outrun his dog. There's a lot, there's a lot, not the majority. I would say at the U.S. Open, maybe 3% of the handlers there could outrun their dog. And I mean with a dog that's running as fast as they can. Now, it might be easy to outrun a dog who's sniffing their way around the course and wants to go home and sleep on the couch. That dog maybe you can outrun. But I'm talking about if you have a dog who's doing agility as fast as they can chase a squirrel, squirrel speed agility, and you can outrun them, I tip my hat to you, that's not me, it has never been me. In my dreams, it's me, but it's never happened. All right? So, that's one way for handlers to have agility success. That's not the way I have ever had agility success because I've never been able to outrun my dog. Let me know if you, in the comment section, have a dog who runs as fast as they can and you can outrun them. Let's see if the split here is 95% or 98, 97% cannot and 3% can. Your dog's running as fast as they can and you can outrun them. Is that you? That is not me. So, let me know in the comments if that is you. The other 97 or more percent of the people cannot outrun their dog. So, how do they get agility success? They get it by the investment of the skills necessary for the dog to be able to do agility with you very far behind them. Now, when I was, I'm going to share with you a course from this weekend. I'm going to put it up on the screen and I'm going to walk you through it and I'm going to tell you that this course got a lot of flack, a lot of angry people that were behind the screen watching. They said, this is a horrible course. The judge shouldn't have designed it. There were two, there's no way anybody could handle it. And so, I'm going to share with you what this course looks like. And I'm going to also share with you that, did Momentum run this course? I don't think Momentum got to run it. Oh, yes, she did. I can't remember. I think both of my dogs have five faults, but they got around it. It was beautiful. I loved running this course. I'm going to set this course up. I'm going to share, I got a picture of it and I'm going to share it with you. And I'm going to tell you what it looks like, what these obstacles look like. Okay. So, here is the course. And it was designed by Tanner Dogen. All right. So, here's the course. The red lines are one way you could get your dog around. So, you see, they start at jump number one.

They go to the backside of two. And you could go to the left to get to number three, as most handlers did. I went to the right, got my, excuse me, most handlers went to the right. I went to the left, up to the A-frame and then around. Now, here's where the struggle began. Because if you were between nine and 10 as a handler, your dog has a straight line to the weave poles, but you are going to be somewhere near the A-frame and the dog's going to turn around and go, I don't get you. Let me share with you that the vast majority, not the vast majority, I would say a third of the class were eliminated before they got to the A-frame. So, before obstacle number four, 25% easily of this class was eliminated already. Right? And the course, you know, you got the dog in the weave poles. And if you were down at the weave poles, the dog only had one jump at a straight tunnel. And where are you? So, it's a course that required some skills that maybe not everybody had. So, I'm not going to walk you through this entire course. You can freeze frame it and look at it. But I'm going to share with you why I think it was a struggle for a lot of people. All right? So, if you can outrun your dog, handling becomes a lot easier. It becomes a lot easier. That was, yes, Molly, that was a course from the US Open. I loved running the course. I love, I mean, it would be nicer to be challenged in your own home. When you go, you travel 18 hours in a car to get to an event. And you would prefer that that's not where you are challenged. I can turn this light on. I can turn the light on. There. Ta-da. But that always happens. World Championships, I get challenged with things that I'm like, I don't know if I got this. I'm going to try my best. So, that is where you really want to have some form of the five critical elements that I'm going to share with you. So, what are those five training skills that I think makes agility, it makes it easier to have consistent success? Number one is it's this foundation. Dave, and Shaw referred to it, that the dog loves the game. It's a foundation of connection and joy. So, with my dog, Thisi, who's three years old, I would say for the first 18 months, close to two years, we did not have connection and joy in the sport of agility. So, I didn't train her to do agility. I did one jump. I did some grids. I tried to get her to tuck. I did a lot of things. I'm not going to move forward with my training and introduce coursework when my dog is clearly telling me by the way that she's going about her work, that she has no joy, very little joy,

and there's very little connection. So, number one is value for the game, connection and joy, that the dog has a love of what they're doing. And that will allow you now to do things like, number two, Mary Mullet picked on this one. It's focus forward. I want a dog that locks on a path. I don't want a dog looking at me when I'm running agility. Because remember, I'm in the 97% that can't outrun my dog. So, if my dog's looking back at me, there's going to be some spinning involved, probably some bouncing off of me, maybe some barking at my face. I don't want that. I want my dog to just lock on the line and do the obstacles, run the path. And so, that's a second critical skill. Focus for the path. It starts with focus forward on the first obstacle and they keep their head down and just run the path that I'm cueing. All right. So, number three is drive and value for obstacles. And it could be anything of value. So, I'm going to get my puppy out and I'm going to show you in a second. Does the puppy have focus for what I want them to have focus for? And does the puppy have drive for what I want them to have focus for? So, focus and drive for what I want. But that leads me to number four. They also have to have focus and drive for me. So, if they're running towards something, maybe I miscued it. Hopefully, that never happens. That if my body turns, that they're going to drive and turn off of the obstacle. All right. And number five is the one that I think was the biggest thing lacking at the US Open is verbal override. And it's one that people find difficult. They say, motion is the king of all agility cues. When you're running, your dog is just going to follow your body. When you're in the 97%, there's something called verbal override. It doesn't matter what my body's doing. If I give you a verbal cue, I have trained it such that the verbal cue overrides me doing something in opposition to that. So, those are five skills that verbal override is the thing that I think people are missing. And here's why I believe it is. And this is just my opinion, guys. This was my, I watched hundreds and hundreds. I don't know how many dogs were entered at this event. If somebody knows, write it in the comments. I know in my class, the 20-inch regular, there was 340 dogs or something like that. But there was, I think, eight or nine other classes. So, like there's 24-inch, 22-inch, 16-inch, 10-inch, or 12-inch. And then there's, so, so, I observed these dogs. And here's what I've observed is the confusion at

what people believe they've trained. So, if you've believed you've trained your dog to know something, but the dog is showing me that what you think you've trained, they don't know. And here's what I think. Back in, I don't know, 10 years ago, I created this program, Handling 360, and it was about cueing paths. People thought we had lost our common sense because we were using sounds to cue a dog to a path. And let me show you what I mean by that. All right, I'm just going to pull up a picture. So, if this is, if this is where a lot of dogs went off course on this course. So, obstacle number one, they had to go to the back of obstacle number two. But if, if you have a cue for your dog, obstacle is a jump. Take the jump. There's, look at all the different things they can do after the jump or before, like as they're coming into the jump. There's like, do you want me to take the jump and go straight? Why don't we take the jump and turn to the right, turn to the left, go to the backside, to the right, go to the backside. There's so many things that the dog can do. When you've taught a dog, this is a jump. When I say jump, go over that. That is what we were doing in 1988. That is not what handlers who are in the 97% should be doing today, my friends. People, those of you in the 3% that are going to outrun your dog, you and your bad staff, you can just rock right on. But if you listen to me, you'll be even better. I believe there are people like me, 62 year old ladies who can't outrun their dog are still competitive at the top of agility because we will take the time and invest in cueing dogs to understand paths. There are people in this world that are in the 3% that also invest their time in cueing the verbals of cueing paths. Those people are unbeatable. They're just unbeatable. And it's getting to be more and more common, but most people don't understand what that means. And that's what this live is about. This is why I'm like, I'm coming back here. And my team picked this, um, when this gem from Holly, she said, my gem is the people from Susan and her team to every person that is active in the forums and the Facebook group. The program is incredible, but the people are what takes it to the next level. We are all each other's positive interrupters. We challenge each other to think outside the box and comfort each other times of struggle. I wouldn't be the trainer nor have the dog I have today without the people behind the program. 'Be Kind' 스티커 세 장과 터그 놀이 장난감을 공유 이벤트 상품으로 드립니다. 그리고 마지막에는 젬(gem) 당첨자를 뽑아서 또 다른 경품을 드릴 예정이에요. 좋습니다. 지금까지, 댓글로 알려주세요. 이해가 되시나요? 장애물을 큐잉하는 건 단순히 점프를 시키는 게 아니에요. 이해가 되시나요? 제가 여러분께 제 개를 위한 큐잉 경로에 대해 더 배우고 싶다고 했던 게 말이에요. 아시다시피 제가 5가지 핵심 요소 중 첫 번째를 말씀드렸죠. 그런데 안타깝게도 사람들은 지역 어질리티 수업에 가면 장애물만 봅니다. 오 세상에, 난 장애물을 하고 싶어. 어질리티를 하고 싶어. 하지만 그게 전부는 아닙니다. 다른 단계들을 준비하지 않으면 결국 본인이 하고 싶은 것만 충족하게 될 겁니다. 저에게는 어질리티를 하고 싶은 욕구가 있지만, 여러분의 반려견은 어떤가요? 그건 강아지의 즐거움을 통해 나타납니다. 앞서 말씀드렸듯이 제 반려견 디시는 저와 함께 작업할 때 새를 쫓을 때만큼의 즐거움을 보여주지 않았습니다. 여러분께 짧은 영상을 하나 보여드리려고 합니다. 마음이 아픈 영상이기도 하죠. 대략 90초 정도 되는 영상인데 디시의 삶이 어땠는지 조금이나마 엿볼 수 있을 겁니다. 제가 힘들었다는 말이 아닙니다. 저는 그저 제 반려견이 삶 속에서 기쁨을 느끼길 바랄 뿐이니까요. 그게 제가 항상 노력하는 부분입니다. 자, 이건 짧은 영상 클립입니다. 미국 오픈 대회에서 뛰었던 장면들이 담겨 있는데 영상을 즐겁게 봐주세요. 지금 바로 공유해 드리겠습니다. 반응적이고, 겁이 많고, 위축된 상태라는 말들이 현재 세 살 된 제 보더콜리를 묘사하는 표현들이었습니다. 디시는 정말 모든 것을 두려워했어요. 특히 바가 떨어지는 소리에 겁을 먹었죠. 훈련을 하다가도 이탈하곤 했습니다. 보통의 보더콜리라면 12~15피트 정도를 활기차게 뛰었겠지만, 디시는 겨우 8피트 정도밖에 뛰지 못했습니다. 생후 18개월 때 우리 건물에서 열린 세미나에서조차 디시는 산만했고 저와 교감하려 하지 않았으며 앞으로 나아가려 하지 않았습니다. 터그 놀이에는 전혀 관심이 없었죠. 하지만 1년이 조금 넘은 지금 우리는 이곳에 있습니다. 이번 주말에 디시는 미국 오픈 대회에 출전했을 뿐만 아니라 아주 훌륭하게 해냈습니다.

Does this make sense to you that I asked you that I would like to learn more about queuing paths for my dog? And, you know, I said, there's the five keys, the first key. And this is unfortunately, when people go to a local agility class, all they see is the obstacles. Oh my God, I want to do obstacles. I want to do agility. And that's not it. You've got to, you've got to put in those other layers or you're going to be, you're going to be fulfilling what you want to do. I have the desire to do dog agility, but what is your dog's desire? And it's showed by their joy. And so, as I mentioned off the top that, um, my girl, thisy didn't show the joy that she did chasing birds when she worked with me. I'm going to share a little, uh, video with, with, with you all. Um, that's, it's like a sick with me. I think it's like a 90 second video that gives you a little glimpse into what life was like for this. And I'm not saying life was like for me because all I want is my dog to have joy in their life. And so that's what I always work towards. And so this is a little video clip. It's got some runs from the U S open in here. Um, but enjoy this video. I'm going to share it with you now. Reactive, fearful, and shutdown were words that people might use to describe my now three-year-old border collie. This, thisy was afraid of everything really afraid of bars falling. She would leave work where a normal border collie would bounce maybe 12 or 15 feet. She could only bounce eight, even in our own building here at a seminar as an 18 month old dog. She was distracted. She wouldn't engage with me. She wouldn't move forward. She had zero interest in tugging. And here we are now, just over a year later. And this weekend, she not only competed at the U S open, she thrived at the U S open.

The U S open, she had six years to figure it out. as a matter of fact she qualified to go to the uk i invitational she was in she her highest placement was 11th in her challenging challenger round she placed in the games combined she was 17th this is from a dog who was 10 seconds behind the fastest dogs when we came out at the beginning of this year and and now she's down to four seconds behind those fastest dogs and we're still we're still growing and and she isn't really even even giving all that she can just yet and so i wanted to share with you that number one don't give up on your dogs number two help them to find value in the game and when you with this e why did why could she do all those things even with me behind is because the clarity of the path of teaching her the understanding of the path of teaching her those five critical things that the the focus forward the value for my handling the value for the obstacles the value for um for my verbal overrides all right those are those are things i'm going to just do a little bit with a puppy to help help you understand that that's that's what we want is that will you do these i'm gonna i'm gonna demonstrate those five keys what it looks like with a i think he's 20 weeks old now 20 week old puppy what does that look like all right so i'm going to just change my camera again so that i can go oh oops there we go all right and minty can you might have to put hers so that she can get quick cookies for being a good girl mister mister mister where did you here's the toy okay so i'm going to put that up there you guys can see me get a stick all right so i'm going to do this in a way hopefully that you guys can see what we're what the puppy is doing so uh i'm going to put this toy down my and sit so that you can see him focus that could be a tunnel that could be a jump bring me yeah there we go good so he he has that we're starting to focus forward now i could put something else down let me just say a garbage barrel he just started to learn how to circle something so let me grab a garbage barrel and i'll bring out my garbage barrel out here can i have my tang and let's see can he look on that yeah so he's good focus on that wrap wrap wrap yay good boy we just learned that well we've not done it maybe two weeks ago we we learned started learning that but because he understands focus on things now what about so that's focus on objects focus forward what about my body in agility mine you have to follow my body if i do a front cross you have to follow my body that way if i want to do a surf you have to get

be better for that because agility nation we have a lot we have so agility nation there's four topics a month so every monday a new topic opens up and so the the first one is like short sequencing sequencing that you can do in a small place we call it backyarding and then the second one is a workshop that i present on a new topic every month and and it gives you things that you can take action with you know you want to my dog keeps popping the 10th pole well here's a bunch of drills that we're going to do it's a lot of dog training in that workshop the third week in agility nation is um body work and that is where we'll give you most often it's a new fitness exercise for your dog that's related to agility um sometimes it's for puppies and sometimes it's for humans and then um then there's a um what what am i missing then there is uh behind the scenes that is one that we will do where i i share something that i do i do that on the fifth week and um we did body work am i missing one backyard in there trust me there's something new that comes out every month or every week um i'm put on the spot here and i don't remember okay um next question are there specific words that you use or did the change so just like to teach a dog sit when you say sit you don't expect your dog to lie down do you so there are specific words five minute trainer of course that's where i put in myself or or somebody else from around the world we have some amazing great trainers that have contributed to agility nation that they put in a little game that they like to play to bring clarity to a part of agility um and so now i forget what the question was oh so just like when you teach a cue sit or down or come it only means one thing so when i tell my dog one cue for agility it only means one thing so if i say jump it means power as hard as you can over that jump do not even think about turning just go as hard as you can towards the next obstacle you can 100 count on the obstacle you see after the jump is what you're going to take which is why when i said jump to momentum she knew without a doubt that that tunnel would be next so i said jump and then i said tunnel but i could have said shoot which would have meant go into the the holy thing but you're going to be turning on the way out yes jasmine we also have um a complete education of how i teach my running contacts absolutely um next question which program is best to work on engagement to connect on an agility course handling 360 for sure because click the engagement from your dog comes from you as the handler having

100 confidence what you're doing now so we teach you number one how to teach your dog these unique words that that have meaning to them and then we teach you how to handle your way around so that you guys work together as a team handling 360 is uh there's nothing like i mean i guess i'm biased but there definitely is no other course out there that will give it all to you in one course so handling 360 before agility nation yes agility nation i'm doing them together here's the advantage of doing them together is that while you're learning the handling you could be working on like your seesaw if you have a dog who has never done a seesaw we give you how to build it from the ground up oh momentum like that word if you have a dog that's afraid of the seesaw we have a way of how to troubleshoot that if you have a dog that you've never trained meatballs to then we teach you how to do all of that so so yes you can do both but if you have to pick one i would definitely start with a handling 360 because it that's where you get the what i'm doing with the puppy once you have what i'm doing with the puppy um and then we put that over the jumps and in the tunnels and then you're well on your way um okay do you have a start cue or is the cue for the way so i'm um my dog out of the crate i'll say break but when i release them at agility i give them the cue for the path so i will say the path they're going so is it take this obstacle and turn take this obstacle and turn super tight take this obstacle and go straight so um that's what i do don't have access to equipment barbara most of the training for handling 360 is done in the first three classrooms you can do it in your living room you can do it in we suggest like you can buy well for the first two classrooms you don't need any equipment because it's all about building that connection and foundation in the games that build drive and control and then it would be you need one jump and you can make a jumper there are a lot of inexpensive places you can buy a jump you can use a jump in your living room for a lot of what we're going to teach you we have people who have gone through our program who had no we had a woman who went from recalls to handling 360 with her beagle mix who had never seen agility before and she ended up training um her her dog levi oh my gosh he was amazing he was so well trained how's tater he is amazing he's in the house i i i was gonna use him yesterday maybe he'll come up for tomorrow's live but um tater salad is 100 fine 100 fine and 98 um will h360 train warm up and recovery for activity it we definitely have that
