I think it snowed for like six days, six weeks straight here. Um, it's a little bit mixed with rain today, but I'm not here to talk about the weather. Let me know when you're on. Yesterday I put up a post that I was hoping would stimulate discussions about reinforcement. It's simulated discussions. All right. I got new friends and I say the word friends with air quotes. Um, I got a lot of people who, um, are very adamant about my lack of credibility as a dog trainer. Everyone's a right to their opinion. So I think, I don't know. I haven't looked recently. There was between eight and 900 comments on the post I made yesterday. And it was in response to somebody asked me about, have I ever trained a, um, severely aggressive dog? Um, and on the following post, which I hoping we could have a discussion about reinforcement. I would, if I had to guess ballpark three or 400 comments were from balance trainers and way over 50% of those were saying, show us your work with an aggressive dog. And I'm like, why, why, why if aggress aggression is what? What 1% of the dog training. Most dog trainers do. Unless you specialize in aggression, of course. But let's just say you are a dog trainer who specializes in aggression. You have your own dogs. My question on the post before was if you guys are who use aversive tools, such as I'm not saying a lesion collar can't be aversive, aversive tools, such as a electric collar, a prong collar, a grot. If you all talk about their, their significance in dealing with aggression, which I personally don't agree with, but that's okay. We can disagree. My question in the previous post, which got me crickets was if you think they're so important for aggression, then why do all these haloed dog trainers that use e-collars, prong collars and grots still use them on their adult dogs? Why, if they raise those dogs from a puppy, do they need them? So that was a question that never got answered by anybody. So then I thought, let's open up this discussion about reinforcement. Silly me. Yikes. Honestly, I don't know that I'm going to be part of the discussion anymore. Many times I was told to stay in my lane. I have a bachelor's degree in animal science. I have studied animal psychology. I've studied animal behavior. I think that's a big part of why I'm a successful dog trainer, because I believe that the emotional state of the dog is a big part of training dogs and creating safety for those dogs. And so I choose not to use tools like a grot or when I have used a prong collar. I will give you that when I was a balanced trainer. And I was a very good balanced trainer.

I was one of the best, most successful competition obedience competitors in the nation, as well as agility. But I'm not about I'm not here to brag. I'm here to say there were some people I banned from this conversation. I welcome you to believe I'm wrong because I question every day. Are my theories and beliefs right? Why do I question that? Because it innovates my thinking. It allows me to come up with new strategies of reinforcement. reinforcement. So it's funny how I acknowledged in the first post, not an expert of aggression. I have I have dealt with aggression. I have helped students overcome aggression. I know of all kinds of case studies that have aggression that have been overcome without the use of electric shock collars or prongs or whatever. And I did offer to dig some before and afters up for people. But honestly, I think we're at the point where I could walk on water and it wouldn't be a good enough proof. So I think if you are 100% convicted of your beliefs that dogs need electric collars, as much as I am 100% convicted of the fact that they don't. Maybe there is no common ground. Maybe I was stupid to put up a post to think we could have a simple discussion about reinforcement because it got disrespectful very, very fast. And let me just on a side note, say, I don't know that you could own dogs for as long as I have without either creating aggression in your household or working to solve it. So in my household at one time, I had three intact Jack Russell Terriers. One of them was the U.S. national champion go to ground. So feral, feral. And so, yeah, there there are discussions that we had to solve in a way to create harmony, as there is even with my border collies. The rescue bulldog mix that we brought in. He was a year and a half, just shy of a year and a half. His way of communicating was biting. Can you get off the couch? No bite. Can you come over here? No bite. Can I touch your, can I do your nails? No bite. No bite. He was completely rehabilitated without the use of a prong collar, a shock collar or any choke chain or anything. So do I use treats with my own dogs when they're grown up? Of course. Do you get a paycheck when you go to work? Yeah, my dogs. I love them. Do you feed your dogs every day? Why not use that as currency for building a behavior that you love? So they got to eat. But that's not the only reinforcement I use. Honestly, the hardest behaviors to solve or overcome, I almost never use treats with. behaviors that are feeding a dog's natural instinct to chase, for example. With when I'm growing that, I don't use treats.

I mean, initially teaching a recall away from distractions, I do. But that's not the reinforcement that's going to move the needle for my dog. So you've got to know each dog. As many people like to say, not all dogs are the same and they all need different methods. 100%. Oops, I'm not drunk. It's really deep snow. But that doesn't mean some dogs need e-collars. Tater salad the bulldog was not going to respond to the training that my high drive border collies was going to respond to. Ever. And to go into training thinking that, it's just crazy. But that doesn't mean tater salad the bulldog needed violence. And I'm really, I know the word violence just triggered everybody who uses tools, aversive tools. I know. Let me just tell you a story. You can take any tool and make it be innocuous at some level to a dog. So I'm going to tell you a story. We used to teach pet dog classes here. Oh, this is going back a long time. 1998, 1999. And it was puppy classes. There were two levels of puppy classes that I did that were amazing and fun. Including teaching them scent work. And it was amazing. So I knew after these two levels of puppy class. Maybe there was three levels. My memory's not that clear about it. After these puppy classes, these young adolescent dogs had to go to another school around here. Back in the 90s, that meant they were going to get a chain collar or a prong collar put on their neck. So for the last three weeks of puppy class, of these puppy classes, I taught the puppies to think a pop on their collar, a pop on their neck was something fun. Here's how I did it. Here's how I did it. Here's how I did it. By then they were tugging really, really well. And we played smack the baby. Where the puppies, you know, you have rough house with them. You smack them in the shoulders. And then while they were tugging, we would do just a light tug on a flat collar. And I would tell people, if the puppy dropped the toy, you're tugging too hard on the collar. And we would build up tolerance until they could really pop those puppies in the neck. I taught that. Why did I teach that? Because I knew those dogs were going on to another school where they were going to be popped, lured and popped around. And I wanted them to be okay with that. So I know you can take an electric collar and condition the dog to think it's fabulous. I personally don't believe that makes it okay. And I would guess probably 90% of the people who use an electric collar are using it abusively. And the people that might be using it correctly, where the dog isn't yelping, the dog isn't showing stress. How did those people get there?

They got there through experience. That experience is by making mistakes at the expense of the dogs they were training at the time when they didn't have the experience. When they weren't that 10%. So I'm walking the dogs and I just thought, I can't put up another post that gets misunderstood and I'll just do a live. And do people think that I should only talk about agility because I'm an expert of agility? The reason I'm an expert of agility is because I'm an expert of reinforcement. That being an expert of reinforcement has allowed me to own all of the dogs that I've owned. I don't know, 15 dogs over the last 30 years. And never have a dog have to go to the vet because another dog in the household targeted them, did them wrong, whatever. Another stat that I will share. Because I'm an expert of reinforcement, I have never owned a dog that didn't achieve elite status in the sport that I was playing. That didn't get to the world championship. That didn't represent Team Canada at the world championships. Or didn't win a U.S. Nationals or a Canadian Nationals title. I've never discarded a dog. Every dog that has come into my house has gone on to be one of the best in the world at what I do. And it's not because I'm an expert of agility. It's because I'm an expert of reinforcement. Because there are dogs that go to people who are experts of agility that shine. But not every dog is going to shine with somebody who's an expert of agility. Because the dogs, like my dog Vissy, will never shine unless you're an expert of reinforcement. A dog like my terrier Decaf. She was a terrier mix. Three quarters Jack Russell. She was never going to shine. She had fear aggression from nine weeks. Attacked a puppy in puppy class at nine weeks. She was never going to shine with an expert of agility. So my lane isn't agility. Those of you who want me to tell me to stay in my lane. My lane is reinforcement. And that's why I tried to open a civil dialogue about reinforcement. That 400 people asked me to show my work on 100 pound working aggression dogs. 30 years ago, had God steered me to a lane of working dogs with aggression, I would be an expert of aggression. But I'm here to say I am not. But that doesn't mean I can't help anybody with an aggression problem because of my understanding of reinforcement. So, um, didn't you, Top Dog Training Academy asked, didn't you talk about a dog you owner years ago would have benefited from a reverse of training? I remember you saying you had a small, you had, your dog had a small world due to the behavior. So I was talking about tater and that was on Ivan Belavano's podcast.

Alc. Alc와 Zaid.
And I said, my, my, my, I didn't state it. What I suggested, perhaps he might've had more freedom earlier on. He, you know, it probably took me two years. Never owned a bulldog before. Um, and he's not, he's Kim, he's Kim's dog, um, and my dog and mostly Kim's. But he lived here full time for straight for five years. Uh, prophet. Thank you. So. I believe that he could have got freedom earlier, but I wasn't. And Kim wasn't willing to put on an e-caller to give him freedom earlier. And here's, here's what, you know, for me, this is for me. And thank you for the respectful way you asked that question. When you seek to control a dog, you lose curiosity for the behavior that motivated the dog. And when you continue to have curiosity for how to motivate the dog, that's when what's possible in the world of reinforcement for all dogs just gets blown up. And that honestly, um, somebody who works here for me said, did you just put that post up to push buttons? And I said, I'm really sorry that it might appear that way. I genuinely put that post up yesterday about reinforcement. reinforcement to try to stimulate curiosity about reinforcement. Unfortunately, that wasn't the way it worked. Um, so. I'm sorry if I don't have your name right. Alc. Alc and Zaid. Uh, science. It doesn't care about your feelings. We're science-based trainers. Think field base. Um. So, somebody on YouTube today said, you know, if you would just take up, uh, some balance trainers challenge of training a, um, a rescue dog. Like everyone, we go to the shelter and he trains with an electric collar and you train your way and let's see what dog's the best. I don't know what it was. And I said, and he said, think of how many people that you could help. Honestly, I said, I believe the greatest value I can be of help with is to help people prevent aggression, to help people how to raise puppies or rescue dogs so that they have a fulfilled life. That they don't get into problems because of inadvertent reinforcement in the wrong direction or because of not noticing signs that they might have noticed earlier. And honestly, I, having gone through those 850 comments, deleting some very disrespectful ones. Um, I honestly think. That I could, I am walking on water. I'm walking in snow. So technically I'm walking on water. I could walk on water and the balanced community would still call me a fraud. And that is a very clear, um, message that they are not curious. And what I love is within those 850 comments, there were some genuine curious people. And, uh, I love that. And, um, and that's, you know, that's what I'm here for.

I, you'll notice dog trainers, uh, especially online that will build up a great community. Will honestly make a lot of money and then they'll kind of fade into the back. You don't see them anymore. You don't see them doing live events. You don't see them doing, uh, live streams. You don't see them answering comments because they've achieved what they want to achieve. They've got financial freedom. Honestly, I could have retired before I started online dog training. My former career, I was very successful. My late husband, uh, passed away and he was very successful. Why do I keep doing this? Because I believe in reinforcement-based dog training. And I believe if by some lightning strike from God, we could all have discussions, the world would be better for dogs. Because I am not going to stay, stand here and say balanced trainers are all terrible dog trainers. And I believe in a lot of dog trainers, balanced training, balanced training, balanced training has been in existence for centuries. You can't think that somebody who's raised in a methodology. Well, some of them are raised in some, like there's a lot of dog trainers that never change year to year. But you can't believe that the good ones, the really good balanced trainers, they have brilliant timing. They have great criteria selection and they know how to reinforce. Their dogs can look happy. It isn't what a lot of people like to picture it. That their dogs are scared and they live this stressful life. It's not true. So that's why I think we could have some awesome epic discussions. But I don't think it will ever happen. Because as I said in my pinned comment, if there isn't 100% psychological safety, true authentic conversations can never happen. And I don't know how it would be possible for them to feel safe in a world where force free trainers attack them. And I don't believe, and I know that I'm not safe going over there. Just check the comments on that post and you can see. Check the way Ivan Belobanov threw me under the bus in his comment section. And then invited me to come back on as a guest again on his podcast. And I said to him, Ivan, if you truly understood how reinforcement worked, you wouldn't be so disrespectful in your comment section. And then expect I'd like to come back to your home. Yeah, no. So I wish there was a way for us to have that conversation. And maybe we're not ready 2025. I will continue to be civil to people. I will continue to draw a line in the sand where I won't be disrespected. And I'll continue to help people in all of our social media for absolutely free.

Doing things like YouTube videos, podcasts, and these live streams. So if you are a balanced trainer and you're still watching or you are watching this video. If anything I have said here feels disrespectful or hurtful. Not my intention at all. But please, please don't ask me or don't say I'm not good enough because I don't know how to use an e-caller. That is a choice. That is a choice. I know how to drive standard. My friend does not want to learn how to drive standard. That doesn't make me a better driver. It's a choice. Stella says, I've had a lot of rehab cases and some were extreme examples of undesirable behavior and only ever used kind methods. They've all turned out right and had fulfilling, happy lives. Susan's methods work. Stella, that's beautiful. I would think some of the methodology that I came up with were through living with three intact female Jack Russell Terriers. The early stuff. And that was back in the 90s and early 2000s. But my dog training, I mean, that's more than 25 years ago. My dog training has evolved so much. But they're still based on some of those things that I did. The Togetherness Project, the Friendship Bed, things like that. And so when people say, Susan, show us your work. I got, I got, you know, when we were working with Tater Salad, I didn't have a film crew in the house. When I was, when I had those Terriers, I don't even know if I owned a, I had a video camera. I used to video camera, video my training. So I will, though. Honestly, I don't think it will be of any value. Have you ever heard that old expression? You don't need to justify anything because your friends don't need it and your enemies won't believe it. I'll throw up a few. I asked a couple of students of mine who are doing phenomenal work rehabilitating dogs without the use of any of the tools that are meant to create control. And also the five case studies or four case studies that I've asked for, those particular dogs, they just don't happen to believe in putting the dogs on any kind of pharmaceutics in order to rehabilitate either. So I just think they're interesting. I will share those. For those of you who are interested in the possibilities of rehabilitating a reactive or dog aggressive dog, I mean, some of the case studies that I've got, a dog was chained up in the backyard for a year and killed two cats and bit every family member, bit the people trying to foster, was supposed to be euthanized, now living a great life for the family. Three months of rehabilitation. Maybe that one was two and a half, I can't remember. So, it's so true, Carrie.

All dogs are doing the best they can with the education they've been given in the environment that they find themselves in. And that's why, like, whatever people, I want to say the word violently scream on the internet, somebody shared with me a post that came across their feed this morning. Susan Garrett is the biggest joke on the internet. I always wanted to be a comedian. When I was growing up, that was what I wanted to do. No matter what people violently scream, keep believing in your dogs. Keep believing what's possible because that's how we're all going to find a better way to having an amazing life with those dogs. And I honestly believe while we're doing that, we're finding a way to have an amazing life for ourselves. Because, I mean, you know we're all just energy. And when you lose your shit or grit your teeth, you're not helping yourself heal. You're not helping yourself become a better person. And you're sure as hell not helping a dog. Courtney says, I really didn't understand the show, the work either. You have thousands of clients that speak. You know what I could do? I could just take some of our recallers case studies and start spamming, spamming our feed with all of those. Because we've got some amazing, amazing turnarounds. So, anyway, I really appreciate all 138 of you that are on here live with me. And I will admit, just before I went to the gym this morning, I felt the need for a second meditation session. Kind of a detox for myself energetically. But I recognize that's a burden that if you put yourself out there in hopes of helping dog owners, you're not going to be everybody's cup of tea. And they're going to want to make sure you know it. And I believe some of the violent approaches in the comment section are a reflection of the way they treat their dogs as well. And so, could be off on that, but I think who you are, if you look at any of the comments that I wrote in reply, I mean, I think some of them maybe thought I was being sarcastic or provoking, but honestly, I've always just wanted to create conversation. So, I'm here for those who want it. Sarah says, I'm being told you don't understand the threshold of dogs who are trained to bite people on purpose. And when they make a mistake, injury can happen. Thank you, Sarah. I believe that there are dogs that are bred for all different purposes and when they are in that brain, that yes, it appears that nothing can break through. And so, what do you have if a cookie's not going to work? Well, you have systematic training that once you identify what your challenge is, you find, you work through this systematic training to come up with the solution to it. It's no,

you know, it's, it's like if you have a dog to go to my lane, a very high drive German Shepherd, Malinois, Border Collie, who has been trained to freaking love agility. They love agility and they're on the start line and they're quivering and then they just go. and eventually that dog just won't wait at the start line. How do you, how do you fix that? No, they don't want your cookie. They don't want your tug toy. How do you fix that? Oh, it's not possible, I guess. Well, then why is it that the last time my, one of my dogs broke a start line was 1994. My Jack Russell Terrier Twister. So, if you believe the solution absolutely is not possible, you shouldn't be on my channel. I 100% the solution is absolutely possible and that's why I joined a reinforcement based gun group. I have no intention of getting hunting dog but I love great conversations about reinforcement. I joined a reinforcement based fighty group. I just love great conversations about reinforcement. So, happy that you're all here. I love working in this community with positive people. I can't just tell you, I just can't put into words how grateful I am to be able to work with all of you. Whether you've ever joined one of our programs or not, I just love the energy that the, just the comment sections on these lives give me. So, I'm wrapping it up. Dogs are hungry. I'm a half hour past it. I didn't, I didn't, I didn't time. Okay, thank you guys. Have an amazing night.
