Are you ready? And you're building up anticipation. Ready? That something amazing is about to happen in my dogs. Now, this is your Aunt Susan, crazy Aunt Susan, giving you permission to buy more dog beds. And that's probably what every other dog trainer has told you. Get a bigger meatball. What happens during a time of frustration? You know, Wayne Dyer has got this great, great analogy. I just love it. He says, when you put pressure on a lemon, what comes out? Well, Dusty's in lemon juice, right? So, when something, an environment, circumstance puts pressure on you, what comes out? Because that is who's showing up for that puppy or that dog or the people of your life. I love the line from Wayne Dyer, and I've said it on my podcast before that, when you squeeze a lemon, all that can come out is what's inside and that's lemon juice. What comes out of you at times when you're pressured, that's what's really inside of you and examine that. No. Because is that what you really want to come out? And it happens behind a keyboard. It happens on a phone. Absolutely. I was on hold for so long today. But that's where we can show up at our best to our dogs is when we can show up that way to everybody. Your recall might be great on land, but a dog who loves to swim, that is a different kettle of fish. Pardon the pun because it was a really, really bad one. Is it really a pun? No. And why are fish in a kettle anyway? Things are going to go wrong. They're dogs and we're human. And so, potentially our mechanics isn't perfect. Potentially what worked with our last dog isn't going to work with this dog. But that doesn't mean we change the criteria. We don't change our goal. We change our strategy to get to that goal. And here's what I know for sure. I never let somebody's opinion limit me because their knowledge of saying this 15 week old puppy is leash reactive and will turn dog aggressive. And that's the way it is. That's accumulation of their current education, but their education does not need to limit your possibilities. Don't ever let anybody limit you or your dog. Speaker 1 If your reality is not what you're seeing in social media, it's discouraging. It's depressing. And it makes you wonder if you're doing the right thing, if you should even be bothering to do this. People show you everything's beautiful. The social media with the glam filters on, right? Don't look at the people and what they've accomplished and what you haven't. Look at where you were last week and give yourself grace and celebrate that. When I look at my dogs, all I see is greatness. To me,

my dogs are just unpolished diamonds and I'm the polisher. What I do, the choices I make help them to shine at their brightest. Don't ever define the dog by their limitations. Don't call them a scaredy cat dog, a shut down dog, whatever. You know, my friend, therapist, Elliot Connie, I've spoke about him in the past. And last week he had a meme posted to social media and it went something like this, your worth is not defined by others' opinion of you, but rather of your own self-perception. Now, you can take that and turn it into your dog. Your dog's worth is not defined by other people's opinion of them, but of your perception of them. No dog has ever surpassed the perception their owner has of them. You need to see your dog in the absolute best light possible for your dog ever to have a chance of shining their light. But as long as they're kept down, even by the energy, the toxic energy in the environment, they're never going to be who they could be. And that's a real shame. Now let's pick one of our, the assumptions people are making about dogs. All dogs are good with kids or all dogs are good with puppies. So that is the belief. Then when we see a dog snap at a puppy or snap at a child, what is our thought, right? Instantly we think that dog's being a jerk because all dogs are good with kids or all fill in the breed blank. All golden retrievers are good with kids or puppies. That dog is being a jerk. That's our thought. Our beliefs form our thoughts, guys. Now, our thoughts then create the emotion. If we think that dog's being a jerk, what is our emotion? Is it going to be like empathy and compassion? And no, it's going to be zero to what the actual, our emotion is anger. Our emotion is blame and judgment. Our emotion is you get on that and our, you know, if we might follow up with something else. So our emotion comes from our thoughts, which come from our belief. And what is our action after our emotion? We're going to get in there and we're going to listen. Listen, don't you ever snap at a kid again. That dog is bad and he needs to know it. Now, what's the results of that? Number one, the dog may learn to be afraid of you. The dog may actually learn to be more afraid of the child or the puppy because they don't like what happens to you when they snap or growl at the child or the puppy. Or you might get the dog to not snap at the child or the puppy, but have you changed the dog's motivation for snapping at the child or the puppy? You haven't, you've suppressed it. So it's a ticking time bomb. Maybe you've taken

away their opinion. You're not allowed to growl, keep those thoughts in your own head. But if you take away a dog's ability to growl, all they have left is bite. And so what would be a better approach to that? And I know a lot of you guys watching this, you're going to be on board with what I'm talking about, but we're going to go a little deeper in this. So stick with me, stick with me. Right? So if we change the way that we look at things, then the things we look at are going to change. So instead of us saying all dogs should be good with kids, what if we decided that all dogs are doing the best they can with the education their owners have given them in the environment that we put them in. So if we take a dog who we don't really know if they're good with kids or not, and we put them, we take them to like a kid, six year old birthday party where there's 30 kids screaming around and jumping, you know, air castles and jumping castles and all sorts of things. And they've not even shown that they're good with large groups of children or even one child. If we believe that our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them. Now we come back to that's our belief. Our founding belief is that our dogs are doing the best they can with the education we've given them. Now the dog growls or snaps at a child or a puppy. What's our thoughts? Holy crap. I had no idea you were that uncomfortable. Or if it's a dog that has had a long history of being great with kids or puppies. Holy crap. Are you in pain? Are you feeling sick to your stomach? Our thoughts are there's got to be something wrong. Our emotion is compassion and empathy and our actions are, I got to get you out of there. What have I done? How did I do that to you? The result is we keep our dogs safe and we plan what is our next action. Maybe get our dog to a veterinarian to see if they are hurt or if they're not feeling well. Maybe then go and see. I need to get a mentor or somebody to help me to counter condition this dog's fear towards children, puppies, whatever. Or I just need to manage this and not allow a puppy to jump on my dog's head. Not make my dog defend themselves around kids that are throwing things at them. Right? Do you guys see how assumptions, which are just our beliefs, how they absolutely are affecting not only our lives, but our dog's lives? Number one thing I want you to keep this goal in mind. Our job's always to protect and grow confidence, both our dogs and our own. I believe who we become when we train a dog is just as important as who that dog becomes.
