It's okay right now that your dog isn't taking food when there's bunnies around. You need to not try to train when there's bunnies around. This is the beauty of how we train. The effectiveness of dog training. And I believe it comes down to three things. And all three of those things have a million other things under them. I believe human mechanics is 50% of it. And the reinforcement for the dog is 30%. And the drive of the dog is 20%. Human mechanics are how you can be present to the training. How you can be able to effectively get the reinforcement to the dog without the dog doing other things in between. 30% is the reinforcement that we're giving the dog. Or that the dog's getting from their environment. And 20% is the dog. When I say drives, the drives is the drive for food, the drive for toy, the drive for wanting to work with man or woman. The intensity of the reinforcement is part the value. So it's what is valuable to the dog. The value is important. And it doesn't mean we always use the best value. It's the value to the dog in what's going on right now. Now we take that and we multiply that by your rate of reinforcement. The intensity of the reinforcement is what I mean when I talk about reinforcement has a 30% impact on the effectiveness of your training. So if we know that the intensity of reinforcement is the value of the reinforcement to the dog to the rate of reinforcement. What that all has underlying it is the value of the competing reinforcement. So what I'm going to do, I'll show you with Electra. This is a Siberian Husky who has not worked with me, who really I have no value. So I'm guessing she'll come out and maybe sniff the floor or look other places. I don't know what she's going to do. I hate to make a knock on Siberian Huskies because they're amazingly gifted, talented dogs. I have no relationship with this dog. So let's see how it's going to do. My goal is to do a collar grab. We'll see if she will look at me. I'm going to come out and I'm going to start with a lower rate of reinforcement and low value rewards for her. I'm going to put some good rewards in my pocket. The highest value rewards that we have here. I'm going to start with some lower ones. Okay. So I'm going to get Electra. She's sleeping. So I will have to add to the intensity of my reinforcement. Okay. So she got a little stretch. So I have got nothing. She didn't get reinforced for me. So now she's saying what? I don't really care about you. What's going on. This is probably typical what people's dogs are going to do. So grab the leash, cook, give her a cookie.

Grabbing the leash gives us an opportunity to evaluate the dog's temp. T-E-M-P. And if by grabbing the leash, their ears still stay up and their eyes are brighter and their tail stays up and they're like, this is good. Then that gives me permission to maybe grab a little lower and eventually grab the collar. What I found is when we went right for the collar, some of the dogs would back up and go, I don't feel comfortable with this game. And so if I grabbed the leash, that dog would show me signs of that lack of comfort by maybe pinning their ears. Or, you know, they wouldn't give me as dramatic a physical reaction as if I'd grabbed the collar. But they would show me enough that I would say, OK, we're just going to do a lot of leash grabs. And then the dog is going to, because we're conditioning. We're conditioning a positive emotional state in the dog. When that woman touches my leash, it's a good day for me. I get high intensity rewards. This is really, I like this. So then they're going to look forward to the leash grab, which means when you eventually go to touch the collar, it will be absolutely, you know, pleasant bill for them. They really are going to, they're not just going to not going to care. They're going to be excited by it. Yeah, that was OK. Thanks. What else you got? That was a lower intensity value cookie, right? And she is not really showing any interest. I walk around a bit. I had lower value reinforcement. And so she would like take it and then look around, sniff the ground. As soon as I went to a higher value reinforcement and I went to a higher rate of reinforcement. All of a sudden that husky was like, I'm your girl. I'm your girl. What are we doing? Thank you, Electra. Electra is a very well-trained dog, but she just doesn't know me. Right? Okay. Okay. Okay. Does that make sense? Do you see how that formula is going to help you? And what I hope most of all it's going to do, it's going to help you understand that it's never the dog. So the nuances are really what helps dogs learn faster when we can get the humans to understand those better. So the final thing, the qualifier, the thing that will make this great or not great, once we've got that intensity is your human mechanics. So you can have amazing value reinforcement and an amazing rate of reinforcement, but you drop the cookies or you're not present to getting the choice exactly right. So that's going to maybe lower it a little bit. So if you're 90% spot on, on your human mechanics, the intensity of the reinforcement to the dog is going to drop down a little bit.

So I've got really high intensity reinforcement and I'm giving a high rate, but the bunnies are winning. So what that all has underlying it is the value of the competing reinforcement. And that's why if we have 100% intensity, we've got great, great value. We're using steak and chicken and these balls that most dogs just love. So we have 100% in the value department. Yeah, 100%. And we're at a training class. And so there is, there is on a scale of one to 10, it's just a slightly distracting. If it's only slightly distracting, the intensity now of your reinforcement has dropped to, to just 50%, just 50%, on a scale of one to 10. So then if we, if we amp this up and we go to a dog park, now at a scale of one to 10, the competing reinforcement is a 10. There's dogs jumping each other. There's dogs whipping around. There's people throwing Frisbees for the dog. And your dog said, what was previously exciting to me no longer has any value. Sorry. Now multiply all that. What if you go to the dog park and all you have is belly button lint to reinforce your dog? You, you now have like, let's call it 0% chance of getting any kind of response from your dog of the dog park, that competing reinforcement is got to be as close to one as possible. And how do we get that when there's bunnies? This is the beauty of how we train is that we build for our dogs. What I like to call environmental neutrality. And what does that mean? That means that we train in a low environment or low distraction environment. And when we're training in our training den in that low distraction environment, what happens is the intensity of the value of the food can drop down. So it's the layers upon layers of the dog having success where the value of the environment is low. And then we do keep building and building and building on that. Right. And then I can go to any place where there's competing reinforcement. There might be, for example, fly ball is a new competing reinforcement for this. So although deer and bunnies no longer have any power for her, the other fly ball dogs do. And so I just have to go back to highest value intensity, but I'm going to lower the value of the distraction by getting further away from it. But I want you to understand it's okay right now that your dog isn't taking food when there's bunnies around. You need to not try to train when there's bunnies around. There's always an answer that comes back to us. Our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them in the environment that we've put them in.
