Hello, my name is Ed Frawley. My wife and I own Learburg. A few weeks ago we released a seminar that we filmed a number of years ago with Michael Ellis. Michael's one of the top dog trainers in the country, especially in biting dog sports. And we had filmed a seminar at Learburg on protection dog training. So we released this seminar. It was 14 hours long and it's been selling well. But this next clip that you're going to watch is a little talk that Michael gives that's in this seminar that we're releasing as a stream, not as an online course, not as a DVD. There's too much material there to put onto a DVD. But this talk is about when to introduce, when Michael introduces aggression into the training for young dogs. And usually that takes place between, you know, 10, 15, 16 months old. And it's a variable approach to it because it all depends on the bloodline of the dog. It depends on the temperament of the dog, the character of the dog, the history of the dog training. But we assume that the dog that he's talking about have been in training for a while. They've gone through the prey drive training. And at some point in their life they have to figure out this isn't a game anymore. Now it's going to be serious. You have to be careful how you do that. And I have a lot of experience in making mistakes over the last 50 years of doing it. And I just like the way that Michael words it. So if you're interested in any of the biting dog sports, if you're interested in training a young dog to be a police service dog, if you're in law enforcement, this is a good step because I hear a lot of people, a lot of police officers say, I got a puppy and I'm going to raise them up to be a police dog on our Sheriff's Department or our police department. And you know what? The majority of them don't grow up to be good police dogs. Or if they do, they don't deserve to be on the street because they didn't have proper development. And in this talk, we're going to talk about a little phase of that development. So I think you'll like it. But I think it speaks to the quality of training that's in this 14 hours of streaming video that we have. That's what is where I start doing some metered aggression work with the dog. So let's say a year to 18 months. As a wide window and it depends on the individual dog, depends on bloodlines, depends on all kinds of stuff. But let's say somewhere in there is where I start kind of doing aggression work. And aggression work is not necessarily defense. So one of the things that I like to do with young dogs

in that stage is I give them bites on hidden equipment. So I'll put on a hidden sleeve, a hidden suit under my pants, whatever. And I behave exactly like I normally behave as a decoy. I don't come out and threaten the dog like, okay, here we are. We're going to, I'm going to come out stalking out of the woods with nothing on and try to get my dog to bite me, my young dog. I'm going to go out on the field with my dog on a harness, just like I've done all the rest of my development. And I'm going to give the dog a bite on my arm with something, with a piece of equipment he can't see. And a little like the change of bite placement with equipment, it puts the dog in a different state of mind. He thinks he's biting me. Right? And, but I'm not necessarily threatening him. I may be acting in prey, but he thinks he's biting me. So there's a slight tweak in his nerve there and he gets a little stressed about it. And then I make sure he kills me. He just beats me up. He takes me to the ground. He thrashes me. I flop around. He murders me. Handler comes up, tells he's a good boy. We pry him off and yay. Right? So that's the beginnings of him figuring out that, oh my God, I don't need a big piece of external equipment to bite somebody. And we start to make again some man orientation without making the dog feel necessarily threatened. The other thing is that it tends to do is it raises thresholds again. So now if I have a lower threshold dog, that's really beneficial. If I have a higher threshold dog, sometimes what it allows us to do is allows us to manufacture a picture. Right? So in Schutzend, we want the dog to bark at the helper, but bite the sleeve. So by giving that dog a bite on the helper periodically, not on the sleeve, then I can make the dog orient towards the guy and bark more at the guy without actually making the dog feel threatened. So I can take a very, the same way that in obedience, we can teach the dog to look at our face when I have a toy in my hand. I can teach the dog to look at the helper when there's a sleeve present. One of the big problems we have in Schutzend is if we're not careful, the helpers are swinging the sleeve around, the dog's looking at and barking at the sleeve, and we're giving the dog bites for that. And when you're out at a distance, it's sometimes hard to see. The dog's looking towards you, and you don't realize they're staring right at the sleeve. You pay that, the next thing you know, you have a dog that's always looking at the sleeve or always over on the sleeve side. So we can

make a little bit of orientation towards the guy without putting the dog in defense. Now, if it's a high threshold dog that I'm going to want to use aggression later on to make that dog angry, to add some intensity to our work, then again, I don't want to do too much prey type hidden equipment work, because if I do too much of that, I raise his thresholds further, and then it becomes harder and harder and harder to put him in that state of mind, right? So for, again, depending on the dog, I'll do that. This is also the stage when I would start to introduce hidden equipment work a little bit, and potentially, depending on the dog, some muzzle work, right? And I use some muzzle work with the dogs because the same way I want the dog to know that he can control a bad guy through his voice, through barking, through biting. And here's one other way that you can teach a dog to confront somebody without being able to bite him, right? And it's empowering to the dog, right? And once the dog figures out, hey, I can knock this guy down and have an effect on him without biting him, even, that's empowering. So that's building for the dog. And again, some dog, it's going to be totally not necessary, and another dog, it'll be really, a really good experience. But I start to mess with the teenage dog in doing a little bit of this, right? Now, the dog has to be mature enough to feel like he's, he can, he can confront the guy and do this, because there is a threat. This is a little more directly confrontational kind of thing, right? And so, uh, the dog has to be mature enough to, to confidently see that. So what we're doing is, as the dog grows, we're kind of taking the dog's temperature the whole way along. How confident is this dog? How intense is he? And different things. And I need to, if my dog's still, at 14 months, acting really goofy and puppy-ish, and I, I'm not going to try to do this stuff with him. You're going to stress him. He's not ready. He's not mentally ready. But if you have a dog that's offering a lot of intensity and a little bit of anger and his frustration part, you say, oh, this dog's, you know, he's ready for it. We just need to make sure he feels like he's going to win. So then in closing too, I want to remind everybody that watches this, that we have a, uh, Ask Cindy portal on Learberg.com. You don't have to be a customer of Learberg to ask Cindy. And Cindy's my wife. She's a better dog trainer than I am, much better dog trainer than I am. And she answers all the questions. You have a training question, uh, a breeding question, uh, a behavioral dog question.
