Hey everybody. Welcome back to Shaped by Dog. I am Susan Garrett and I got a list of descriptors for you. Let me know if any one of them apply to your dog. Stubborn, spiteful, sneaky, aggressive, frantic, a psycho, stupid, slow, scaredy cat. He blows me off. He has his own agenda. He ignores me. Do any one of these adjectives or sentences, have you ever used them to describe your dog? I'm going to start by sharing a psychology experiment that was done by a Harvard professor back in 1964. And he went into a classroom. I don't remember the age of the kids. I think they were fairly young. He was doing this test and it was a basic IQ test, but it had this fancy Harvard cover on it. And he told them that the test would predict an intellectual explosion with these kids. And then he just randomly put the kids in groups and gave the teacher a group and said, Now these children here in your classroom, they're the gifted ones. And what he observed is that the teacher had a thousand different ways that she treated the group of gifted children differently. Things like how patient she was with allowing them to answer a question or how much she smiled at them or nodded at them in agreement when they were speaking, how much she encouraged them. All of these things were noticeable in her behavior. The belief loop, it starts with what you believe and what you believe actually alters or has impact on the thoughts that come to your head. Because if you have a belief, your brain is immediately going to give you all these reasons to support it, right? Like if you believe that, you know, you're brilliant, then your brain's going to say, yeah, remember you thought of this and this and this. So, it starts with a belief and then the thoughts. And then from those thoughts, your emotions come out. So, if you say, my boss is a jerk. If you believe your boss is a jerk, then your brain's going to be like, yeah, look at, look at, look what he's doing right now. He's just being a jerk. And now how are you going to feel when he comes around? You're going to be on edge. You're going to have your teeth clenched. You're going to be a little bit of, yeah, what do you want now? Maybe you won't speak in that tone to him because unless you had another job in your back pocket. But your beliefs create your thoughts, your thoughts create your emotions and your emotions dictate your actions. So, your actions are, you're not going to smile at your boss if you think he's a jerk. You're not going to nod and make eye contact every time he comes by. Your actions will be

different. You'll be a little bit more closed off. And those actions create the outcomes. Because if you treat your boss like you think he's a jerk, then he might, I mean, he's definitely going to, or she's definitely going to feel that and then might start acting like a jerk. Let's take that back to dogs. Let's say we have a breed by us. I have a terrier. Terriers are stubborn. Now we know terriers are stubborn. That's my belief. I'm out walking with my terrier and I spy a squirrel or a rabbit at the same time my dog does. And so, I call my dog and my dog being stubborn, of course, is going to take off after the squirrel and blow me off. And then what are my emotions now? Oh, that little, I can't say it on this podcast or it'll get the big explicit rating. I don't want that. And so then what are your actions when, you know, you storm off after this dog and what are your actions when you catch that dog? Now your emotions are running high. And so then what happens is you get an outcome based on your actions. So, your outcome, your immediate outcome may be, that's it. You're never getting off leash again. So, now this dog has to live a different life because of your belief that that dog is stubborn or blowing you off. And maybe when you caught your dog, you weren't as kind as you could have been in the way you gathered her up and put them on leash. And so, now you've got your dog a little bit worried about you. It affects your relationship. That is a belief circle. And it all starts with what you think about your dog. It's up to us to build that joy or self-control or focus for work into every single thing we do. You've heard me share the belief loop, but I just want to walk you through it with a slightly different way. So, it starts at the top with beliefs. These are not truths. Our beliefs are not truths. My friend, my beliefs are not truths. My beliefs are my perceptions. Now, there's a lot of things that will add up in my world to make it pretty clear that most of my beliefs are true. But quite honestly, some of the things I believe are more spiritual and they can't be proven. So, our beliefs are our perception. Those perceptions are not our own until we make them our own. Our perception of how things are, are formed when we're children. A lot of my beliefs and perceptions started with my big family, my siblings, and definitely my parents. My beliefs and perceptions in dog training were initially formed by my early mentors who believed that you needed games to make a dog excited.

So, I learned the valuable lesson of getting a dog joyful, but they also believed the dog needed to know, there's no choice now. You should know this. Therefore, I will put you on a choke chain and you will get corrections. Those were my beliefs that dogs needed to be taught with joy, but corrected firmly and swiftly so that they knew there is no choice. Now, I still believe dogs must know what is right and wrong, but I believe it's up to us to teach it in a strategic way that gets buy-in from them. So, they're emotionally invested, so they have joy for what you want to do. And it actually makes training a lot easier. But back to the beliefs. They're formed by your predecessors. They're formed by your family and friends. They're formed by your mentors. Their ideology gets cemented in you, especially if you are brand new to dog ownership or this is your first agility dog. And they're authority. They're the ones holding the clipboard and the stopwatch. You believe them. Instantly they have authority. The other people that will influence your beliefs are your peer group, your friends, the people you spend the most time with. Their beliefs about, oh, that's Susan Garrett. She talks a good story, but I bet at the end of the day, her dogs get, you know, a pinch collar and an ear correction. That could be their beliefs. So, bottom line, the belief you have about your dog, knocking bars because they're just being stupid or not thinking or not in control or not listening, pooping on your floor because they're mad at you. Your beliefs are not your own. Your beliefs are a perception. They are not true. You need to question them. Your beliefs are a direct pipeline to how you think, what you think. So, when a dog knocks a bar or goes off course, you may be one of those people that instantly tell the dog to lie down. And if the answer is no to any of those, then you've got to ask yourself a better question. You've got to question that belief. And the question comes in the form, I believe Brene Brown might've been the first one to say this, what if I'm wrong? What if what I'm currently believing is not true? What else might be true? And with Buzzy, he was the first dog I ever did any form of jump education with. And it was all horrible jump education, but that led me to finding somebody who really understood how to train jump work. Oh my gosh, it changed his abilities. As a five-year-old dog, it changed his abilities by me questioning, what if I'm wrong? What if he isn't just blowing me off and being obstinate and not being

able to control his emotions? What if he truly doesn't understand how to jump properly? So, questioning your beliefs will lead you to, I promise you a better relationship with your dog and a deeper understanding of dog training, more abilities because you are now moving from a place of fixed mindset to a place of growth mindset, opening up possibilities to try new avenues to help your dog to find ability or to find joy, or to be emotionally more regulated. Changing beliefs are eradicating those perceptions that no longer serve you, that no longer serve the kind of person you want to be, that no longer serve the kind of relationship you want to have with your dog. Now I've spoke about growth mindsets before on this podcast. Now a big part of your mindset is your self-talk. And I just can't remind you enough about this. The way you talk to yourself, and I know you do it, don't deny it. So, as simple as tripping over the step and going, oh, how could you be so fill in the blank? How do you talk to yourself? Or when somebody says, oh, you didn't get this. How do you respond by saying, oh, that's because I never do bloom, bloom, bloom. That negative self-talk, trust me, you are planting for your brain things you want in the future. The brain is always listening. Something I was reading today, they talked about language. We talk about how to spell, but actually it's a double meaning because it's a spell we put on ourselves by the words we use. So, be really conscientious about both how you talk about yourself, how you talk about your dog. So, I'm lumping in how you talk about your dog or think about the actions or the behaviors of your dog. I'm lumping all that in to self-talk because it has a massive impact. Now, what self-talk does is it fans the flames of your belief. And that belief is what leads to the outcome. It leads to the life you have. It all goes back to what you're believing. Now, I'm not saying just by changing your beliefs that all of a sudden babies don't cry and unicorns will always be dancing and lighting the way for you, because there's more to it than that. But it is a massive, massive part about it. And you can change the way you talk about yourself, about your dog. Just know to start off, this is probably nothing to do with you. It's your upbringing. It's possible trauma you had in your childhood. It's the coaches, the mentors you've had. Sadly, in dog sports or in dog training, there's a lot of people who are very ego-driven. And so, in order for them to feed their own ego, they have to make sure they can demonstrate

how much better they are than you in whatever it is that they're coaching you. So, they'll say things like, let me just show you, or clearly you're not ready for this. Little subtle things that are planting ideas in your brain that you're just not good enough. And it's not true. Dog training is not an art. Dog training is a science. Anyone who applies themselves can get really, really good at it. So, you need to remember that it starts with you, look in the mirror, how do you talk about yourself? And it also comes from the programming you're giving your brain. So, your brain might be programmed by things like meditation or visualization or reading or Netflix or Facebook and TikTok or mantras. Do you see what I mean? Several of those things would be really, really good to program your brain because they're intentionally taking you to a better place. Some of those things are taking the power to program your brain and you're giving it away to complete strangers. Here, put in any ideas you want. I'm going autopilot right now. Don't do that to yourself. Be intentional. Plant amazing ideas about what's possible for you and your dog. Make sure that brain gets programmed the way you want it to get programmed.
