I have owned nine puppies and a lot of rescue dogs that have all grown up to be amazing adult dogs. Dogs that were the envy of people who met them. Dogs that people wanted to own themselves. Was I lucky? No. I followed a process. And equally important as following a process, I avoided doing certain things with my puppy. And that is what I'm going to talk about on today's podcast. Things I absolutely don't do that a lot of other people might do with their new puppy. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. And I've got 10 things I want to talk about that people will do either intentionally or inadvertently the first day they get a puppy. And these are things that I absolutely will avoid doing when I get a new puppy. So, let's think about the goal. What we want is we want a confident dog. We want a dog who's so bonded with us. They're part of the family. They're part of the team. They do as we ask. Maybe we want to play a sport. Maybe we just want a great companion to go hiking or go visiting family with. That's what we have in mind. We have this goal. And so, everything that I do with a puppy, I reflect back on what I've talked about many times here on the podcast, and that's my 5C formula. It starts with connection. Well, who can't be connected with a puppy? I mean, they're cute. They're amazing, right? So, connection and then clarity and then confidence. For me, that clarity starts with the clarity of how to be excited and how to be calm. That starts on day one, and it just carries through with everything that we do. So, when I look at things that I do with my puppy, I ask myself, does this contribute to growing confidence in that puppy? Is this giving me a better connection, giving more clarity to the puppy to exactly what I want? And is this helping to grow a confident puppy? And so, the first thing that people do is they're just not prepared. They haven't done appropriate shopping. Like who doesn't like shopping people? Do your shopping. You have permission. So, things like the obvious, you need really good quality dog food and treats. Highest quality dog food and treats that you can afford. And then we need a place to house our puppy. So, a crate or maybe more than one crate, a X-pen or maybe more than one X-pen. I'll get to that later in the podcast. And what we're going to do with said X-pen, you want to go around and visit veterinarian clinics. You want to decide what would be the best place for you to take your puppy to. And really, it shouldn't just be what's closest and what's cheapest. There is a lot of difference between veterinarian clinics. You want a clinic

that is going to treat your puppy with kindness. You want every visit to be a pleasant one for the puppy. So, you know, ideally a fear-free clinic, but even if they're not a fear-free clinic, go in and talk to them and meet the staff and ask them questions and ask people in your neighborhood about the veterinarians they use and why they like their veterinarian. I can tell you why I like my veterinarian. If she doesn't know the answer, she finds it. You want somebody that just doesn't shrug. They go that extra mile for you. Okay. Likewise, training, super important. Decide the methodology that you want to take to train your puppy. Be very intentional about this. This for sure is not something you just go, I'm going to local. I'm going to give them my, you know, put all my trust and faith in them. Because if you've been following the podcast, you know that there's a lot of different ways to grow your puppies and some of them will grow that relationship and bond with you. Some will suppress behaviors and suppress emotions and potentially ruin that bond that you have with your dog. So, very intentional. You've got to buy a leash and a collar and maybe a harness or a head halter. You possibly need a dog bed or 20. Just whatever, whatever you do, no judgment here. I might have the odd dog bed around this house. Okay. So, number one, people aren't prepared. You know, they go to the pet store on their way home with their new puppy. Oh yeah, we need a collar, don't we? You know, some people might shop for things like a collar leash, but they don't think of the other things. Okay. Number two thing that people do is their expectations are way too high, way too high for a puppy. Like a puppy is a baby. Is this a baby? Think like one step up from an amoeba, right? Like we say in sports, they've got a very low floor, but a very high ceiling. Like an amoeba has got a low floor and a low ceiling. So, a puppy comes with, you know, there's, there's nothing factory installed guys. And so, they're going to make a lot of mistakes. Your expectations shouldn't be what you've been seeing on TV where the puppies, you know, can solve a mystery and retrieve Jimmy from the well. We want to keep our expectations very low, which means we are going to put the expectations very

매우 높게 설정해야 한다는 뜻이죠. 즉, 강아지와 아이들만 남겨두고 절대 자리를 비우지 마세요. 세상에서 제일 착한 아이들이라 하더라도, 무슨 일이 일어날지 모르니까요. 그래서, 스스로에게 물어보세요. 두 살배기 아이를 강아지와 함께 두고 커피를 타러 가는 것이 강아지의 자신감을 키워주는 행동일까요? 그게 오히려 자신감을 뺏어갈 가능성은 없을까요? 그렇다면 그냥 하지 마세요. 우리가 굳이 울타리나 X-펜을 장만한 이유가 바로 그거잖아요, 맞죠? 세 번째, 첫날부터 강아지를 너무 힘들게 하지 마세요. 온 가족에게 다 연락할 필요는 없어요. 이모, 삼촌, 할머니, 할아버지를 다 부를 필요가 없죠. 강아지를 데려온 첫날에 대가족 모임을 열 필요는 없습니다. 저는 강아지가 새로운 환경에서 스스로 자신감을 키울 수 있도록 3일 정도는 시간을 주는 편이에요. 그러니 손님 방문도 최대한 자제하세요. 그리고 확실한 건, 팟캐스트 157화에서 언급했던 것처럼 강아지가 한계를 넘어서거나, 가족들이 키우는 다른 반려동물들을 한꺼번에 다 만나게 해서 강아지가 압도당해 불안해하는 모습은 절대 보고 싶지 않아요. 갑자기 이구아나가 나타나는데, 강아지는 이구아나를 한 번도 본 적이 없잖아요. 거기다 사람들까지 잔뜩 몰려와서 아이들이 '어머, 너무 귀엽다!'라고 말하며 달려드는 상황 말이에요. 진정하세요. '이게 강아지의 자신감을 키워줄까?'라고 자문해보세요. 제가 강아지에게 절대 하지 않는 네 번째 실수는요, 이게 정말 중요한 건데요. 집 안에서 강아지를 너무 지나치게 감독 없이 풀어두는 것입니다. 강아지 전용 공간을 마련하지 않는 거죠. 팟캐스트 70화에서 저는 이와 반대되는 내용을 다뤘습니다. 멋진 강아지를 키우기 위해 제가 준비하는 모든 것들에 대해 이야기했죠. 그러니 이 방송을 다 듣고 나면 팟캐스트 70화로 넘어가서 제가 하는 일들을 들어보세요. 강아지가 실수하지 않도록 X-펜으로 강아지 전용 공간을 설치하는 법을 포함해서요. 만약 강아지에게 집 안 어디든 마음대로 돌아다닐 자유를 준다면, 전기 코드처럼 씹지 말아야 할 것을 씹게 될 수도 있어요. 아니면 아무 데나 배변을 할 수도 있고요. 부적절한 장소에 배변을 하는 것입니다. 강아지는 여러분에게 도움이 되지 않는 습관을 반복해서 익히게 될 수도 있습니다. 나중에 여러분이 꿈꾸던 반려견으로 키우기 위해서는 말이죠. 그러니 최소화하세요. 네, 강아지에게는 밖으로 나와서 돌아다니며 탐색할 시간이 필요하지만, 그것은 여러분이 강아지가 무엇을 하는지 지켜보는 감독 하에 이루어져야 합니다. 다섯 번째, 저는 미끄러운 바닥을 덮어둡니다. 요즘 대부분의 사람들은 알다시피 어느 정도, 잘 닦인 원목 마루나 다소 미끄러운 리놀륨 바닥을 가지고 있는데, 강아지들이 다리를 쭉 뻗고 미끄러지면 고관절 이형성증 같은 질환이 발생하거나 단순히
high on ourselves. Meaning, please don't leave puppies and children unsupervised together. Even if you've got the greatest kids known to man, you know, things could happen. And so, you want to ask yourself, is this growing confidence deciding to leave my two-year-old with my puppy while I go and make some coffee? Is there a potential that this may take away confidence? Just don't do it. That's why we have our puppy area, X-pens that we fought, right? Number three, people overwhelm the puppy on that first day. You know, you don't need to call all your aunts and uncles, your grandma and your grandpa. You do not need a big family reunion for everyone to meet the puppy on day one. I like to give my puppies three days to just grow their confidence in their new environment. So, really low key visits from anybody. And definitely, I don't ever want to see what we identified in podcast episode number 157, a puppy going over threshold or showing signs of anxiety because they're overwhelmed by, you know, all the family pets came in to meet them all at once. All of a sudden, there's an iguana there and they've never met an iguana before. And, and oh yeah, and there's all these people and there's these kids and going, oh, isn't he cute? Take it easy. Ask, is it growing confidence? Number four mistake that I don't make with my puppies. And that is, this is a biggie. This is just way too much unsupervised freedom in a house. You don't have your puppy area set up. Now in podcast episode number 70, I talk about the flip of this. I talk about all the things that I do to prepare to have an amazing puppy. So, after you listen to this one, go over to podcast episode number 70 and listen to the things that I do, including setting up those puppy areas with X-pens so that I can know that my puppy isn't going to make a mistake. So, if the puppy has all this freedom to roam wherever they want in the house, they're going to chew things that maybe they shouldn't be, including possibly an electric cord. They may pee or poop in an inappropriate places. They may learn to rehearse habits that are not going to help you to have the puppy of your dreams down the road. So, minimize. Yes, they need time to be out and about and explore, but that's supervised with you watching what they're doing. Number five, I keep my slippery floors covered. There's, you know, most people today have, you know, some, either some nice polished hardwood or some linoleum that's a kind of slick and puppies that splay out their legs, have a higher chance of developing things like hip dysplasia or just,

어깨를 다칠 확률이 높아집니다. 환경적 요인으로 인한 외상으로 OCD(박리성 골연골염)가 흔히 발생합니다. 그래서, 저는 더티 도그 도어매트나 러너로 바닥을 덮는 것을 좋아합니다. 강아지가 최소한 달릴 수 있는 작은 활주로를 마련해 주는 것이죠. 네, 강아지들은 에너지가 넘치고 신체가 유연하게 설계되어 있습니다. 관절이 완전히 고정된 상태가 아니라서 다 큰 개가 넘어지는 것만큼 치명적이지는 않습니다. 하지만 연구 결과에 따르면 바닥이 미끄러울수록 강아지들이 자라면서 부상을 입을 확률이 더 높다고 합니다. 그러니 미끄러운 바닥이 많다면 좋은 바닥 러너를 장만하는 것이 좋습니다. 여섯 번째, 만약 마당이나 산책 중에 밖에서 배변하도록 강아지를 키우고 싶으시다면, 실내 배변 패드를 사용하지 않는 것이 좋습니다. 물론 고층 아파트에 살면서 집 안에서 배변하길 원하는 소형견을 키우는 분들도 계실 겁니다. 지금 제가 말하는 건 그런 경우가 아닙니다. 밖에서 배변하게 하고 싶은 개를 키우는 경우라면, 처음부터 밖으로 데리고 나가세요. 겨울이라도 괜찮습니다. 만약 겨울이라면, 이미 준비 과정에서 다 포함되었어야 할 내용입니다. 눈 삽으로 공간을 치워두었어야 하죠. 강아지가 눈에 파묻히지 않고 대소변을 볼 수 있는 장소가 확실히 있는지 확인하세요. 자, 실내에 대소변을 봐도 된다고 부추길 만한 물건은 두지 마세요. 왜냐고요? 바닥에 둔 아이 외투나 여러분의 외투를 배변 패드로 착각하기 딱 좋거든요. 그러니 아예 시작하지 마세요. 그것은 강아지를 매우 혼란스럽게 합니다. 배변 훈련을 더 쉽게 하려면 그냥 전부 밖에서 해결하게 하세요. 7번째, 사람들은 강아지를 데려오자마자 첫날부터 강제로 사회화 훈련을 시키려고 밖으로 데리고 나갑니다, 그렇죠? 철물점에 가자, 가보자 하고는, 아, 우리 강아지 귀가 뒤로 젖혀졌네. 괜찮아, 그냥 데리고 다녀. 곧 익숙해질 거야. 라고 하죠. 안 돼요. 절대 안 됩니다. 여러분, 훌륭한 브리더에게 강아지를 입양했거나 정말 괜찮은 유기견 보호소에서 데려왔다면, 여러분의 강아지는 이미 철물점 같은 곳에 나가서 다른 사람들을 보고 다양한 소리를 들어봤을 수도 있어요. 여러분도 그렇게 하는 것이 좋은 생각이라고 생각하지만, 강아지를 데려온 첫날이나 이틀째는 아닙니다. 기억하세요, 자신감을 키워줘야 합니다. 며칠 지나면 강아지가 변화하고 자신감을 얻는 모습을 보게 될 거예요. 그러니 첫날부터 밖으로 현장 학습을 나가지 마세요. 모든 사람과 사회화할 필요는 없습니다.
you know, hurting their shoulders. OCD is common from trauma in the environment. So, I like to cover my floors with dirty dog doormats or dirty dog runners. The runners that the puppy at least has like a little runway to run along. You know, yes, puppies have burnout and they're built so that they're flexible. Their joints aren't really connected and it's not as bad as if an older dog wipes out. But they have done studies and they have shown that the more slippery the surface that the puppies are raised on, the higher chance they have of an injury. So, if you've got a lot of slippery floors, you might want to invest in some nice floor runners. Number six, if you are going to have a dog that you would like for them to go to the bathroom outside in the yard or on a walk, then I would not advise you to introduce them to indoor pee pee pads. Now, some of you might live in like high-rise apartments and you've got little dogs that you want them to, to pee in inside your apartment. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about if you have a dog that you want them to go outside, then start. Now, I don't, it might be the winter. It's okay. If it's the winter, that would have been part of your preparations. You would have cleared an area with a snow shovel to make sure that there's a spot for the puppy to pee or poo on that isn't like, you know, over their ears in snow. Okay. So, don't have anything indoors that you're encouraging to pee on because guess what? A kid's coat on the floor or maybe your coat on the floor could very much be mistaken for a pee-pee pad. So, just don't even bother starting. It really confuses them, makes house training easier if you just keep it all outside. Number seven, people are taking their puppies out and about for these forced socializing on day one, right? They're going, Hey, let's go to the hardware store. Let's go and, Oh, look at my puppy's got their ears back. It's okay. Just take them. He'll get used to it. No. Oh, no, no. Oh, nay, nay. You know, if you've got your puppy from a great breeder and even some really good rescues, your puppy may have already been out and about at places like hardware stores where they could see other people and they could hear other sounds. And I think it's a great idea for you to do it as well, but not in the first day or two that you have that puppy. Remember, build confidence. You will see that puppy transform and get their confidence after a couple of days. So, do not take them out on field trips on day one. They do not need to socialize with everybody.

자, 제가 하지 않는 8번째 실수는, 사람들은 대개 첫날부터 강아지에게 앉아, 엎드려, 이리와, 기다려 같은 신호를 사용하기 시작한다는 점입니다. 앞서 언급했듯이, 그 기능들은 제조 단계에서 설치되어 있지 않습니다. 그러니까 앉아, 엎드려, 기다려 같은 키워드를 이해하는 것은, 훈련이 필요한 부분입니다. 그건 여러분의 몫이고 교육입니다. 3번 항목으로 돌아가서, 기대치가 너무 높습니다. 첫날부터 기다려, 기다려, 기다려 혹은 앉아, 앉아, 앉아라고 말하지 마세요. 강아지가 자신감을 키울 수 있게 해주세요. 훈련은 시작할 수 있고, 뭐라고요? 강아지들은 그런 것들을 금방 배울 거예요. 그리고 여담이지만, 저는 강아지에게 앉아나 기다려 같은 것을 가르치지 않습니다. 음, 저는 기다려라는 단어를 절대 사용하지 않지만, 앉아라는 말도 가르치지 않죠. 아마 일주일이나 2주일, 어쩌면 한 달 동안은 안 가르칠 수도 있어요. 상황에 따라 다르죠. 제가 먼저 가르치고 싶은 다른 많은 것들이 있거든요. 그러니 여러분이 정말로 마음에 드는 행동이 나올 때까지 큐(신호)를 추가하려고 서두르지 마세요. 알겠죠? 여러분을 위한 작은 보너스 팁이었습니다. 아홉 번째, 사람들은 보통 강아지들을 너무 과하게 자극하는 경향이 있습니다. 강아지들은 너무 피곤해지죠. 피곤한 강아지가 착한 강아지라는 옛말이 있는데, 어느 정도는 동의하지만, 너무 피곤한 강아지는 짜증을 내고, 물려고 하고, 으르렁거리는, 흥분 상태에 빠진 강아지가 됩니다. 그런 건 원하지 않으시겠죠. 강아지들은, 아시다시피, 새로운 강아지들은 하루에 18시간에서 20시간 정도 잠을 자야 합니다. 견종에 따라서는 더 많이 자야 할 수도 있죠. 그러니 강아지를 과도하게 자극하지 마세요. 왜냐하면 강아지들이 실수를 하게 될 테니까요. 여러분은 곤란해질 것이고 보게 될 광경을 좋아하지 않을 거예요. 그러니 너무 많은 것을 기대하지 마세요. 과도하게 자극하지 마십시오. 조금씩 활동하고, 밖에 데리고 나가서 배변을 시킨 뒤에 낮잠을 자게 하세요. 자, 열 번째 포인트입니다. 사람들은 강아지가 자기와 떨어진 곳에서 자기를 바랍니다. 그러면 결국 강아지가 밤새 처량하게 울거나 짖거나 비명을 지르게 되죠. 제가 강아지가 밤새 잘 자게 하는 방법에 대해 전체 팟캐스트를 진행한 적이 있습니다. Okay. Mistake number eight that I don't do is people tend to start using cues like sit and down and come and stay with their puppy right on day one. Like I mentioned, the options were not installed at the manufacturer. So, things like understanding your keywords, sit down, stay, that's got to be trained. That's on you. That's an education. That goes back to point number three, expectations are a little bit too high. If you're saying things like stay, stay, stay, or sit, sit, sit right on day one. Let them grow that confidence. You can start the training and guess what? They'll learn those things soon enough. And just as a side, I don't teach things like sit or stay to my puppies. Well, I never use the word stay, but I don't teach the word sit probably for a week or two or maybe even a month. It really depends. There's a lot of other things that I like to teach first. So, don't be in a hurry to add a cue until you've got a behavior that you absolutely love. Okay. There's a little bonus tip right there for you. Number nine, people tend to get the puppies way overstimulated. They get overtired. There's this old saying, a tired puppy is a good puppy. And to an extent, I believe that, but an overtired puppy is a cranky, snapping, snarling, overspun puppy. You don't want that. Puppies, you know, new puppies need to sleep 18 to 20 hours a day. Some of them more depending on the breed. So, you want to not overstimulate that puppy because they're going to make mistakes. You are going to get in trouble and you are not going to like to see what you're going to see. So, just don't expect too much. Do not overstimulate them. Make sure that you do a little bit, take them outside, potty break, and then let them have a nap. Okay. Point number 10, people expect the puppies to sleep in a place away from them. And you end up with puppies who cry pitifully through the night or they bark or they scream. I did an entire podcast on how to get your puppy to sleep through the night. It's Shaped by Dog number 26. And it works, guys. It really works. And so, even if you don't want your dog to sleep in your bedroom, just for the first few weeks or a little longer, let that dog grow confidence. Let that dog sleep in the room just like I described in that podcast episode. And I promise you, you will have much sounder sleep and a much happier puppy. Okay. I'm going to give you two bonuses. I said I was going to give you 10, but I got two more. Okay. This is a biggie. You've got to keep your cool. You've got to keep your cool. So, on the one hand, puppies are cute. I mean, they're super cute and we love them.

On the other hand, they bite, they poop, they chew, they pee, they bark, they shred, they dig, they scream, they puke, they chase, they nip, they scratch, they whine, they destroy stuff, and they climb on everything. Oh, did I mention that they poop and they pee? Yeah. That's what a puppy is. So, go to your happy place and know the puppy's doing the best they can with the education they have, which is zero in the environment that you've put them in. So, if you do everything that I mentioned in podcast episode number 70, you will be setting your puppy up for success. You won't be nearly as frustrated and you won't see as many things coming out of your puppy's orifices or as many surprises around your home. Okay. And my final bonus is the use of reinforcement. So, here's another thing that I do differently in that I don't use food lures. And I'm not saying it's wrong. I'm just saying we do things differently around here. We do a lot of things differently than other people. So, we use food as a reinforcement. We don't get the puppies to follow food because we don't want them to think food is something they should be seeking out and trying to steal as they do with a food lure. Because my hallucination is that is not going to help them not want to get on the counters and steal the food off the counters or to be scavenging in your kitchen all day long. So, we use food as a reinforcement and it all starts with a game. It's your choice. I am going to leave a link here on YouTube. Remember I said, I want clarity of how to be, of when you're excited and clarity of when you're calm. I do that with a tug toy. Super, super important.
