오늘 우리는 '스테이지 투 인게이지(stage to engage)', 즉 참여 전 전략에 대해 이야기해보려 합니다. 요즘 어린 강아지를 키우고 있어서 이 주제를 계속 생각하게 되는데요. 그래서 저는 참여와 반려견 스포츠에서 장기적으로 큰 도움이 되는 것들에 대해 많은 시간을 들여 고민해 왔습니다. 그렇다면 우리는 무엇 사이에서 균형을 잡으려 하는 걸까요? 우리가 균형을 잡고자 하는 것 중 하나는 고전적인 강화물들입니다. 간식, 장난감, 그리고 바로 여러분 자신이죠. 여러분의 개성, 리더십, 그리고 즐거움은 중요한 구성 요소의 일부입니다. 반려견의 바디랭귀지에 반응하세요. 개는 여러분에게 말하고 있습니다. '난 그게 좋아', '난 그게 싫어'라고요. 귀를 기울이세요. 반려견이 여러분에게 말을 걸 때 잘 들어주세요. 강아지의 시선이 어디에 있는지 확인하세요. 지금은 장난감이 아니라 다른 개에게 집중하고 있네요. 정말 사랑스럽죠? 여러분의 목표는 좌절감은 최소화하고 즐거움은 극대화하는 것이어야 합니다. 그것만 해도 이미 앞서가는 것입니다. 여러분이 리더라는 것을 전달하고 싶습니다. 여러분은 유용하고 강아지를 도울 준비가 되어 있다는 것을요. 강아지가 허우적대도록 내버려 두지 않을 것입니다. 여러분이 통제권을 쥐고 있지만 강아지가 의지할 수 있는 자원이 되어야 합니다. 특히 압박감이 있는 상황에서요. 우리는 강아지가 힘들 때 여러분에게 도움을 구하기를 바랍니다. 왜냐하면 도그쇼에 나갔을 때 그것이 매우, 매우 중요해질 것이기 때문입니다.
Today we're going to talk about stage to engage, pre-engagement strategies. This is on my mind because I have a young puppy and so I've spent a lot of time thinking about engagement and things we do that serve us well over the long run in dog sports. So what are we trying to balance? Well one of the things we want to balance is the classic reinforcers. Food, toys, and you. You are personality, you are leadership, you are fun, you are part of an important package. Respond to your dog's body language. Your dog tells you. I like that. I don't like that. Listen. Listen when your dog talks to you. Notice where her focus is. She's mostly focused on the dog, not on the toy. Look how adorable. Your goal should be to minimize frustration and maximize fun. If you do that you're so ahead of the game. I want you to communicate that you're a leader. That you're useful and you're going to help them. You're not going to let them flounder. You are in control but you are a resource that they can rely on. In particular under pressure. We want your dog to look to you to support because when you go to the dog show that's going to become super, super critical.
