welcome to the dog trainers podcast a podcast created by dog trainers for dog trainers or anyone who's ever fallen in love with nan's best friend right it's crazy so it's like it's the the internet really just i think you were i don't know if you were you the was there someone else who was michael ish or were you the first one to just kind of take off on the internet on that you know i don't i don't know because like i'm i'm on the internet i'm terrible about all of the stuff so i use it like everybody else does but i don't order pizza yeah it's right and so um there were many other trainers that were spreading good information ahead of that so ivan of and i came up around the same time he is a genius dog trainer he and i are friends and would train together at various times he was making content and things very early on he has books and videos which i he's extremely gifted before that it was mostly done through seminars and things like that there were many good trainers that would go to clubs organizations and that kind of stuff for educational experiences or conferences and that kind of stuff um but the the actual kind of established trainers it just happened that i've been doing that for a long time when the internet really started to kick up and so that kind of allowed me for youtube where youtube started taking off yeah so that allowed that sort of slide out and i like honest to be honest i still don't even remotely use it to the best of advantage i'm terrible about it if luiberg weren't throwing out the stuff for me then it would it would be bad yeah yeah yeah oh i get that i totally get that um that's cool so i like how you guys you guys connected you know um yeah it would do you think learberg was a little bit of a launching pad because they kind of had something yeah there's no like so ed had been he got on the internet very early so right uh he'll tell the story but he have a friend of his from college was a professor in computer science or something at one of the universities and very early in the commercial aspects of the internet right you need to get in here and so ed had a website up selling dog stuff way early one of the first commercial dog sites there and so he was well established and had a mailing list and all that kind of stuff so that when i started he started to get my content out there and i'm positive there's no way the number of people would have seen me that have seen me without without their burden yeah they for sure um have been great and i'm a terrible marketer like i don't like like so training trainers to be professional trainers and they always ask me like so you know what's your strategy for marketing and

저는 그냥 좋은 결과물을 내면 사람들이 알아봐 줄 거고 다른 사람들에게 소개해 줄 거라고 말하죠. 사실 그게 네, 그게 사실이에요. 진짜 그래요. 하지만 그건 별로 도움이 안 되죠. 페이스북 광고 같은 거 생각해 본 적 있나요? 오, 네 요즘에는 그냥 누군가 카메라를 들고 당신을 따라다니면서 당신이 하는 모든 것을 촬영하게 하면 돼요. 그게 바로 마케팅이죠. 요즘 마케팅이 얼마나 변했는지 정말 놀라울 따름이에요. 제 말은 유튜브에서 가장 큰 채널 중 일부는 사람들이 하는 브이로그인데, 별다른 내용은 없는데도 영상 하나당 조회수가 1,500만 회씩 나오더라고요. 그냥 '이봐요, 저 가게 가요', '공원에 가요' 하면서 멋진 영상미와 적절한 편집, 그리고 약간의 배경음악 같은 걸 넣으면 사람들이 아주 열광하죠. 정말 이상한 일이에요. 우리 어머니 댁에 있는 여동생들이 이런 걸 하는데 자기들도 어린 소녀들이 인형을 가지고 노는 영상을 보는 거예요. 자기들도 장난감이 있는데도 그 아이들이 다른 장난감을 가지고 노는 걸 지켜봐요. 그래서 저는 대체 이게 왜 재미있는지 묻게 돼요. 네, 당신 걱정해야 해요 우리는 그것에 대해 걱정해야 해요 각자 생각하기 나름이지만 절대 안 돼요 자 그럼 본인 이야기를 좀 해줘요, 자녀는 있나요? 가족 관계는 어떻게 되나요? 저는 30년 된 아내가 있고 오 대단하네요, 우리는 자녀는 없지만 대신 개들과 여러 동물들과 함께 살아요, 사는 곳은 캘리포니아 세바스토폴인데 소노마, 서부 소노마 카운티에 있죠 샌프란시스코에서 북쪽으로 한 시간 정도 와인 산지인데 아주 조용한 평화로운 곳이에요, 네 네 맞아요, 제 아내는 배우이자 연극 연출가였어요, 컬럼비아 대학에서 연기 석사 학위(MFA)를 받았죠 그런데 학교 일이 잘 풀려서 바빠지기 시작했을 때 제가 아내를 본래 커리어에서 뺏어와서 학교 관리자로 만들었죠 그래서 아내는 예전처럼 연극을 많이 하지 못하고 있어요 너무 바빠서요 당신을 도와주느라 그러시군요, 네 아내가 없었다면 상상조차 할 수 없는 일이죠 절대 그럴 수 없었을 거예요 네, 당신처럼 일하는 사람 곁에 좋은 아내가 있다는 건 정말 모든 것이죠 그럼요, 그게 전부죠, 자 그럼 다른 질문 하나만 과거에 대해 더 해보죠, 이야기해 볼까요 음 어떤 사람들은 가장 좋아했던 초등학교 선생님을 기억하곤 하잖아요 이름도 기억하고 그때 일을 기억하는 것처럼요 그들과 그들이 그들에게 끼친 영향력을 기억합니다 당신의 여정에서 정말로 그들 중 몇몇 당신에게 깊은 영향을 준 사람들에 대해 이야기해 보죠 당신이 그런 생각을 하게 만들었던 사람들에 대해서요 네 제가 이 말을 하는 이유는 이 사람이 제가 아무것도 모를 때 저에게 가르쳐주었기 때문입니다 그렇군요, 그런 영향력 있는 사람들은 누구인가요? 음, 몇몇은 분명히 학교 선생님들이에요 제가 개와는 전혀 상관없는 일을 하기 전에요 확실히 중학교 때 영어 선생님이셨던 오스터마이어 선생님은
my i say do do good work and people will notice you and they'll tell other people that's really like that's yeah that's true it's true dude that's not really helpful like do you think about facebook ads or what oh yeah yeah now nowadays it's just like just have someone follow you with a camera and just do whatever you do yeah and that's marketing well it's crazy how marketing has changed these days i mean some of the biggest channels on youtube for example are just vlogs of people doing pretty much nothing but they get like 15 million views per video and it's just like hey i'm going to the store i'm going to the park and having nice shots and a bit of editing and some music and stuff and people eat that right up it's such a weird thing where like my little sisters at my mom's house do this thing where they they watch videos of little girls playing with dolls they have toys of their own but they they watch these kids play with other toys and i'm like why is this so interesting yeah you should be concerned we should be concerned about it each his or her own but no way man so tell us about you man you have kids you have a family what's going on i have a wife of uh 30 years now and oh that's amazing we have no kids lots of dogs and other critters we live in sebastopol california which is uh in sonoma western sonoma county uh okay hour north of san francisco in wine country uh very quiet hello place yep uh and uh yeah that's that's it my wife uh was is a an actress and theater director she had an mfa from columbia in acting and uh when the school took off and started to get busy i stole her from her actual career and made her and made her administrator of the school so she doesn't get to do nearly as much theater these days as she would like cause she's too busy uh helping you out yeah it would not be happening without her by any stretch of the imagination yeah having a good woman by your side man doing what you're doing that's everything everything that's everything um so let's dive into another little question about the past let's talk about you know like some people they remember some of their like first element like their favorite elementary school teachers they know them by name and they remember them and they remember the impact that they had on them let's talk about some of the people in your journey that it really just impacted you where you were like i will this i say this because this person taught it to me when i was blank right yeah who are those impactful people so some of the some of them are are school teachers for sure before i that have nothing to do with dogs so certainly mrs ostermeyer a junior high

어, 정말 정말로 저에게 도움을 주신 분들이죠, 제 지적인 여정에 있어서요. 선생님으로서 그분들은 저를 도와주셨어요 제가 생각하는 방식을 정리하고 사람들 앞에서 편안해질 수 있도록요 그분들은 저에게 많은 독서를 시키셨고 배움에 대한 호기심을 갖게 하셨죠. 그런 종류의 것들이요 그래서 저에게는 그런 분들이 여럿 있었고 이제 반려견 관련 사람들에 대해 이야기하기 시작하면 수많은 분들이 떠오릅니다 저는 클럽 시스템을 통해 성장했기 때문이죠 많은 사람들이 있죠, 제가 배운 사람들 말이죠, 저를 원래 반려견의 세계로 이끌어준 사람들 제가 처음으로 저먼 셰퍼드 독 클럽에서 복종 훈련 수업을 들었을 때 그곳에 계셨던 두 분이 계셨는데 빅터와 해리엇 가가 부부였어요. 그분들은 폰 빅터 켄넬을 운영하셨죠 샌디에이고 카운티에서 아주 오랫동안요. 오래전에 돌아가셨지만 음 그분들이 저를 붙잡고 이렇게 말씀하셨죠 이봐요, 여기 완전히 다른 개 관련 세계가 있었고 그들은 그들이 휴가를 떠날 때 저에게 켄넬을 맡기곤 했죠 그 세계로 저를 끌어들인 온갖 종류의 일들이 있었어요, 음, 저는 수의사 밑에서 일했죠 고등학생 때요, 어, 제가 도그쇼에 나갈 때, 그러니까 펜실베이니아에서 개를 보여주는 일에도 관심이 있었을 때 그게 큰 영향을 미쳤지만, 반려견 업계 사람들은 그게 클럽에서 다양한 사람들과 훈련하다 보면 결국 많은 사람들을 만나게 되죠, 그래서 수많은 트레이너들이 있었고 음, 제가 성장하던 시기에 남부 캘리포니아 지역에 많은 트레이너들과 시간을 보냈어요, 그러니까 알 바누엘로스는 당시 어, 슐츠훈트 트레이너로 유명했죠, 저는 아메리칸 불독을 훈련했고 결국 말리노이즈도 키우게 되었는데, 언급했듯이 그도 같은 시기에 성장하고 있었고 그의 사고방식은 엄청난 영향을 주었어요 이름을 알았으면 하는 한 여성분이 계신데 제가 처음 훈련을 배웠을 때, 그 당시 다른 모든 사람들처럼 제가 훈련을 배웠을 때는 음, 전형적인 킬러 방식의 압박이었죠, 그렇죠, 초크 리드 줄과 초크 초크 체인을 사용했고, 음, 그곳에는 우리가 작업하던 바이트 스포츠 필드 중 하나를 공유하는 복종 훈련 클럽이 있었어요 그리고 그곳에 AKC 복종 훈련사가 있었는데 그녀는 보더 콜리를 데리고 있었고 어느 날 그녀가 밖에서 복종 훈련을 하고 있었는데 그때 그분 성함을 알았으면 좋겠어요. 정말 전화해서 감사하다고 말하고 싶거든요. 그런데 그분은, 어, 저는 마치 그분의 개처럼 우리 개들과는 달라 보이더라고요. 그 개는 정말 행복해 보였거든요. 도대체 무슨 훈련을 하는 걸까 싶었죠. 네, 그분이 훈련하는 걸 지켜보고 대화도 조금 나눴는데 그게 저를 전혀 다른 여정으로 이끌었어요. 전 세미나에 참석하곤 했는데, 예전에 카렌 프라이어 세미나에 갔던 게 기억나네요. 그분이 이제 막 클리커 트레이닝에 대해 이야기하기 시작했을 때였는데, 그런 것들이 제 훈련 방식을 완전히 바꿔놓는 계기가 됐어요. 그랬죠. 어, 세상에, 미치 로빈슨(당시 성은 워커)은 슈츠훈트 클럽을 운영하던 분이었는데 제가
english teacher uh right there some people that that really helped me uh with my intellectual journey and so as a teacher they helped me kind of organize how i think and be comfortable in front of people and they made me read a lot and made me curious about learning and a lot of that kind of stuff so i had several teachers through that when we start talking about dog people i have tons of them because again i came up through a club system so well there are people like many people i learned so the the people that got me into dogs originally that the people that i took the initial obedience class at the german shepherd dog club there were a couple there victor and harriet gaga who owned von victor kennels in san diego county forever long since passed but um they kind of grabbed me and said like hey look there's this whole other world of dog stuff and they would let me kennel sit for them when they went on vacation there was all kinds of stuff that that that sort of hooked me into that that world um i worked for a veterinarian while i was in high school uh when when i was going to dog shows that was into showing dogs too in pennsylvania and that was very influential but the dog people you when you train with a variety of people in clubs you wind up meeting a lot of people so there are a ton of trainers um in the southern california area when i was coming up that i spent time so albanuelos was a well-known uh uh schutzend trainer at the time i trained american bulldogs and eventually had malinois i mentioned was coming up at the same time and his way of thinking was hugely influential there's a woman i wish i knew her name when i had learned training initially like everybody else at the time that i learned training we learned um straight up keeler method pressure right choked foot leash and a choke in a choke chain and um there was a obedience club that shared one of the bite sport fields that we worked at and there was an akc obedience trainer there and she had a border collie and she was out doing obedience one day and i i wish i knew her name i would love to call her and say thank you but she uh i want i'm like her dog doesn't look like our dogs like what that dog looks happy what is she doing right yeah i watched her train and talk to her a bit and it sent me off on a different journey right i had seminars uh that i went to like a karen pryor seminar back in the day when she was just starting and talking about clicker training and all that kind of stuff was like change the direction of my way of thinking about training and that kind of thing um gosh uh mitzi robinson now she was walker then uh was a woman that ran a schatzen club in

'나는 밸런스 트레이너야' 같은 식으로요 그녀는 정말 균형을 잘 잡았고, 또한 남다른 독창적인 사고방식을 가지고 있었어요 그래서 구체적인 기술들보다는 그저 개들을 아주 잘 이해했고 다르게 생각했죠 그녀에게는 공감하는 면도 있었어요. 그래서 저는 매우 분석적이고 단계적인 편인데 그녀는 일종의 '감'이 있었어요. 그래서 그녀는 문제에 접근할 때 가끔은 제가 전혀 생각하지 못한 방식으로 저에게 조언을 해주곤 했죠 그럴 때면 저는 '내가 생각했던 방식과는 다르네' 싶었어요 그건 문제를 다른 시각에서 해결하도록 만들어주곤 했죠 이반 발라반도 아주 많이 같은 방식이에요 마치 그는 반려견 훈련의 천재인 것 같아요 그는 천재이고 가끔씩 그는 무언가를 말하거나 행동하곤 했죠 있잖아요 제가 '그건 안 통할 텐데'라고 생각하게 되는 그런 거 있잖아요. 왜 그게 통하는 거지? 하는 그래서 그는 항상 저를 멈추게 하고 제가 알고 있다고 생각했던 것들을 재평가하게 만들었어요 그것은 더 나은 훈련사가 되기 위해 필수적인 거죠 그렇죠. 우리는 뭔가를 알고 있다고 생각하지만 지식을 수정할 수 있나요? 그리고 특정한 것들에 대한 사고방식을 바꿀 수 있나요? 그건 더 잘하게 될수록 어려워져요 그리고 더 많은 성공을 거둘수록 어떤 것에 대한 자신의 생각을 바꾸는 것이 더 어려워지죠 그렇죠. 음, 스튜어트 박사, 스튜어트 힐리어드 박사는 제 좋은 친구예요 네, 사실 누가 우리한테 힐리어드 박사에 대해 얘기했더라 타일러였을 거예요, 분명 타일러였을 거예요 맞아요, 아 그래요 왜냐하면 우리가 그건 그 이후였죠. 죄송해요, 말씀 계속하세요 그는 정말 분명 대단하고 훌륭한 사람이에요. 아주
in northern in ramona in northern san diego county when i when i grew up and uh i started doing helper work there and she showed me a lot taught me a lot and when you're in the club system uh and i was young and unattached so we drove everywhere the people trained with uh lisa mays who was my partner in breeding dogs for many years we came into that that bite sport world around the same time 1989 i met her and uh she had an incredible way of thinking about training was highly influential on the way i thought about training as well um what do you what do you think the big takeaway was from that so for her she she was the she was the probably the original balance trainer in my opinion right she was like like so she was a very good pressure trainer and she would learn pressure training like everybody else and when she got attached to reward-based training she did a very good job of blending it and hers was really balanced right so these days when people talk about balance training a lot of people are using it as an excuse to use pressure right yeah yeah i get i i did two days of food work and then i put an e-collar on the dog yeah yeah okay i'm a balanced trainer kind of thing she really had a balance and she also had an kind of out-of-the-box way of thinking about things so it wasn't specifically techniques she just got a red dog's well and thought about things differently there was an empathic side to her i do like so i'm very analytical and very step by step and she had a kind of feel and so she would approach a problem and sometimes she would say something to me in a way that i was like that's not the way i would have thought about it and it makes you come out a problem in a different way ivan of is also the very very much the same way like he is a dog training savant like he is a genius and every once in a while he would say something or do something you know that where i would say that shouldn't work why does it work you know kind of thing and so it always made me pause and re-evaluate things that i thought i knew which is essential to you becoming a better trainer right you have to say like we know things but can you modify your knowledge and can you change your your thinking about certain things and that gets hard the better you get at it and the more success you have the harder it is to sort of shake up the way you think about things a little bit right um stuart dr stuart hilliard is a good friend of mine yeah yeah actually uh who talked to us about dr hilliard it must have been tyler it must have been tyler yeah oh yeah because we were that was post yeah sorry go ahead yeah he's dead for sure he's an amazing guy brilliant

뛰어난 반려견 훈련사였죠. 그는 콘텐츠를 만들고 있었어요 그래서 초창기 콘텐츠에 대해 이야기하고 싶다면 80년대의 그 사람이 그랬죠 그는 케이나인 트레이닝 시스템스(Canine Training Systems)를 위한 비디오를 만들고 있었는데 거기는 라이어버그(Liarberg)의 경쟁 업체 같은 곳으로 반려견 훈련 비디오를 제작했죠 그들은 콜로라도에 있는 회사였고 콜로라도에 그는 슈츠훈트(Schutzhund)와 헬퍼 작업 등에 관한 몇 편의 비디오를 제작했어요 80년대에 그는 실제로 그 어 프랑스 링스포츠를 미국에 들여와 주최했던 사람이었어요. 와. 미국 최초의 링스포츠 세미나는 스튜어트가 유럽으로 여행을 다녀온 후였는데, 돌아와서 음 프랑스 훈련사들을 데려왔고 콜로라도에서 세미나를 열었어요. 80년대 중반, 86년이나 87년쯤이었던 것 같아요. 와, 그가 여기서 세미나를 열었고 그게 미국에 도입된 계기가 됐죠. 음, 하지만 그의 그가 여전히, 보호 훈련에 관한 테이프가 있는데 그가 만든 건데 그는 디코이였고 그는 보호 훈련의 기초를 보여주고 있었어요. 디코이로서 말이죠. 너무 깊이 들어가고 싶진 않아요. 왜냐하면 많은 사람들이 아마도 제가 무슨 말을 하는지 모를 테니까요. 하지만 어쨌든 보호 훈련에서 개에게 물리는 사람은 개를 훈련시키는 사람이에요. 사람들이 개를 보호 훈련시킬 때 당신이 개를 다루고 있는 거죠. 물리는 사람은 개를 가르치고 있는 사람인 거예요. 맞아요, 맞아요. 디코이, 헬퍼, 어지테이터, 뭐라고 부르든 그 사람의 기술이 당신의 성공을 좌우해요. 당신이 성공한다면 그건 그들이 제대로 일하고 있기 때문이죠. 그리고 음, 이건 개에 대한 일종의 반응이에요. 당신은 개를 관찰하고 그들의 바디 랭귀지를 읽어야 해요. 그리고 개가 무언가를 할 때 당신은 반응해야 합니다. 그들이 당신에게 영향을 줄 수 있도록 말이죠 맞아요, 정말 대단한 일이죠 그리고 그는 자신의 반응에 정말 극적이었습니다 그 영상에서요, 정말 극적이었어요 하지만 바로 그때 제가 깨달았어요 아무도 그런 걸 설명해주지 않잖아요, 사람들이 개들을 훈련시키는 걸 봐도 겉보기엔 아무것도 안 하는 것처럼 보여서 밖에서는 알 수가 없는데, 그의 반응은 정말 컸거든요. 그때 기억이 선명해요 저는 생각했죠 맙소사, 개가 주도권을 느끼게 하는 게 내 역할이구나 네 맞아요. 근데 그는 마치 개를 빤히 쳐다보다가 개가 움직이면, 마치 파도가 밀려오듯 팔을 뒤로 확 젖혔어요 마치 공격을 당하는 것처럼요 그랬는데 그 분야를 막 시작하는 사람들에게는 아주 분명하게 보였어요 그렇죠, 바로 그게 물기 훈련에서 연극적인 요소를 조금 더하는 거예요 조금 더요 그 덕분에 확실히 보였죠. 어떻게 작동하는지 분명하게 알 수 있었어요 제가 할 법한 미세한 반응과는 대조적이었죠. 개가 소매를 물 때 제가 팔을 살짝 움찔거리는 건 밖에서는 아예 보이지도 않거든요 그래서 저는 생각했죠. 아, 이건 제게 정말 판도를 바꾸는 계기였어요 그렇죠, 그래서 그렇게 느꼈어요 저도 처음 그를 만나기 전부터 이미 그를 아는 것 같은 기분이었어요 맞아요, 영상을 보는 것만으로도요. 그래서 저는
a very good dog trainer he was creating content so before if you want to talk early content that was him in the 80s he was doing videos for canine training systems which was like liarberg's competition making dog training videos they were a company in colorado and he did some videos on schutzen and helper work and stuff in the in the 80s he was actually the person that uh hosted and brought uh french ringsport to the us oh wow very first ring sport seminar in the u.s was after stewart made a trip to eur europe and came back and um brought french trainers back and did a seminar at colorado i want to say in the mid 80s 86 87 something like that wow he did a seminar here and that kind of brought that to the us um but watching his he still he there's a tape on protection work that he did and he was decoying and he was showing foundation protection work and as a decoy and i don't want to go too far down this road because lots of people don't probably don't know what i'm talking about but anyway the person getting bit by a dog in protection work is the person training the dog when people the of training their dog in protection you're handling the dog the person getting bit is the one that's teaching the dog right right the decoy the helper the agitator whatever you want to call it person their skills uh drive your success if you're going to be successful it's because they are doing their work right and um it's it's a kind of a reaction to the dog you observe the dog you read their body language and when they do something you need to react so that they can make an impact on you right and it's a huge thing and he was super dramatic in his reactions in this video by his video very dramatic but that's when it clicked for me like nobody explains that you watch people work the dogs and it doesn't look like they're doing anything you can't see from the outside but his reactions were big reactions and i remember clearly at the time i'm like oh my god that's my job to make the dog feel empowered by yeah okay but his would be like he'd stare at the dog and the dog would work and then it was like a wave of water he'd throw his arms back like he was getting hit but it made it obvious to somebody that was starting in that world of right upper work add a little bit of theatrics to it a little bit and you re you saw it clearly you saw how it worked as opposed to some little subtle reaction that i might make where the dog's biting when i twitch my arm a little in the s in the sleeve you don't even see that from the outside so i'm thinking oh and it was a game changer for me like right and so i felt it i i felt like i knew him before i met him the first time

정말 대단하다고 느꼈죠 그건 놀라웠어요. 그래서 그는 제 훈련 방식에 큰 영향을 주었습니다 그리고요 그다음에는 그냥 훈련받은 사람들이 많았죠 유럽에서 건너온 훈련사들이 세미나를 열기도 했고요 음, 길을 가다 만나는 다른 친구들이나 사람들한테서도 말이죠 여기서 좋은 아이디어를 얻고 저기서도 좋은 아이디어를 얻는 식이었죠 실력 있는 사람들이 훈련하는 걸 지켜보면서 배우는 것들이 엄청나게 많습니다. 어느 정도 교육을 받고 나면 핵심 원리를 알고 나서는 훌륭한 훈련사들이 훈련하는 모습을 지켜보게 되는데 저는 운 좋게도 항상 돌아다니면서 정말 수많은 대단한 훈련사들이 일하는 모습을 볼 수 있었고, 여기서 하나 저기서 하나 무언가를 배우곤 했습니다
right just from watching him and i and i want it was incredible so he had a big impact on the way i think about training and then there were just many trained trainers from europe that came over and did seminars uh other friends people you meet along the way that you get a good idea here you get a good idea there like watching good people train uh you pick up epic amounts of it you once you get your education to a certain point and you know the core principles going and watching good trainers do their thing which i had the luxury traveling around all the time of watching just scads of incredible trainers do their work and i pick up something here and something there
