반응적이고 겁이 많으며 위축되었다는 말은 사람들이 이제 세 살이 된 제 보더 콜리, 디스를 묘사할 때 썼을 법한 단어들이었습니다. 디스는 사실 모든 것을 무서워했습니다. 바(bar)가 떨어지는 것도 무서워했죠. 녀석은 훈련을 떠나곤 했습니다. 평범한 보더 콜리는 아마 12에서 15피트 정도를 뛰어넘을 수 있겠지만, 녀석은 고작 8피트밖에 넘지 못했습니다. 생후 18개월 때 세미나에 참석했을 때는 자기 건물 안에서조차 산만했습니다. 저와 교감하려 하지 않았고 앞으로 나아가지도 않았습니다. 터그 놀이에는 전혀 관심이 없었죠. 그런데 1년이 조금 지난 지금, 이번 주말에 녀석은 US 오픈에 참가했을 뿐만 아니라, US 오픈에서 훌륭한 성과를 거두었습니다. 가자, 가자, 가자, 가자! 가자, 가자, 가자, 가자! 가자, 가자, 가자! 가자, 가자! 가자, 가자, 가자! 가자, 가자, 가자! 가자, 가자, 가자! 반려견이 매일의 기쁨을 찾도록 돕겠다는 마음가짐으로, 우리는 완벽함이 아닌 발전을 추구했습니다. 반려견의 삶에 명확함을 가져다줄 때 어떤 가능성이 열리는지 여러분이 깨달았으면 합니다. 여러분은 반려견이 자신감의 불꽃을 피울 수 있도록 돕는 것입니다. 그리고 그 자신감으로부터 기쁨이 자라날 수 있습니다. 그래서 이렇게 저렇게 계속해서 해나갔습니다.
Reactive, fearful, and shut down were words that people might use to describe my now three-year-old border collie, this. Lissy was afraid of everything, really. Afraid of bars falling. She would leave work. Where a normal border collie would bounce maybe 12 or 15 feet, she could only bounce eight. Even in her own building, here at a seminar as an 18-month-old dog, she was distracted. She wouldn't engage with me. She wouldn't move forward. She had zero interest in tugging. And here we are now, just over a year later, and this weekend she not only competed at the U.S. Open, she thrived at the U.S. Open. Go, go, go, go! Go, go, go, go! Go, go, go! Go, go! Go, go, go! Go, go, go! Go, go, go! With a mantra of helping my dog to find daily joy, we looked for progress, not perfection. I hope you realize what's possible when you bring clarity into your dog's life.
