do you think this makes sense to everybody? And she said, what's more unkind? Somebody who uses a pinch collar on their dog, who many of us would go, I would never do that. That's unkind. Or that person never taking their dog for a walk because they have no control over them. That's why I said today, I think could be a little controversial because if that's all you've got, I, now, of course I would immediately say, let's play some games and help that dog want to wear a head halter because then you actually will have power steering without an adversarial relationship. So, you know, what is it, you know, it's perception. What is unkind? If, if I don't, I don't need anyone to put up their hands, but if there's anybody that is on this live, that is from a balanced training point of view, or they are, um, or they just, um, have a different view of how reinforcement based dog training works. They are living in their own perception. I have my own rose colored glasses. They have their own rose colored glasses that they may think it's unkind. Um, when I raised this, I didn't let her run with her mother until she was close to a year old. Um, I have something in my eye, I apologize. And that would have been seen as unkind. But what it did is allowed me to open up more opportunities for the rest of her life. She had less opportunities from the age of, uh, six months to, to a year, but then she got a lot more opportunities from a year till I'm hoping she's here until she's 20 years of age. Okay. Let me keep going. What else we got? Uh, head halter is a biggie that a lot of people, and I, you know what? I agree that a head halter, a leash, a collar, any kind of collar, any kind of leash, a crate, any of this can be unkind if it is not, um, brought or conditioned in the right way. Now there'll be some dogs that'll be like, whatever, um, for some of these things. But I think most of the dogs, all dogs, all dogs will benefit if we put the time and the kindness. And I'm going to show you some, uh, little snippets of some video clips. I, I, I just quickly put together when I thought this might bring some clarity for people of, of, um, what you can do to help condition a something as simple as a collar on a puppy. Okay. Um, collar grab, because I don't tell the dog before I grab the collar. People think that's unkind. Well, I guess again, that's perception. If it's followed up with a super high value reinforcement, um, why is that being unkind? Because the dogs are conditioned that this means something amazing. Raw food or whole prey is another one. Yeah. Oh my God. Don't get me

started on that, Rollin. Really? Let's. Okay. Um, and, and just for clarity, yes, I definitely am a raw feeder. So yeah, that's people think that's unkind. Um, yeah. Why do I put, why do you put your dog in a crate? Yeah, I agree. So, so why this is important, why I'm just touching on this point of it is it's so easy when you have, you're living by your values and you're making choices for your dog because of your core values. And then you see somebody else making other choices that don't align with yours. It's so easy to point a finger and say they are blank. And, and I just want, I just want to, uh, open you up to, um, be, be, you know, be confident in what you're doing, but be tolerant of what other people are doing because kindness, when we start looking at being kind to our dogs and be kind in our training and evaluate is this kind, then that helps us to look at, are we being, you know, just because somebody is choosing something for their dog, which isn't what we choose for our dog, then they're, then they're unkind. Why can't they just be on their own journey? Right? So I, I, it's highly unlikely there's many people here, but, but if there is, I welcome people who choose to train their dogs with a, with a balanced approach because that is your journey and who are we to judge? I just love to share what I do because I'm so enthusiastic about the relationships, not only that I have with my dogs, but that I don't know why I have this in my ear. I'm not listening to you. I wish I could, but, but the relationship that I see my students having with their dogs. And so I would love for everybody to have that opportunity to, to have that life. And, and it reminds me of, I'm gonna tell you a little story about myself. My grandfather was a missionary. He was a missionary in Northern Ontario. And when I went to university, he wrote me, we would write back and forth. And he said to me, I hope you are surrounding yourself with Christians. And I said, how will the non-Christians learn to have a loving heart if I'm never allowed to be around them? And it's like, if, if you, if I only surround myself with people who see the way I do and think the way I do, how are we going to learn to be tolerant of everybody in the world? So that's kind of the, you know, I guess I was a bit of a rebellious kid, even at 19, when I was talking to my grandfather. So kindness is a completely individual viewpoint. And all that we can do is, you know, I am at an elite level of dog training. I have accomplished what many, like very, very few others have ever accomplished in, in dog sports and in dog training.

But I keep myself open to what everybody else is doing. Not that I'm going to adopt and go, Hey, I'm going to give that a try. But I, I, I, I, I, I like to look at what other people are doing with a curious heart from a beginner's mindset. Like, I wonder why they're making those choices. And I love to talk dog training with anybody. And I think that's what kindness is right for me. It doesn't have to be for you because sometimes, especially if you're new on your journey, if you start looking around too many, in too many directions, then what happens is that you, you forget what direction you should be in yourself. Right? So certainly not something I recommend for everybody. Why is raw food viewed as being unkind? Oh, it's a number of reasons. Let's not, let's stick to dog training, but yeah, it's a number of reasons. Shock callers are another one that are very controversial because honestly, there is a lot of people who would say, you know, tater salad's been with us for almost two years. Um, if I, if you allowed me to show you how to use a shock collar, Susan, he would always be, um, coming when you called the first time. And, and I, and, and that's a debate that we will always have theoretically because it's not a choice I'm willing to make for my dogs. And, um, it's just in my world, that is an unkind choice. I can give him unbelievable freedom, have them, let them have an amazing life and manage when a situation is, um, you know, if I was off, off property, I wouldn't give him the kind of freedoms he has here. And if he chooses not to come, I'm not going to lose my poop. I'm not going to say I've given you two years of recall training. Why did you not come when you're called? My bad, my bad dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them. And honestly, Tater's got the short end of the stick here. We trained him a lot when we first got him to help him to understand how to fit into a world that we live in, but we didn't keep going because I knew there was no agility and there was no, so we really didn't do anything. Um, he doesn't get the same amount of training that say my young border collies get. Okay. So complete disclosure, he's got a better recall than I would say probably 90% of the world's dogs, but he doesn't have a better recall than any of my other dogs. And he doesn't have a better recall than my, any of my other terriers. So my Jack Russell terriers all had a much better recall than Tater has. All right. So a lot of, a lot of, of, um, of our perception

sometimes creates this fence of, uh, around us. And, um, and I'm just wanting you to consider that what we, that, that kind or unkind is something that is just about the, the, the, the, uh, color, the glasses that we're looking through life. Right. So, but I think we can all agree that as Brene Brown says, Oh, I got to get rid of this here. As Brene Brown says that clear is kind. So we choose to create our clarity with reinforcement base and game-based dog training. Others may choose to create their clarity with a long line and a choke chain or a pop on a collar of a pinch collar or, um, an electric collar. Either way, the goal is to create clarity because we, we all believe clear is kind, but it's the path we take to create that clarity that makes the difference. And so that is a choice that, um, that we all make in my job, my, as I see my role in life is to help people see what an amazing life they can have with their dog by training them without the use of electric collars or physical punishment that I believe you could get every kind of success you ever want without it. Now I'm going to give you some exceptions. So if you, your goal isn't to have the kind of relationship with your dog that I have with mine that you're, you're just kind of like, uh, I get my dog attention on the weekends when I have more time, but I work 12 hours a day. And honestly, I just throw Kibble in his bowl a couple of times a week enough that it keeps him going for the week. And I make sure his bowl has got clean water in it. Um, but I just use an electric fence around the backyard because I don't have time for training. And, um, that's a different view of pet ownership than I have. And so then, then you are probably not going to want to invest the time, but I know if I could convince you to invest the time and play these games with our dogs, it wouldn't just change the dog. It would change you. Right. And we just have so many of our students, um, who, who, who just mirror that back to us. All right. I'm going to just put up a couple of comments here. Um, does this make sense to you guys? It's so, it's so tough to not get triggered. I'm going to share with you something that I do. And I don't know, maybe this is judgmental on my part. This is something that I came about recently because I did not let like getting triggered when I saw people being what I thought was unkind to their dog in the park. And I would, it would trigger me. I would, I used to really lose it. And I created a word for myself that, um, that created, uh, instant empathy for the people who were being unkind to their dog.

So Susan, they may be just early on in their growth at discovering how reinforcement can change their lives and how reinforcement can change the dog's lives, which in turn will change their life, their new growth. So do you want to be harsh and judgmental of that new growth? Susan, if I say the word sprouts, it instantly puts me to a place of curiosity when I see people making choices that I don't want to get triggered. And so for me, sprouts, it's a word that sprouts. That's that, that's it. That's, that's, that's where I go to. Okay. And so you look at, um, um, training and I'm going to, I'm going to share with you a little video clip right now. And we get these questions. I'm going to, first I'll share this. This is the question that had, that came in recently. Where did it go? Uh, here. Nope. That's not the one here. Which program of yours would be best for obedience or another one that's similar? I have 11 month old rescue. I just found you. Where do I start with the basics? Somebody, uh, one of the most common questions is Susan, how do I teach sit and down? And I mentioned this on a podcast last week, those things just come like they're, they're like free when you create this amazing relationship with you, with your dog. So I'm going to share a little video clip that is, um, a puppy that came in, I think a week ago, his name was Gibby. He didn't know me from Adam and I wanted to do some training to, to do some videos for our, our YouTube community, which I haven't put those together yet, but they're in the midst. Well, when I say, I, I don't do any of the editing, the team does, and they're amazing. You all know, come on hearts for the editing team here at dogs that Oh, they're amazing. Right. Chris and Jude and Brandon, all of them. Um, so I'm going to show you this little video clip. This is my first interactions with the puppy. And I want you to look at this and in the comments, I'd like you to see, what do you think I'm doing? Super clip, super, super fast video clip. What is it that you, you think I'm doing with this puppy? Okay. Now I forgot that I have to share my screen to do this with you because, uh, I, for some reason I could not load this in. So, um, here is going to be the first one. Here we go. Okay. So share my screen. Boom. Boom. Okay. Now just write down in the comments. Oh, when you see this, hold on. I didn't share it. Hold on. I apologize. I apologize. Video's playing and you guys aren't watching right down in the comments. What you see, what you see here, what am I doing with this puppy? Okay.

Okay. So there's a lot of intentional things that are happening in this video. All right. So what I'm playing. Yep. I'm building drive. I'm teaching tug and trust. I'm creating a relationship. I'm in, I'm touching the puppy. Did you guys see when I touched the puppy, the puppy let go of the toy. And that just showed, I don't have a level of trust required for you to actually touch me when we're playing like that. Right? So all of this I'm observing, and this is when we play, getting him to, to, to tug it's bonding. It's having fun. Now I taught him to release. That was the first start of, of the release. I didn't like say, Oh, here's some food. Can we trade? Which is typical. I want him to start taking in what's going on. We're playing, we're playing and playing. And, and there, I turned the volume down, but I'm talking away and singing to this puppy. And then when I decide this, the, that the fun is, and I don't want to end when the puppy drops the toy, I don't want him to learn that you play until you don't want to. And then you walk away because in my world, play is work. If I can engage you with play, then that can lead to you being the most amazing dog with the greatest focus and the greatest willingness to work with me, which will lead to anything you want. An amazing family pet or a world champion in dog agility. And so what I'm doing, I'm playing. And before he gets a chance to let go a second time, I just freeze. I stopped talking. I freeze and he goes, Oh, what happened? And then I grab a cookie and I put it in his mouth. So it's the first opportunity. He says, well, when this lady stops talking and stops tugging, if I let go, I get a really good cookie. So he's learning. Now, if I was just tugging and then just took a cookie or a ball and said, here, do you want this? Stop, stop tugging and I'll get it. What I was teaching him is you keep doing what you want until you see something better and then go get that. I don't want that kind of relationship with the puppy. I want them to be attentive. Dogs are great at picking up patterns, right? They're great at picking up patterns or reinforcement. So I don't want him to make those kinds of choices. I want him to make choices that are relating to me. Okay. I'm going to show you another video. Now this one, I'm kind of setting you up. I don't imagine you will be able to figure out what I'm teaching here. Um, or it's actually the foundations of something, but just observe this and, um, and it's to do with kindness in dog training. Okay. So I'm going to share my screen

one more time here. I'll be better than I was last time. I promise. Okay. So here's the next video. So all there is, is a dog bowl. And I put down a little treat in the dog bowl. And it was a treat he liked, obviously. So then I put down an empty dog bowl. And when he put his face in it, I put down, I put a treat in the bowl. So I'm just putting an empty dog bowl down. And when he puts his face in it, I put the treat in the bowl. So what am I doing? I am communicating. Mary said, I'm communicating. Trish says I'm teaching touch. Targeting, right? Selena. I'm targeting. Place your face. That's a game from our homeschool, the dog or wag nation and, and, uh, nailed it, Julie. So place your face. Oh, somebody is so clever. Deb, Lori, Paschali, you all got it. I am so, and, and Haley. So what I'm doing is I'm starting to, I'm, I'm, I'm starting this. This is a brand new puppy, right? He's just eight, eight and a half weeks old. So I'm starting to him. I started it with a tug. Do what I want. You earn a good reward. Now put your head in the bowl and oh my gosh, look what happens. You get a cookie. So all of a sudden I just put the bowl down and he would like put his head in and we did, I, you know, this session went on. I did several sessions with this puppy. And so now I have as one, somebody who pointed out a target, right? Selena, you got it. You got it. I've got teaching to put your, your nose in the bowl so I could teach him other things. All right. So I'll show you the next part of this video. Um, and how this progression worked. Now I'm not, I don't have all of the video clips, honestly. Um, I kind of stole this footage from my editing team. I don't even know where the rest of it is. It will be, I, we are putting it together and it will be live for you, right? You can use it for conditioning. Yes. The, I was going to bring up the, the, uh, the e-callers, the big elite Elizabethan callers that we put on dogs when they have surgery. I'm sh I'm shaping him to do that. I'm shaping him to do a number of things. Okay. I'm going to share my screen one last time to see the next video clip. Is this, is this valuable to some of you to see, like, I just thought I've been talking about games and, and teaching dogs through relationship. And I thought it may be really ambiguous to some of you who really, who are not students of ours and don't understand. Does this help to give you an understanding of how we progress relationships and build? Okay. It does. Okay. Great. Okay. So I'll share this next video here. Here we go. Okay. Now look what I'm doing now. Look what I've done.

I've done. Now I have put a collar in the bowl. So now put down the coal though. And I put down the bowl and I put a cookie in the collar in the bowl. So there's nothing in the bowl. There's no cookie in there. It's just an empty bowl with a collar. That's all that's in there. Empty bowl and a collar. I put it down. And as soon as he puts his head in it, I give him a cookie, put the cookie right in the bowl. I've done this. I fast forward it a little bit. So now what I'm doing is I'm just taking, it wasn't just one or two repetitions guys. And now he puts his head in the collar and guess what happens? I pick up the collar, put it over his nose and he gets a cookie. Oh yeah. I put my nose in there. Good things happen. Good things happen. So when people say, Oh, putting a collar on your dog, that's scary. That's unkind. Can you see how easy little fun games that you can play around with your dog? It just starts with you, you know, having a plan and building on a behavior. And, and the next part of that, of that behavior for the puppy was I, I held the collar. I couldn't find this video. I would have showed you more and it will all be the whole thing is going to be on YouTube for you. So, so I could hold the collar like that. And he was putting his nose through that. And I just build up and build up and built up. All right. So I wanted to put this together because no matter what somebody says that's unkind, you can create a path so that the dog is making good choices so that they want to do what you want. There was there anything, anything unkind about what you saw there. That's how training happens. It's always the dog's choice. I'm not saying, um, I'm going to give you this cookie. If you drop the toy, I didn't say that. I just said, Hey, I'm not doing anything fun. And he goes, well, why not? Oh, food in your face. Okay. So now we have a relationship that something you do causes me to do something that you like. That's what training with games and reinforcement looks like. Everything creates a positive, positive association. Yes, Veronica. It's not a positive, but it also creates the focus for you. What, because you are the middle of all this. What are we going to do next? I can't wait for this. All right. And so that's, that's what training with kindness looks like. Now I used to be one of the people that said, I know my dogs don't love having their nails cut. They tolerate it, but, um, it, you know, I have to cut their nails because it's, you know, what's, what's more unkind, a dog with long nails or a dog that once a week has to put

up with me cutting their nails until in, uh, 1995, I believe it was somewhere in the mid nineties. I looked at my terrier who saw me pick up the Dremel and went and hid under the bed. And I went, what have I done and how can I change this? And so from that point on, I started working on a program that when my dog saw me getting the nail cutting stuff out, they were like excited. I want to go first. No, you went first last time. I'm going first. I want to go first. No mom, tell them I'm going first. That's what I want when it's nail cutting time around my house. So it doesn't matter what we're training. Anything that somebody says is unkind. It could be that they've trained it in a way that the dog is a hundred percent committed to playing the games. Okay. So does that make sense to you guys? That's what I'm looking for in all of our training. That's what we want from our dogs. And that's what our students recognize. So this is a comment from Allison, one of our students, you'll understand dog training and become kinder and a better person. Your dog will understand control and will have value for your teaching. And recallers is one of the programs Alice is in, will change your life in all the best ways. And I've mentioned that before, that when you're training this way, it does change you. When you're training a dog anyway, it changes you. So if you're training a dog where your goal is, and I was like this, this was my start in dog training. I was raised at a school of balance training where you gave them lures to get them to do what you want. And then you judge them. No, that's not what I said. No. And you corrected them. And I, I was really good at that. What are you doing? That I recognize that's not who I wanted to be. And that's who I was when I was teaching. And that's who I was when I was interacting with people. I mean, not overtly always, but it definitely change training this way. I examine my relationships. I know that I want to approach anything that I don't agree with from a place of curiosity. It's just, it's just healthier for me. It may not be for you, but it's healthier for me. So here's another one of our recallers. I joined recallers just to teach my dog to come every time he was called. Well, I soon found out recallers is about so much more than just recallers. Like I first thought recallers games are about fun training while building a bond with kindness, which with choices and clear communication, it's a way of life. I had no idea how life and relationship changing it would be. I highly, highly recommend it. Thank you, Kim.

Okay. So that is, we get, you know, we talk about relationship building while you're training. And I wanted to just share a clearer vision of what it is we actually do. So I hope this made sense for you guys. I hope that you understand now how our programs, they do change lives. They do help people to see dogs in a different way. So I noticed that your investment is in US dollars. Yes. So everything that we do, because we have, I think it's a hundred, I don't know. It's over a hundred countries that our student base comes from that we have been a company that is in US funds for, I don't know, at least close to 10 years because it was just too difficult way back when for our Canadian processors. They were turned down in other countries. Some countries had to pay like a $50 extra fee because they were dealing with Canadian companies. So US is just accepted across the board. So that's why it's in US. And I recognize that depending on the country you're in, that it is whatever it is like, I know in South Africa, South African dollars, not so great. Other countries are as well. And what happens is you use your PayPal or use your credit card and it will just make that transfer to your regular funds. Okay. Do any of your teaching muzzle conditioning help a dog be more comfortable with wearing, with being touched for vet visits? Bonnie in Homeschool the dog. We have a, something that we didn't even talk about here that I don't think you can even, I don't, I'm not sure. Lisa, can people actually join WAG Nation this go around? I don't think we're letting people join WAG Nation, are we? I could be wrong. And we teach how to condition your dog to something like a muzzle or a head halter. And in there, and that's where you would go for that. And I know I just caused complete chaos for my team because there'll be others of you who say, wait, I want them in that WAG Nation too.
