이 예를 들어볼게요. 우리가 테이터를 처음 입양했을 때인 1년 전 상황인데, 제가 숟가락으로 발톱을 건드려 보려고 했어요. 어디 보자. 발톱 손질할 때 뭔가 안 좋은 일이 있었던 모양이에요. 우리는 강아지가 붙잡히는 것조차 좋아하지 않아요. 발톱 손질할 때 뭔가 안 좋은 일이 있었나 봐요. 좋아요, 그냥 톡톡 두드려 볼게요. 안 좋은 일이죠. 뭔가 안 좋은 일이 있었어요. 세상에. 세상에. 안 좋은 일이죠. 너를 물어버릴 거야. 나를 물어. 손가락을 물고 있어요. 물어버리네. 아주 세게는 아니고요. 이 녀석은 이걸 정말 싫어해요. 그래서 점점 심해지더니 난폭해지기까지 하죠. 이빨을 드러내려고 하네요. 네, 전체를 다 보여드리진 않을게요. 됐어요, 착하다. 그 대가로 쿠키를 조금 줘볼게요. 그래도 먹기는 하니까 아주 겁에 질린 건 아니에요. 누가 쿠키라고 했나요? 좋아요. 네, 보시다시피 녀석이 정말 화가 난 상태예요. 그 상황이 악화되었고, 우리는 예전 집에서 끔찍한 일을 당하지 않았을 거라고 확신하지만 이전 주인이 아주 친절했을 거라고 생각해요. 하지만 녀석은 분명히 원치 않았던 거죠. 발을 만지는 것도 싫어하고, 발톱깎이나 드레멜을 발톱 근처에 가져갈 생각은 꿈도 꾸지 마세요. 정말 끔찍했어요. 제가 이 모든 이야기를 하는 이유는 방금 우리가 가치 전달을 이용했기 때문이에요. 이제 보여드릴게요. 제가 올라갔더니 녀석이 저기 침대에 앉아 있네요. 다른 정보도 없이 말이죠. 이리로 올래? 저리로 가. 녀석이 이걸 듣게 될 거예요. 무슨 일이야, 친구? 누가 발톱 손질을 하고 있나? 너도 하고 싶니? 좋아. 너도 좋아하잖아. 발톱 손질. 싫어하지 않아. 발톱 손질. 이건 이제 녀석이 가장 좋아하는 이벤트 중 하나예요. 그렇지? 우리 강아지가 아주 좋아해요. 정말 멋지네요. 드레멜을 어디로 가져가나요? 드레멜 다시 가져와요. 아니, 봐요. 녀석이 지금 당신 책상 옆에 서 있잖아요. 봐요, 아직도 필에게 달려들고 있네요. 드레멜을 원해요! 그가 마지막 세 계단과 나머지 두 계단에서 뛰어내리는 걸 보셨어야 했는데요. 네. 그는 계단을 날아 내려왔어요. 사실 드레멜이 있는 곳으로 가려고 코너를 돌다가 미끄러지기까지 했죠. 정말 멋지네요. 매일 해야 하는 행동을 가치 이전(transferring values)을 통해 개가 사랑하는 것으로 바꾸는 거군요. 그리고 여러분 모두 그게 얼마나 많은 노력이 들어갔는지 아는 게 정말 중요해요. 수잔은 그것을 최우선 순위로 두었어요. 확실히... 왜냐하면 이런 문제가 있거든요. 그 아이는 단두종이라 발톱을 깎는 것이 위험했어요. 그래서 제가 말했죠. 우리는 어쩔 수 없다고요. 사실 어떤 개들은 동물 병원에 데려가서 진정시킬 수도 있잖아요. 그런 다음 6개월에 한 번 정도 발톱을 아주 짧게 깎을 수도 있죠.
I'm giving this example. So this is a year ago when we first got adopted Tater and I was trying to touch his toenails with a spoon. Let me see. Something bad went on with nail trimming. We don't even like our pubs being held. Something bad went on with nail trimming. Okay, I'm just going to tap. Something bad. Something bad went on. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Something bad. I'm going to bite you. Bite me. Biting those fingers. I'm biting them. Not really hard. He does not like this. And this escalates to a point where he gets violent. I'm going to take my teeth out. Okay, so I'm not going to show you the whole thing. There we go, good boy. Try to give him a little cookie for that. He'll still eat so he's not terrified. Someone say cookie. Okay. Yeah, so you can see that he's really upset. He, and that escalated and we're pretty confident nothing terrible happened to him, but we don't know when he's been in his previous home. I think they were very kind, but he clearly did not want to. Touching his paws and don't even consider trying to bring nail clippers or a Dremel near his toenails. It was, it was horrific. And so now I'm telling you all that because we just used a transfer value. So I'm going to show you now. So I went up and he's sitting in a bed up there, like without any other information. Can you get over here? Get over there. So he's going to hear this. What's going on, buddy? Someone getting their nails done? Did you want yours done? All right. You like it. The snail's done. Doesn't us like it. The snail's done. This is now one of his high value events. Right? Us loves it. That's awesome. Where are you going with the Dremel? Bring the Dremel back. No. Look, he's like standing right by your desk here. Look, he's still jumping at Phil. I want the Dremel! If they could have seen him jump off the last three steps and the other two steps. Yeah. He came flying down the stairs. He actually skid as he tried to make the corner to get down to the Dremel. That's awesome. So that is taking something that you need a behavior every day and transferring values so that it becomes something that the dog loves. And it's really important you all know how much work. Susan made it a priority. It was definitely... And because here's the thing. He's brachiocephalic. He was a danger to try and cut his nails. And I said, we can either... We can't... You know, some dogs you could take to the veterinarian and you could sedate them. And then you could get their nails like really cut back every six months or something.

'좋아, 다 끝났어. 좋은 간식 먹자. 내려가자.'라고 하면 전 '알겠어요'라고 했죠. 그래서 긴 과정이었고 언젠가 제가 영상을 올릴게요. 아, 거기 조금 있었네요. 그리고 많은 경우 개가 무엇을 두려워하는지 분석해야 해요. 소리 때문일까요? 그래서 그냥 작동시켜 보기도 했는데... 소리 때문은 아니었어요. 제 생각엔 진동이 큰 부분이었던 것 같아요. 그래서 드레멜의 뒷부분으로 마사지를 해주곤 했거든요. 그러니까 제가 잘못한 부분들이 많았죠. 정확히 무엇 때문인지 알아내야 했어요... 아니면 발톱을 만지는 것 자체가 문제인 걸까요? 아니면 발을 잡고 있는 게 문제일까요? 음, 그건 왜냐하면... 강아지 발톱을 깎을 때 이렇게 발가락을 들어 올린 뒤에 발톱깎이나 그라인더를 사용하는데, 바로 그 발가락을 들어 올리는 동작 때문에 아이가 난리가 났던 거예요. 그래서 저는 '굳이 그렇게 할 필요가 없겠구나'라고 생각했죠. 그냥 이렇게 발을 잡고 그라인더를 가져가서 톡 건드려보면 어떨까요? 제 말은, 처음에는 결국 뒷부분부터 시작하는 식이었죠. 하지만 누군가가 과거에 분명히 그랬을 것처럼 발가락 하나를 억지로 들어 올려서 고립시키지 않는다면 어떨까요? 아이가 그 방식을 정말 싫어했으니까요. 그러니 나중에 다시 시도해 볼 수도 있을 것 같아요.
But he's brachiocephalic. So we don't want to put him under any kind of anesthetic. We can't do that to him. That bowling ball of a head. There is no way you could restrain him if he even wanted to, to cut his nails because he was so frantic about having his paws touched. And it was just, you know, a high, outrageously high value rewards and lots of... I mean, it was... Repetitions. Lots of repetitions. Susan made it a priority. She was like, if I was here, it was like, okay, Linda, we're going downstairs to do nails. Every day. I'm like, again? Every day. Like sometimes it was two or three times. You know, okay, we're done. We've got some good treats. We're going down. I'm like, okay. So it was a long process and someday I will put it on. Oh, there was a little on there. And a lot of the things you have to dissect what it is that he's afraid of. Is it the sound? So a lot of just turning... It wasn't the sound. It was the vibration, I believe, was a big part of it because I would just take the butt end and give a massage with it. So, you know, there was a lot of things that I broke. I had to figure out what exactly... Or is it actually the nails being touched? Or his paw being held. Well, that was because... When you cut a dog's nail and you do this and you bring up a toe and then you cut or dremel, it was that action of bringing up his toe that sent him into orbit. And I'm like, I don't have to do that. How about if I just hold your paw like this? And then I bring the dremel and just tap it. I mean, eventually at first it was just that back end of it and stuff. But how about if I don't ever try to bring up and isolate one toe the way somebody must have done to you at some point in your life and you didn't like it? So I guess I could risk it later.
