I was what they would call a balanced trainer. Back in the early 90s, I trained tricks just with shaping without any punishment at all. And I was talking to my now late husband. And at that time, he was an obedience judge. And I remember saying to him, you know, it's strange. I could give you probably 200 tricks that my dog knows. You could put them in a hat, pick out any one of them. And I could go into an obedience ring and I would nail them. Boom, boom, boom, boom. She would never make a mistake. But why when I'm doing healing and stay and all these other things, am I using corrections? So that was the first thing that got my wheels turning about, Susan, why are you training the way you train? So tricks were a big part of why I changed to becoming a reinforcement-based trainer, leaving positive punishment and corrections as part of my history.
