Okay, a couple of things. Number one, the example that I gave you here was from 1993, so that's like 30 years ago. My training has changed so much since 1993. It's not even funny. So, you know, what I should have, could have, would have done back then really is not important. But as a rule for shaping, I just don't think we should be interfering with the dog's choices because choice is such a powerful reinforcer. Also, what's your ultimate goal? It's to give that dog the autonomy to make their own decisions in the midst of training. If you choose to use a non-reward marker when you're shaping dogs, you're telling the dog you were wrong. That's not what I wanted. But what your dog's trying to tell you is that your antecedent arrangements were unclear and you could do better. So by not using a non-reward marker, your dog is helping you to be a better dog trainer in that you're setting environments better so that they can be more successful in anything you ask them to learn.
