In order for us to bring out the best in our dog, number one, we've got to think the best of our dog. And number two, we've got to think the best of ourself. We have to believe that me as that dog's owner can bring out the best. Each of us, our dogs become unbelievably brilliant the more we learn. The more educated we become, the better behaved our dogs become. That is the truth. We look for lessons in the failure and you've got to be okay. You've got to be okay with not being perfect. I 100% believe in the brilliance of all dogs. I don't care what their past is. I don't care what their history is. I know that it is possible for all dogs. And what I can do when I take somebody's dog is I can help them believe as well. Allow the dog and accept the dog for who he is. Do not try to get that square peg into a round hole. So the behavior doesn't define the dog. And it's our job to say, gotcha, going to change that. And this is what I'm going to do. We've never taught, watch me. We've never taught heads up, eyes up. Attention for me is a byproduct of connection. Okay? That should be on a t-shirt too. Who's in charge of t-shirt printing? Attention is a byproduct of connection. You shouldn't have to tell your dog, watch me, heads up, watch me. You shouldn't command their attention. You should inspire it. It's a byproduct of the great connection you have by playing these games. Train the dog in front of you. I've been telling you all along that our dogs need to feel safe. They learn best when they feel safe. And when they feel safe, we work on them feeling good and growing confidence. It's exactly the same with you. You need to feel safe. I don't want you feeling guilt or shame or regrets because we're starting today. Today is day one. So just anything that you have been applying in a wrong way, anything that you've been taught that you now realize, I shouldn't have done that to my dog. Come on, you come with me. You're just wiping that off. We are a certain vibe in this community. We believe in kindness. We believe in the belief that dogs are doing the best they can. Even people in pain, even people that are in so much pain or they're so stuck, the voices in your head will keep you there rather than you having to change. Because change doesn't feel as safe as pain. Believe the dog. Always believe the dog. You are teaching your dog. Your dog is teaching you. Your dog's responses is giving you feedback on the effectiveness of what you've done. I was on this executive coaching program. I'm a lifelong learner. I love to improve everything that I can. Everything is, is improvable. So I wanted

to become a better team leader for my team. And one of the exercises they wanted you to do was to keep a journal for a week and every day, write in the journal, all the ways you were a horrible leader. This is what I did. This is why I was a horrible leader. This is what I did. This has made me a horrible leader. This is a bad mistake. I made this a bad mistake for a week. And I paid a lot of money for this. When I got the assignment, this was the like week two of a five week program. I said to them respectfully, my life is spent in reinforcement. And I would never, I recognize the importance of mindset. Mindset is more important than anything. So I will never rehearse for my subconscious that I'm a bad person or I'm a bad leader or I'm bad at anything. And, and I said, here's what I've done for my students when we're trying to zero in on a, on a program. So this could be helpful to you. If you're trying to zero in on a challenge, what you're going to do is write down all the things that your dog did brilliantly that day, that you saw them, that you were able to catch them and reinforce them at. What are the things that your dog did brilliantly? Because that's a reflection of stuff you've done well. And then the things that you feel you've reacted badly to, you're going to write that under do differently's do differently's, but we're at the end of the day, we're going to add up and celebrate everything we did well. And, and we're going to then create a plan for our do differently's. Do you see how that's different and far less toxic than creating a list of how you sucked and why you were bad and how everything begins with psychological safety. One of the things you learn really early on as a competitor, and I've been a competitor at world championships for decades and decades. And one of the first things you learn in the mental game of sport is you need to release thinking you're in control of anything other than your own thoughts and actions. So what another competitor does, what somebody says about you, how the announcer mispronounced your, your, your name is none of your business. Your responses are all that you can control. And so if you're stressing, are you thinking about yesterday or last week or last year or the what ifs, or are you thinking about the future about, um, is everything going to work out? Oh, what kind of dog is she going to grow up to be? Oh, is she going to go after another dog? Oh. So if you eliminate those two stressors, why do I save eliminate them? Because they are outside of your control.

Yesterday, as Zig Ziglar used to say, yesterday ended last night. There is nothing we can do to change the history of what's happened. And at the end of the day, remember our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them in the environment that we put them in. So we need to change the education or the environment in order to help them be the best for us.
