Everything I'm telling you are things that I take to every single puppy class that I attend with my puppies. And yes, I have an amazing training facility here, but I still go off-site to puppy class because it's just so good for socializing your puppies to get them to different locations. So, you know, going to more than one puppy class isn't a bad idea. Hey, the kiddo's going to school for the first time. How exciting, right? You know I'm at the four-legged one. Puppy class is such an exciting time. And if you'd like to prep like a world champion, you're in luck. Because today I'm going to go over absolutely everything that I bring to puppy class when I go with my puppy. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett, and I'm applying my more than 30 years of award-winning dog training to create videos so that you can bring out the absolute best in your dog. So, you're going to puppy class. I'm going to tell you not only all the things that you should bring, but I've got five pro tips that I'm going to share with you throughout this video. Let's start packing a bag. Now, you can use any old gym bag that I know you haven't used for years. So, dust it off and bring it out, and let's use it for your puppy. First thing you want to pack is your dog's vaccination certificate. Because a lot of classes will insist on seeing that your dog has been fully vaccinated before they'll allow you in the class. Of course, we need a collar on your dog. Now, I'm going to suggest you pack three different items that could work as your collar. First up, your simple, flat, clip-on collar. Nothing fancy, nothing dangling. Next up, a head halter. If you're like me, you put a lot of work into conditioning your dog to wear a head halter so they love their head halter. You might want to put a harness in your bag because this is something that if your dog doesn't walk nicely on leash, you can just put them on a harness if they're not conditioned to their head halter yet. So, three different ways to control your dog, but of course, they all have to be attached to something. That's where your leash comes in. A very plain six-foot leash is all that you need. I also like to have a braided fleece one because it gives my puppy something to tug on if I don't have a tug handy. Of course, if we're going to puppy class, we need training rewards for your dog. Enter the bait bag. This is one that I just recently started using. I have so many different bait bags that I try out. I'm loving this one, though. You've got your bait bag. You need treats.

강아지 훈련 수업에 가져갈 간식은 미리 다 잘라두세요. 강아지를 훈련해야 할 시간에 간식을 부수고 있으면 안 되니까요. 저는 최소 세 가지 종류의 간식을 준비하는 걸 좋아하고, 이상적으로는 다섯 가지 종류를 준비합니다. 그중 하나는 아주 가치가 낮은, 평범한 간식이어야 합니다. 건조하고 바삭한 간식이면 좋겠네요. 하지만 저는 강아지가 다른 방해 요소를 보기 전에 그런 간식을 사용하는 걸 좋아합니다. 그리고 직접 구운 참치 브라우니 같은 것들도 챙깁니다. 아, 거짓말이에요. 제 직원들이 대신 굽지만, 예전에는 제가 직접 구웠던 적도 있었거든요. 저는 반려견을 위해 직접 만든 참치 브라우니나 다른 수제 간식을 주는 것을 좋아합니다. 제가 또 하는 방법은 아주 큰 로스트 비프를 사서 인스턴트팟이나 냄비에 삶은 뒤, 작은 개별 포장 단위로 잘라두는 것입니다. 이것들을 이런 작은 밀폐 용기에 담아서 냉동실에 넣어두고, 한 주 동안 사용할 것을 하나씩 꺼내 씁니다. 로스트 비프는 제가 말하는 이른바 비상시에 꺼내 쓰는 '만능 간식' 같은 겁니다. 지금 상황이 아주 진지해졌을 때 쓰는 거죠. 강아지의 주의를 집중시켜야 할 때가 필요하거든요. 저는 가장 가치 높은 보상을 선택할 겁니다. 세 번째로 넣을 간식은 아주 건강한 시판 간식입니다. 저는 닥터 마티스(Dr. Marty's) 같은 제품을 좋아하는데, 기본적으로는 동결 건조한 생식이에요. 크기가 작고 쫄깃합니다. 저는 이 간식을 정말 좋아하는데, 원래 이 크기로 나오기도 하고 아주 쉽게 잘라 쓸 수 있기 때문이죠. 시판 간식을 살 때는 충전제나 인공 첨가물이 전혀 들어가지 않은 것을 선택합니다. 강아지에게 100% 건강하고 좋은 성분으로만 된 것이죠. 저희 간식 가방에는 그런 것들이 들어 있습니다. 하지만 지금 당장은 이 간식 가방을 훈련 가방 안에 넣지 않으셨으면 합니다. 간식 가방은 따로 보관할 거니까요. 그건 나중에 더 자세히 말씀드릴게요. 드라마틱한 음악 좀 깔아주시고요. 다음으로, 장난감이 몇 개 필요합니다. 이건 긴 줄다리기 장난감이에요. 바닥에 끌고 다니면 어떻게 될까요? 어떤 강아지든 뒤따라 뛰어올 겁니다. 그리고 저는 짧은 줄다리기 장난감도 좋아합니다. 이 정도 크기가 좋은 이유는 강아지가 물기 좋은 말랑한 공이 달려 있기 때문이에요. 그런데 진짜로, 녀석들은 항상 손잡이 부분을 물고 늘어지길 좋아하더군요. 왜인지는 모르겠어요. 강아지 훈련 교실에 가져오지 말아야 할 것들도 몇 가지 있습니다. 이런 작은 삑삑이 장난감 같은 것 말이죠. 딱히 삑삑 소리가 나는 건 아니지만 작고 통통 튀어 다닙니다. 훈련장에 있는 다른 모든 강아지들의 관심을 끌게 될 겁니다. 그러면 강사님들이 당신을 크리스마스 불량 명단에 올려버릴지도 몰라요. 절 믿으세요. 이런 것도 마찬가지고요. 다른 강아지들의 주의를 분산시킬 수 있거든요. 그러니 그런 것들은 집에 두세요. 전 항상 접이식 물그릇과 물을 담을 보온병을 챙기는 걸 좋아해요.
Make sure you pre-cut all of the treats you're taking to puppy training class so that you aren't breaking treats when you should be training the puppy. I like to have a minimum of three different types of treats and ideally five different types of treats. One will be really low-value, boring treats. Something that is dry and crunchy, maybe. But I like those to use before my puppy sees other distractions. And then I've got things like I like to bake my own tuna brownies. Okay, I'm lying. I have people who work for me that do the baking, but there was a time I baked them for myself. I like homemade tuna brownies for my dog or some sort of homemade treat. Another thing that I do is I buy a great big roast beef and I put it in the Instapot or in a pot on the stove to cook before I cut them up into small individual packages. I'll put them in little Tupperwares like this and I'll throw them in the freezer, taking one out that I can use during the week. Roast beef is what I call the emergency break glass now kind of treat. This is, stuff's getting real right now. I need to get my puppy's attention. I'm going to the top of the value heap. The third treat that I would put in is a very healthy store-bought treat. So I like something like a Dr. Marty's is a treat that is just basically dehydrated raw food. It's small, it's chewy. I love using this because that's the size that it comes in and it breaks up super easily. If I buy a store-bought treat, it's going to be something that is got no fillers, no artificial, anything in there. It's just 100% wholesome, good stuff for my dog. That's what's in our treat bag. But I would like you to not put this treat bag anywhere inside your training bag for now because the treat bag is going to be kept separate. More on that later. Cue the dramatic music. Next up, we need a couple of toys. So this is a long tug toy. You can drag it on the ground and guess what? Any dog's going to run after it. And then I like a short tuggy. One this size is great because it's got a squishy ball that a dog can grab onto. But true story, they always like to hang out to the handle. Don't know why. A couple of things you should not bring to puppy class. Something like this, a little squeaky. It's not really squeaky, but it's small and it bounces around. You're going to get the attention of every other puppy in the classroom. And the instructors are going to put you on the naughty list for Christmas. Trust me. Also something like this. Like it's going to distract the other puppy. So keep those at home. So I always like to have a collapsible water bowl and a thermos for water.

강아지에게 주려고 물을 담아오지만, 사실 강아지보다 제가 더 많이 마신답니다. 그게 가장 기본적인 필수품들이죠. 이제 강아지 훈련 수업의 고수 단계로 넘어가 볼게요. 이건 최고 수준이라 할 수 있죠. 제가 챙겨 다니는 물건들은 이렇습니다. 첫 번째는 삼각대인데, 아이폰을 고정할 수 있는 장치가 있어서 제 훈련 모습을 촬영해요. 훈련사가 하는 단체 강의는 촬영하지 않을 거예요. 많은 훈련사분이 원치 않으시거든요. 하지만 이건 정말 좋은 방법이에요. 가볍고 휴대하기 편한 작은 삼각대요. 두 번째는 간이 침대(cot)가 필요하실 거예요. 캠핑용을 말하는 게 아니에요. 저희는 이걸 반려견의 '핫 존'이라고 부릅니다. 높이가 있는 강아지 침대예요. 이런 것 말이죠. 프레임을 당기면 돼요. 아주 간단하죠. 쉽고요. 그냥 펼치기만 하면 돼요. 짜잔! 자. 이것보다 더 크게 펼쳐져야 해요. 이건 좀 큰 편이죠. 꼭 이렇게 큰 걸 사실 필요는 없어요. 전 항상 좀 과하게 챙기는 편이라서요. 프레임을 당기세요. 다음 고수 아이템은 토플이에요. 무언가를 채울 수 있는 장난감이나 비닐봉지에 넣어 다닐 고기 뼈 간식 같은 거죠. 매번 강아지 훈련 수업이 끝나면 추가 교육을 해주시거든요. 그때 우리 강아지에게 뼈 간식이나 토플을 줍니다. 이제 제가 강사의 말을 듣는 동안 강아지는 핫 존에서 그것을 씹으며 시간을 보낼 수 있습니다. 닌자 비결이죠. 마지막으로, 훈련 일지입니다. 이건 맞춤 제작한 것이지만, 저는 항상 강아지와 무엇을 했는지 기록하는 일지를 가지고 다닙니다. 잘 된 점은 무엇인가? 잘 안 된 점은 무엇인가? 다음 계획은 무엇인가? 다음 훈련을 위한 내 계획은 이것입니다. 붐 차카라카! 성공 확률이 그야말로 하늘을 찌를 듯이 높아졌을 겁니다. 자, 좋습니다. 이제 전문가 팁으로 넘어가 보죠. 전문가 팁 첫 번째. 강아지 훈련 수업이 시작되기 최소 15분 전에는 도착하세요. 강아지를 이동장에서 꺼내 잔디밭에서 배변하게 하고, 주변 냄새를 맡게 하며 다리를 좀 펴게 해주는 것이 좋습니다. 새로운 장소에서 5분 정도 시간을 보내게 하세요. 그런 다음 다시 이동장에 넣어둘 겁니다. 전문가 팁 두 번째. 코트(침대)와 훈련 가방을 챙기세요. 간식 주머니와 리드줄, 그리고 강아지를 제외한 모든 것을요. 강아지는 차 안의 이동장에 머물게 합니다. 나머지 짐을 가지고 들어가서 자리를 잡으세요. 전문가 팁 세 번째. 어디에 자리를 잡아야 할까요? 저의 경우, 어린 강아지라면 문과 아주 가까운 곳에 자리를 잡고 싶어 합니다. 그래야 강아지가 실수를 할 것 같을 때 빨리 밖으로 데리고 나가 배변을 시킬 수 있으니까요. 하지만 강아지가 너무 산만하다면 문에서 최대한 멀리 떨어진 곳에 자리를 잡으려 합니다. 먼 구석 쪽으로 강아지를 데려가기 위해서죠. 새로운 강아지들이 문을 통해 들어올 때, 제 강아지가 '세상에, 새로운 친구가 왔어!'라고 생각할 수 있기 때문입니다.
Now I'll put water in here for the dog, but truth be told, I drink more than the dog does. Those are the bare essentials. Now we're going to the ninja lair of puppy class student. This is like top level. And here's what I bring. Number one is a tripod with a little apparati so that I can put my iPhone in here and I video my training. What I'm not going to video is group lectures from the trainer because a lot of trainers don't want you to do that. But this is a great thing to do. A little tripod that's lighter weight and easier to bring around. Number two, you will want a cot. I'm not talking camping. We call them your dog's hot zone. It's a raised dog bed. Something like this. Pull on the crane. So it's simple. It's easy. It just pops open. Boom chakalaka. Okay. It's got to open bigger than that. But this is a big one. You don't have to get one quite this big. I often overdo it though. Pull on the crane. Next ninja layer is a topple. Some something that you can stuff or a meaty bone that I'll keep in a plastic bag. At the end of every puppy class, they'll give you some extra training. That's when I will give my puppy their bone or their topple. And now they can chew on that on their hot zone while I'm listening to what the instructor has to say. Ninja secret. Finally, your training journal. Now this one is a custom built one, but I always have a journal where I write down what I'm doing with my dog. What went well? What didn't went well? What's my next plan? My next training plan for next time up. Boom chakalaka. Your chances of success have just gone through the ceiling. All right. Let's get to those pro tips. Pro tip number one. Arrive at puppy class at least 15 minutes before the class starts. You want to get your puppy out of the crate, let them have a potty on the grass, maybe sniff around, stretch their legs. This is going to be a new place for five minutes. And then I will put them back in their crate. Pro tip number two. Grab your cot and your training bag. Everything except your bait pouch and your leash and your puppy. Puppy stays in a crate in the car. And you take the rest of it and you go inside to set up. Pro tip number three. Where do you set up? Now, for me, if I've got a young puppy, I'll want to be really close to a door so that I can get the puppy out and have a potty break if it looks like they're about to have an accident. But if I have a puppy that's really distracted, I want to be as far away from the door as I can because I'm going to get my puppy in the faraway corner. And as the new puppies come in through the door, my puppy might be going, oh my gosh, it's a new friend.

I haven't met that new friend. But they're going to be so far away, it'll be easy for me to get their attention back on, get off the hot zone, get back on the hot zone. That's why you want to get there early because then you have an option of where you set up. The final ninja tip. When you get there early, play a little bit of hot zone where you get your dog up on the cot and give them a low value treat. Ideally, there's nobody else in the class, right? The other puppies haven't arrived yet and you can give your puppy low value treats. They're getting reinforcement. They're engaging with you and then you have them settle. And when the other puppies start coming through the door, you're now going to be ready to be proactive and engage your dog. Maybe do a little tug, get them back up. Your first puppy class might feel like a bit of a hot mess. That doesn't mean you're a failure. That just means you're normal. You've got a young puppy who's interested in everything and they're not old enough to really understand how to control all that excitement. That's okay. Stick with it. It will get better, especially if you follow this plan to have the most successful puppy class ever.
