Okay. In a second, I'm going to play a video, a reel that Victoria Stillwell recently made, and I will critique it. However, I don't want to do your classic she says something, I interrupt, and I give my take, and, you know, cut and go. I would rather you watch the whole video that she has, and afterwards, I will give my critique, okay? So, let's watch Victoria Stillwell. >> Do you ever say no to your dog or dogs that you work with? Using the word no with dogs is becoming very controversial, and here is why. Let's start with the reasons why people say you should use no. It's great feedback, the dog understands you, it's not aversive, it's very effective, and we have to create boundaries for our dogs. We can't just let them do whatever they want. We have to tell them what they can do and what they can't do. On the other side, people say you shouldn't use it because you use it so much that the word actually loses its meaning. Now, I do understand both arguments, but here's where I land. If you constantly say no, no, no, no to your dog, of course the word loses value. If you scream the word no, then of course your dog can be frightened. Using the word no effectively is all about how you use it and when you use it. When I say no to dogs, I will say no, ma'am or no, sir. It's the tone, it's the way I say it, but when I say that, it gives good feedback, it stops the dog from doing particular behavior that I don't want the dog to do without frightening or intimidating the dog. And at the end of the day, your tone and the way you deliver a certain word or instruction is what it's all about. So, yes, boundaries are important. You have to give dogs feedback on what they can and what they can't do. And doing it in a way that doesn't cause them fear or intimidate them, you can use any kind of word you want as long as the way you deliver it is effective. And I should also say consistent, but don't overuse words cuz when you overuse them, they lose their meaning. If you want more information, go to the world's number one resource for dog training and behavior, positively.com. And if you want to become a trainer, come learn with us at the Victoria Stilwell Academy. >> Now, let's go beyond the word salad. She's correct about some things. Repeating no no no no constantly definitely will reduce its effectiveness. Also, feedback, um tone, consistency, all this matters. There is nobody questions that. The problem really starts when Victoria tries to explain why no works. Here is what she says. When I say no, it stops the dog from doing behavior without frightening or intimidating the dog. She never really explains why. Behavior doesn't stop because of

English. No dog is responding to the semantic meaning of the word no. They're responding because that sound has acquired behavioral significance through learning. My question, which he typically avoids, is what function does the word no actually have? So, Victoria says it stops the dog from doing behavior. Well, Victoria, this is literally the definition of punishment. Punishment is defined by its effects on behavior, not by whether it looks harsh or whether the dog appears frightened. If no decreases the probability of the preceding behavior occurring again, then behaviorally it's functioning as a punisher or or as a part of a punishment contingency. Whether it's loud or quiet, that's really secondary. It becomes even more confusing. Victor- Victoria wants the word no to interrupt behavior, establish boundaries, stop unwanted behavior, while simultaneously distancing herself from punishment. >> [clears throat] >> You can't have both. Even if you are Victoria Stillwell, that's not how things work. If no truly changes behavior whereby decreasing it, then that's the behavioral process involved. Calling it feedback doesn't change the learning process at all. Anyway, then then she goes on to say "It's all about the tone." Really? I haven't heard more misleading advice anyone can give. If a tone alone mattered, then every owner or or uh guardian, as she likes to call them, saying no with the same tone would get exactly the same results, no? But, they don't. So, why why is that? I'll tell you why. Because the word acquires meaning through learning. Or I can call it conditioning to sound more sophisticated, right? When a puppy hears no for the first time, it doesn't magically stop because of your uh voice inflection. The word no, or or whatever sound you choose to, must become predictive of consequences. Full stop. It is the history and not the tone that attaches the power. Sure, we can agree that uh tone may influence salience or emotional impact, but it doesn't explain why the cue really works. Let's move on. Um next next she goes further by saying, "Don't overuse it."

Once again, this is partially true, but it's definitely incomplete. A cue loses effectiveness when it no longer reliably predicts consequences. That's what we would call extinction. Imagine if every no is ignored with no consequences, then yes, its effectiveness goes out the door. I will go further with this. That's true of every cue. Let's imagine saying sit and nothing happens. Sit and nothing happens. Sit and nothing happens. Regardless if you're using biscuits or leash pops, eventually the word sit loses reliability. So, this isn't unique to saying no. It's It's basic learning theory. Now, let's address the the elephant here. Do any of you wonder what happens if the dog ignores the word no? Are we going to blame the owner for not using the proper voice inflection? Is how it is said going to change the outcome? Of course not. Of course not. And that's the entire issue. If there is never any consequence, then the word no eventually becomes background noise. But if there is a consequence, then the consequence and not the syllables and all is what maintains the behavior. This is simple kindergarten learning theory. However, coming from Victoria Stillwell, I'm not surprised that she skips this all together. Then of course, she brings the the scarecrow's slogans. Use it in a way that doesn't frighten or intimidate. To be clear, I'm not arguing that screaming at your dog is the way to go. The real problem isn't whether you're yelling yelling or not. It's understanding how inhibitory control develops. And this you will not learn if you sign up for Victoria Stillwell Academy. Why? Because it goes against the narrative of the ideology. That's the simplest answer I can give you. Replacing a discussion of learning mechanisms with a discussion of emotions is not helping anyone. Those are very different topics. I am not making this up. This is in all of the heavy big expensive books anybody that has gone to study animal learning or learning period cannot argue with. So, that's all for now.
