지난 30년 동안 이 단계까지 오면서 전자 칼라가 있었으면 좋았을 텐데라고 생각한 적은 단 한 번도 없습니다. 가끔은 전자 칼라를 사용하는 게 더 친절한 방법이 아니었을까 하는 생각이 들 때도 있습니다. 아이반, 왜 그런지 아세요? 예를 들어 테이터 샐러드의 경우, 제가 전자 칼라를 사용하는 사람이었다면 이 사유지에서 더 많은 자유를 누릴 수 있었을 텐데 그러지 못했거든요. 그래서 녀석은 또 다른 희생양인 셈이죠. 전자 칼라를 사용했다면 처벌을 원치 않는 구조견들 때문에 힘들어하는 다른 사람들에게 공유할 수 있는 그 모든 보상의 단계들을 배우지 못했을 겁니다. 그래서 안타깝게도 테이터는 충분한 자유를 얻지 못하는 고통을 겪어야 했습니다. 물론, 녀석은 절대 목줄을 하지 않습니다. 하지만 그 덕분에 저는 새로운 놀이들을 배웠죠. 저는 새로운 방법들을 터득했습니다. 만약 전자 칼라가 제 도구 중 하나였다면, 저는 그 모든 것을 배우지 못했을 겁니다. 그래서 덕분에 저는 계속해서 성장하고 발전하며 비슷한 상황에 처한 다른 개들과 사람들을 도울 수 있게 된 것입니다.
To this stage in the last 30 years, there's nothing that I've said, oh, man, I wish I had an e-collar. And I think sometimes it would be kinder if I did use an e-collar. You know why, Ivan? Like Tater Salad, for example, he didn't get the freedom he would have got on this property if I was somebody who used an e-collar. So he's another sacrificial lamb. By going to an e-collar, I wouldn't have learned all those layers of reinforcement that I can now share with other people struggling with rescue dogs that don't want to use punishment. So unfortunately, Tater had to suffer not getting as much freedom. Now, I mean, he's never on leash. But because of that, I learned new games. I learned new ways. If an e-collar was one of my tools, I wouldn't have learned all of that. So it allows me to continue to grow and evolve so I can help other dogs and other people in similar situations.
